WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a historic bill that would federally decriminalize marijuana use.The Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act (MORE Act) was approved by a 228-164 margin on Friday.Specifically, the MORE Act would remove cannabis from the list of scheduled substances under the Controlled Substances Act and eliminate criminal penalties for anyone who manufactures, distributes or possesses pot.The MORE Act, officially called H.R.3884, would also establish a process to expunge convictions and conduct sentencing review hearings related to federal cannabis offenses.The MORE Act would make several other changes as well.Under the bill, statutory references marijuana would be replaced with the word cannabis.The legislation would require the Bureau of Labor Statistics to regularly publish demographic data on cannabis business owners and employees.The bill would establish a trust fund to support various programs and services for individuals and businesses in communities impacted by the war on drugs. A 5% tax on cannabis products would be imposed and require revenues to be deposited into the trust fund.The bill would make Small Business Administration loans and services available to entities that are cannabis-related legitimate businesses or service providers.The MORE Act would prohibit the denial of federal public benefits to a person on the basis of certain cannabis-related conduct or convictions, as well as ban the denial of benefits and protections under immigration laws on the basis of a cannabis-related event.Lastly, it would directs the Government Accountability Office to study the societal impact of cannabis legalization.The passage of the MORE Act marks the first time a full chamber of Congress has even taken up the issue of federally decriminalizing cannabis.Although the House has approved the progressive bill, it will likely face tough opposition in the Senate, which is led by Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Though, if Democrats are able to win the two runoff elections in Georgia, they would take control of the Senate in 2021 and the MORE Act would stand a better chance at becoming law.Federal law still prohibits the use of cannabis, but recreational marijuana is slowly being legalized on the state level in parts of the U.S. A total of 15 states have legalized pot for recreational use, but laws about possession, distribution and concentrates differ. 2479

The letter, laden with racial slurs and derogatory language, demands the family take down their yard signs supporting President-elect Joe Biden and the Black Lives Matter movement.Mia Harlan said when her husband Brian opened a letter from the mail late last week, his reaction told her it wasn't a typical piece of mail."The way he responded, the way he acted, told me something wasn't right," Harlan said.The Harlans have a Black Lives Matter flag and a Biden campaign sign in their yard; the letter the couple received threatens vandalism if the signs aren't taken down.It states, in part, "if you don't take that s*** down in a hurry, we'll be aiming at your house, your cars and you."Racial slurs and expletives in the letter have been censored.Harlan said she was disgusted and angry, and the couple reported the letter to West Chester Police."Stay away from my family," she said. "Stay away from my property...what else would they do? Will they actually come to our home and try to harm us? Or try to harm our children? WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. — U.S. Marshals safely recovered 123 missing children in a one-day operation in Michigan.The U.S. Marshals Service - Detroit Missing Child Recovery Unit, U.S. Marshals Service Sex Offender Investigations Branch, Michigan State Police and law enforcement officers from Wayne County agencies participated in Operation MISafeKid, a missing juvenile sweep to identify and recover missing children from the area with an emphasis on locating victims of sex trafficking.According to the U.S. Marshals, out of 301 files of missing children, 123 were identified and recovered safely, all of which were interviewed about potentially being sexually victimized or used in a sex trafficking ring. Three such cases were discovered.The Detroit Missing Child Recovery Unit was requested to assist on 30 missing child cases two weeks prior to the sweep. WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. health officials have traced a food poisoning outbreak from romaine lettuce to at least one farm in central California.But they cautioned Thursday that other farms are likely involved in the E. coli outbreak and consumers should continue checking the label before purchasing romaine lettuce. Bros.The Food and Drug Administration said 59 people in 15 states have now been sickened by the tainted lettuce. That's seven more cases than previously reported, but regulators said they are fairly confident that the lettuce which first triggered the outbreak has been removed from the market. Farms in Santa Barbara County tested positive for the bacterial strain and the owners are cooperating with U.S. officials. Officials from the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have not determined how the water reservoir — which is used to irrigate lettuce — became contaminated.The bacteria can get into water and soil through multiple routes, including waste from domesticated animals or wild animals, fertilizer and other agricultural products.The FDA's Dr. Stephen Ostroff said investigators have linked the tainted lettuce to multiple distributors and processors, suggesting it must have come from several farms.A man who answered the phone at Adam Bros. Farms said he could not comment on the government announcement. According to the company's website, it only grows vegetables products, including broccoli, cauliflower, celery and various types of lettuce.The government also narrowed the source of the outbreak to three California counties: Santa Barbara, Monterey and San Benito. That's down from six California counties under investigation when regulators began warning the public last month.Regulators said people should only buy lettuce with a label listing where and when it was harvested. Lettuce from outside the three California counties that was harvested after November 23 should be safe to eat.Romaine harvesting recently began shifting from California's Central Coast to winter growing areas, primarily Arizona, Florida, Mexico and California's Imperial Valley.
