BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) on Sunday stressed it would assure that there is a stable supply of farm produce amid ongoing icy weather as the nation's most important traditional festival approaches.The ministry urged local authorities, in a notice on its website, to make every effort to ensure continued agriculture production as the freezing weather threatens abundant supplies, which are critical during the Spring Festival, the annual season for family reunions.Temperatures and humidity in vegetable greenhouses and corrals should be kept at proper levels, while exposure to frigid weather by poultry and livestock should be minimized.The ministry also asked local departments to facilitate the smooth transporting to markets of fresh farm produce.Freezing weather in south China has forced the evacuation of at least 58,000 people from their homes over the past week, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.Southern China will experience more icy rain and snow from Sunday to Thursday, where freezing weather has hit since the New Year's Day, the National Meteorological Center reported Sunday.

CHENGDU, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-eight miners were trapped in a colliery flood in southwest China's Sichuan Province on Sunday, the local safety watchdog said.The accident happened at 11 a.m. in Weiyuan County of Neijiang City.Altogether 41 miners were working underground when a pit of Batian Coal Mine was flooded. Thirteen of them escaped, said Lin Shucheng, chief of the provincial work safety bureau.He said rescuers had begun pumping flood water from the pit early in the afternoon. CHENGDU, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- A spreading grassland fire in a mountainous Tibetan region in southwest China proved deadly when it trapped soldiers and local residents trying to put out the blaze. By Sunday night, at least 22 have been killed and three severely burned, local officials said.The wild fire was raging through a grassland atop a plateau some six kilometers from the county government seat in Daofu County, Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze, Sichuan Province. About 500 mu (33.3 hectares) of the grassland has burned, while 200 mu (13 hectares) is still on fire, a source with local fire-fighters told Xinhua."The fire line stretches several kilometers long. As it darkens at night, most fire-fighters have retreated to the camps." Yang Hao, a senior local fire-fighting official told reporters. "However, we are still closely monitoring the situation."Prairie fire is seen in Daofu County in southwest China's Sichuan Province, Dec. 5, 2010. At least 22 people have been killed in the prairie fire.About 2,000 people have joined the fire-fighting efforts. Sichuan Governor Jiang Jufeng led a work-team to Daofu, some 580 kilometers from provincial capital Chengdu, late Sunday night. An emergency medical team is also the en route to Daofu from Chengdu.Local officials said the grassland fire broke out at noon on Sunday and was brought under control at about 3 p.m. However, gusting winds boosted the flames and trapped people fighting the fire.Of the 22 fatalities, 15 were soldiers, two were workers with the grassland administration while five others were local civilians, officials said. VIENNA, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- China remained open to initiatives on the establishment of an international nuclear fuel bank , a senior Chinese diplomat said here Friday. "The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA should play an active role in establishing such mechanism, on the prerequisite of maintaining its independence, " said Hu Xiaodi, China's permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna. "China is of the view that the establishment and operation of multilateral mechanism on assurance of nuclear fuel supply involves complex political, economic, technical and legal factors as well as practical interests of all Member States, " Hu told a board meeting of IAEA. Referring to an U.S. proposal on the establishment of an IAEA low-enrichment uranium bank, Hu noted that some IAEA Member States still had concerns on that proposal. "The concerns of relevant states should be taken into full consideration and resolved in order to seek the most extensive support," Hu said. He also said that while the objective of preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons should be promoted, Member States ' right to peaceful uses of nuclear energy should not be affected.There have been a number of initiatives to establish nuclear fuel reserve banks in recent years.The U.S. proposal envisions a nuclear fuel bank run by IAEA, to which countries could turn to if their regular supplies were cut.However, the plan has met opposition from some developing countries. They worry that a nuclear fuel bank could undermine their right to acquire their own nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. Some countries are also concerned with the possibility of fuel supply being controlled by western powers and used for political purposes.
