Miss USA has apologized after comments she made about two fellow Miss Universe contestants' English-language abilities sparked backlash online. In a live Instagram video posted on Wednesday, 24-year-old contestant Sarah Rose Summers said that Miss Vietnam H'Hen Nie is "so cute and she pretends to know so much English and then you ask her a question after having a whole conversation with her and she (nods and smiles)."Summers, who was joined in the video by Miss Colombia, Valeria Morales and Miss Australia, Francesca Hung, was attending the Miss Universe pageant in Thailand, which is scheduled to begin on Sunday in Bangkok.Later on in the video Summers appeared to express sympathy for Miss Cambodia, Rern Sinat, who she said, "doesn't speak any English and not a single other person speaks her language.""Can you imagine? Francesca (Miss Australia) said that would be so isolating and I said yes and just confusing all the time," Summers said. "Poor Cambodia."The comments have sparked criticism online, with some calling Summers' words "xenophobic" and "condescending."Responding to the backlash in an Instagram post on Friday, Summers said that Miss Universe was "an opportunity for women from around the world to learn about each other's cultures, life experiences, and views.""In a moment where I intended to admire the courage of a few of my sisters, I said something that I now realize can be perceived as not respectful, and I apologize," Summers said, alongside a photo of her embracing her fellow contestants."My life, friendships, and career revolve around me being a compassionate and empathetic woman. I would never intend to hurt another," she added. "I am grateful for opportunities to speak with Nat, Miss Cambodia, and H'Hen, Miss Vietnam, directly about this experience. These are the moments that matter most to me."Speaking to CNN on Friday, Miss Vietnam H'Hen Nie said Summers "didn't mean anything" by it."Everyone in this competition, myself included, loves and respects one another," she said, adding that Summers had been particularly supportive and helpful to her."When she knew about my difficulties with (the English) language, she took an interest and showed me love. That's why she knows about that. Thank you Miss USA for taking care of me, showing me love and helping me recently," H'Hen Nie said.In another sign that all was well between the contestants, Miss Cambodia posted the same Instagram photo as Summers with the caption, "I speak the language of love, respect and understanding.""My friendship and sisterhood in Miss Universe will forever be kept in my heart," she said. "Our experience have given us the opportunity to show and learn different cultures." 2711

Nearly 2 million Americans have received the coronavirus vaccine.According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's COVID data tracker, as of 9 a.m. Saturday, 9.5 million doses of vaccines have been distributed, and 1.9 million have been administered. The CDC says both totals include Moderna and Pfizer vaccines.CDC officials say the number of people who have received their first vaccine dose is likely higher, although the number of amounts distributed is higher than the number of those who've received a vaccine. The CDC says the lag in data being reported is because of several factors: health agencies having to transmit data to CDC, healthcare providers having to report to health agencies up to 72 hours after administering the vaccines, and the launch of the federal Pharmacy Partnership for Long-Term Care Program is still pending. The CDC COVID data tracker also stated that as of 2 p.m. Sunday, 179,104 new coronavirus cases had been reported, bringing the new overall total to 18,909,910. Data also showed that 1,309 recent deaths were reported, bringing the total of those who've died to 330,901. 1132

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. (AP) — Two people were bitten by a coyote in two separate attacks on a Southern California trail on Saturday. A spokeswoman for the city of Mission Viejo in Orange County says a woman was jogging on the Jeronimo Open Space when a coyote bit her lower left calf, leaving four puncture wounds. The city shut the trail pending an investigation by animal control officers and California Department of Fish and Wildlife.RELATED COVERAGE:Video: Coyote attacks pit bull at Chula Vista parkTrapping plan underway for aggressive coyotes near Chula Vista park, baseball fieldColumbus Zoo visitors spot missing red panda that hadn't been seen for two daysIt's not a Disney film: Coyote, badger travel under California highway together 896

NASHVILLE, Mich. - A family with a passion with aviation decided to take their hobby on the road.Gino Lucci of Nashville, Mich. is a pilot, mechanic, and federal inspector of aviation. His passion prompted an idea when he was a kid."I always wanted to do one, since I was 12-years-old, and I just wanted to make an airplane out of a motor home," said Lucci. "The truck won't fly, but the airplane drives."Lucci named the RV The Fabulous Flamingo. To make his plans a reality, Lucci's son Giacinto tracked down a plane in Missouri. It had been deemed inoperable due to a tornado that rolled through the area. The plane was built in 1943 and used in South America by the Navy during the World War II era."It took us about four to six weeks to really sit down and say, 'Alright, I’ll sell it to you," Giacinto recalled. The family gutted the airplane but tried to keep as much of the original interior as possible. Some of the parts they removed were sent to France to restore a similar plane for a D-Day memorial. The RV is classified as a Class A motor home and is up to safety standards. Local parts were also provided by Frontier Truck Parts in Dorr. This story was first reported by Angeline McCall at WXMI in Grand Rapids, Michigan. 1239

More than four and a half million children live in a home with an unlocked, loaded gun. Three out of 4 of those kids know where the firearms are kept in their house. The “End Family Fire” campaign released this week highlights the importance of safe gun storage in a home in order to keep children safe.Every day, 8 children and teens--ages 19 and under--are unintentionally shot by weapons that are found in the home.Hector Adames' nephew, Joshua, was one of them.“Joshua was shot in the stomach; [it] went through his stomach,” says Adames. “And unfortunately, when Joshua went down, he never got back up.”Kyleanne Hunter, with the Brady Center to Combat Gun Violence says it’s a tragedy that could be prevented by properly storing weapons. The nonprofit organization is the group behind the “End Family Fire” campaign. Hunter says they don’t want to confiscate guns, but instead encourage parents to keep guns locked up, keep ammo separate and let family and visitors know there are firearms in the home and locked away. It's advice Adames hopes parents will take.“We just want to try to prevent any family from having the same kind of pain that this has put my family through. 1185
