SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors said the officer-involved-shooting in the South Crest area of San Diego, all started with a machete attack between acquaintances. It was a frightening scene on Boston Avenue Wednesday afternoon. A man was seen lying on the street, clutching his bloody head. Neighbors said he was beaten over the head with a machete. According to San Diego Police, the first 911 call came in at around 5:15 pm.RELATED: Police investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in Southcrest10News spoke to a man who lives at the home where the attack happened. He said the attacker is his sister's boyfriend. He said the boyfriend came over to the house and got into an argument with a family friend over a dog chain. The boyfriend then grabbed a machete and began striking the victim over the head, then to the rest of his body. First responders soon took the victim to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.After the attack, witnesses said they saw the attacker run westbound on Boston Ave., then north onto 40th street. That is where a San Diego Police officer confronted him. The officer first fired a taser to try to mitigate the situation. However, the department spokesperson said the taser was deemed "ineffective." The officer then shot the attacker at least once. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.Those who know the machete-wielding man said he is usually a nice person. But he had been acting up lately. Neighbors said they saw him swinging around a bat a day before the attack. While they knew he had violent tendencies, no one thought it would escalate to this level.  1631

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police responded Monday after a vehicle crashed into a Chick-fil-A in Mira Mesa.The crash happened on the 10700 block of Camino Ruiz near Mira Mesa Community Park. Authorities say no one was injured.Due to the crash, the inside of the restaurant was closed for the day as a structural engineer inspected the damage. Authorities haven't said what caused the crash.  407

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Wednesday, ABC10 News interviewed San Diego County Superior Court Presiding Judge Lorna Alksne about this week's first criminal jury trial since all jury trials were halted in March.“We summoned 800 jurors and about 250 or so postponed their service like we told them to do if they felt uncomfortable or had a conflict or co-morbidity or something like that and of the remaining jurors we called in, only 41 showed,” she told ABC10 News and added, “The system doesn't work without jurors.” She went on to say, “I can only anecdotally think that people are unsure of public transportation or coming back Downtown to serve.”Wednesday marked the second day of the trial which was for an elder abuse case.Judge Alksne said that the courts have sufficient safety measures in place for jurors. “When they went back into the courtroom, they had these plexiglass barriers in between them if they're more than six feet apart and everyone wore masks and there was hand sanitizer everywhere. It's as safe as going to Costco,” she told ABC10 News.The courts have maintained that the only way to address the backlog of cases is with cooperation from San Diegans who are called for duty. She added, “What I [asked] the jurors yesterday was if you had a loved one who was incarcerated [and] pending trial and nobody showed up to do jury trial, how would they ever get their chance for their day in court?”Judge Alksne said that another trial is scheduled for next week and two are scheduled for the following week. The numbers of summonses will continue to increase. She explained that there's no plan to penalize people who do not appear for jury duty but that could change if turnout continues to be low. 1721

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One man is dead after a car hopped onto a sidewalk and ran over him.A vehicle traveling southbound near 3950 Normal St. in Hillcrest veered off the road and onto the sidewalk at about 11 p.m. Friday. In the process, the vehicle ran over a man sleeping on the sidewalk, killing him.Police said the vehicle continued through some bushes and into a parking lot, where it collided with a parked car. The vehicle fled the area traveling eastbound on University Ave.The vehicle was described as a silver Honda Accord. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police believe a couple found dead in a Torrey Highlands home Saturday night was killed by their son. According to police, the couple was expected in San Francisco earlier in the day, but they never showed up.When police arrived at the home on the 7400 block of Via Rivera in Torrey Highlands just before 10 p.m. Saturday, they saw the body of a person through a window of the home. After entering the house, officers found an Asian man and woman in their 50s dead with trauma to their upper bodies.RELATED: Couple found dead at home in Torrey Highlands after missing trip to San FranciscoPolice say they now believe the couple was murdered by their son, who then reportedly jumped from the Eastgate Mall overpass over I-805 on August 16 at 1:55 a.m. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police say.
