Millions of older Americans are growing old all alone. As Baby Boomers age, and start losing loved ones, loneliness can take its toll.The issue is becoming such a concern some national organizations are stepping in.“This was the one thing I said when I retire, I want to do Meals on Wheels,” says volunteer Donna Reuss.Reuss has been volunteering for the organization Meals on Wheels for six years. She not only brings seniors a free meal, but she’s often the only person they really interact with for weeks at a time.“One of the things that really surprised me when I first started this was how many seniors live alone,” Reuss says.Loneliness can have a big impact on their health. Research shows that lacking social connections can be as harmful to someone’s health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.“It's a much bigger problem I think than people realize,” says Mary Lee Anderson, with Senior Services of Alexandria.Anderson’s nonprofit organization helps deliver food for Meals on Wheels. She’s helping with a new pilot project that lets volunteers delivering meals use a cell phone app to report any changes in behavior or concerns they notice while visiting with a senior.“It lets our volunteers, if they notice a problem, report it right on their phone,” she explains. “That information is sent back to us at the office and we can then contact the individual who is responsible, a family member or their city social worker if they don't have a close family member.”The pilot program is currently being tested in 10 cities across the country, and it’s expected to expand to another 50 cities early next year. 1619

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – This year’s Kentucky Derby will be held with spectators, but “under strict guidelines."Churchill Downs Racetrack made the announcement Thursday after consulting with Gov. Andy Beshear and state public health officials.The Derby is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 5 after being postponed from its original date, Saturday, May 2.Churchill Downs says its plan was developed in conjunction with advice and counsel from the Louisville Metro Health Department and Kentucky’s Healthy at Work guidance.Some of the steps that will be taken to ensure guest and employee safety include:Venue capacity reductions to limit overall crowd density, including general admission, outdoor reserved seating, premium dining and suites. More information on ticketing and seating areas will be released in the coming days and also will be sent directly to ticket holders.Access throughout the facility will be severely limited.Credentials for employees, media and guests will be reduced.Barn area access will be restricted to essential personnel. Guests and parties in the barn area for morning workouts and during race days will be eliminated.Changes in venue operations to limit person-to-person touchpoints.Team member protocols established to protect employees and guests.A revised "Fan Code of Conduct" will also be in place that establishes expectations for guests coming to the Derby:Guests will be consistently and frequently encouraged to wear a mask at all times unless seated in their reserved seat or venue, including when riding on a shuttle, traveling through the venue, going to the restroom, placing an in-person wager, and purchasing food or beverages from a concession stand. Trump was also at Mar-a-Lago at the time of Cohen's visit.Another source said that after the April 2018 FBI raid on Cohen's office and home, people close to the President assured Cohen that Trump would take care of him. And Cohen believed that meant that the President would offer him a pardon if he stayed on message. It is unclear who specifically reached out to Cohen."The President of the United States never indicated anything to Michael, or anyone else, about getting a pardon," said Rudy Giuliani, the President's attorney. "Pardons are off the table, but it's not a limitation on his power in the future to pardon in any case."Cohen's lawyers could not be reached for comment.Following the raid on Cohen's home and office, Cohen's attorneys had a legal defense agreement with Trump and his attorneys. During this time, there was a steady flow of communication between the two sides, according to two sources familiar with the matter.At first, publicly, Trump seemed very supportive of his former attorney. On the day of the raid, Trump said Cohen was "a good man" and that the investigation reached "a whole new level of unfairness." And when Trump appeared on "Fox and Friends" two weeks after the raids and said that Cohen only did a "tiny, tiny little fraction" of his legal work, Cohen knew the game had changed. According to one source, Cohen knew that things had changed and he acted to protect his family -- and himself.It couldn't be learned whether Cohen shared this information with Mueller, though Cohen has spent more than 70 hours providing testimony over the last several months.These developments represent an extraordinary reversal of fortunes for Trump and Cohen, who once boasted he would "take a bullet" to protect his longtime boss. LUTZ, Fla. — A South Carolina man was arrested in Florida after Hillsborough County deputies say he planned to commit a crime he planned for eight months.The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said on Sunday, August 16 at 2:43 a.m., the suspect, Phillip Thomas, 24, entered a home within the Promenade at Lake Park in Lutz.Detectives learned Thomas parked his car at Idle Wild Church earlier that night, walked to the home, cut a hole in the patio screen, and remained there for about three to four hours. He was watching and listening through the windows, officials said.After the homeowner went to bed, Thomas came in through the back sliding door which activated the home alarm. It prompted the homeowner to look out the window and spot Thomas.The homeowner and a guest left the home in a car and called 911.When deputies arrived, Thomas was still inside the home.According to public records, the home is owned by Daria Berenato. She is a WWE wrestler who goes by the name Sonya Deville. “I have spoken to her and I’m glad she’s safe and I’m thankful and grateful that the sheriff's office took care of the situation immediately. Celebrity status aside this is sickening. I am a product of a sexual assault and have zero-tolerance or respect for any human being that would violate a person's privacy and or personal space," said WWE Superstar Titus O'Neil.Deputies discovered he was carrying a knife, plastic zip ties, duct tape, mace, and other items.Through the investigation, detectives discovered Thomas lived in South Carolina and came to Lutz specifically targeting the homeowner."We know the suspect was completely obsessed with the victim and they had been trying to engage in a conversation for several years, but were unsuccessful, and then Sunday night is when they tried to confront the victim," said Natalia Verdina, a public information officer with HCSO.Thomas told deputies he was planning to take the homeowner hostage."Our deputies are unveiling the suspect's disturbing obsession with this homeowner who he had never met, but stalked on social media for years," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "It's frightening to think of all the ways this incident could have played out had the home alarm not gone off and alerted the homeowner of an intruder.
