BORREGO SPRINGS, Calif. (KGTV) - California State Parks are preparing for wildflower blooms across the state. The unpredictable and rare occurrences attract thousands of people to the parks. Some of the most beautiful blooms take place in desert landscapes. These rare blooms occur when precipitation levels in the areas are high, combined with years-long drought that eliminate grasses and weeds that take up nutrients. These conditions cause wildflowers to thrive. Vibrant wildflowers can already be seen sprouting from the typically barren brown soil in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.“This area is just a mosaic of a painter’s colors," said Danny McCamish, Senior Environmental Scientist for the Colorado Desert District and Anza-Borrego State Park.RELATED: Photos: Gorgeous spring bloom carpets Anza Borrego desert"The early October, November rains started that germination process early this year, and so as the December, January, and February rains came in, all of the area was ripe to go off like this."Cooler temperatures are also a factor in prolonging the bloom, which the region has been experiencing thanks to snow in the mountains. McCamish says during the 2017 'super bloom' word of the beauty spread fast on social media, drawing in 6,000 to 7,000 cars a day.He says the rush of visitors overwhelmed the small town of Borrego Springs but that this year they're more prepared. Restaurants are planning to offer to-go meals and rangers will set up pop-up visitor centers to spread out where visitors go.McCamish recommends people check out other parts of the 700,000-acre region, including Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area.And if you plan to spend the night figure out lodging ahead of time, whether that be a hotel or camping.In addition to the flowers, visitors can enjoy nature on a bike. Bike Borrego offers tours on electric bikes, as well as bicycles for more advanced riders. Bringing calm to what could be a chaotic kitchen, Jacqueline Bonanno has years of experiencing leading women and men.“I think that a diverse workforce is the best thing you can have,” said Scott Henley, director of operations for Bonanno Concepts.Bonanno owns four restaurants across Colorado and is considered an inspiration for the next generation of aspiring women business owners.“I love it,” said a cook at Green Russell, a cocktail joint and restaurant. “I got a daughter, and I will be proud of her one day when she opens her own restaurant.”A new study shows more women are becoming business owners across the country.“For the last several years we’ve recognized the importance of the impact of women entrepreneurs,” said Allen Gutierrez with the U.S. Small Business Administration.He says between 2014 and 2019, the number of women-owned businesses increased 21% to almost 13 million nationwide.Gutierrez added the reasons in growth range from more opportunities to more women making a side hustle a legit business. Whatever the reasons, he projects even more women to become business owners“Certainly, it makes an impact in terms of the domino effect in their community,” Gutierrez said. “Then you see those increase and become even stronger and be an employer based in that aspect.”As more women own their own businesses, Bonanno reflects on balancing making a profit and parenthood.“There were times when I was nursing in the basement and lectured by a manager that that was inappropriate,” she said.The ability to overcome obstacles has others looking to Bonanno as a source of inspiration“It shows you that I can do it, too,” said Alexis Broswell, a line cook at Green Russell. “You just have to have the confidence.”While flattered by the compliment, Bannono is now focusing on nurturing her employees to go out and open their own businesses.“When I see what young women are doing right now, I think it’s breathtaking,” she said.Despite having big dreams, Bannono says when starting a business, that it's best to start small and grow from there.“Try to stay away from investors if you can,” she said. “There’s nothing but opportunity and it’s just going to get better and better.” 2203

Black Friday has already been changing over the last few years with online shopping getting more popular and people getting tired of fighting the crowds, but stores are now further reinventing the shopping holiday because of the pandemic.Home Depot came out this week saying for the first time that it's offering Black Friday deals starting in early November that will last through December, in-store and online.Best Buy, Target and Amazon are some of the other companies saying they'll be offering holiday deals earlier than before. Target is saying you can get deals starting in October and Amazon will reportedly start offering deals then too.“This is where consumers have to be smart and consumers have to themselves do the research and go, ‘is this really a deal or is this what they were running last week and this week they're saying it's a Black Friday sale?’” said Jane Boyd Thomas, a marketing professor at Winthrop University.Boyd Thomas has been researching Black Friday for years. (AP) — Authorities say a malfunctioning diesel vehicle sparked the first big Southern California wildfire of the year, which has forced thousands of people from their homes east of Los Angeles. State fire officials say the vehicle's exhaust system spewed burning carbon Friday in Cherry Valley in Riverside County, although it hasn't been found. The blaze is raging for a fourth day and has burned one home. It's one of several burning around the state amid sweltering temperatures.
