SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - A grieving dog owner is searching for the owner of the dog who attacked her 8-year-old rescue at a Santee dog park.At Woodglen Vista Park late Monday morning, Heather Moreno, her 3-year-old daughter and her Pomeranian mix had just walked into the fenced-in off-leash area when they were greeted by a dog. Moreno says the black dog was about 70 pounds, possibly a German Shepard mix."Immediately the owner of the big dog approaches me and shouts, 'Don't worry, he's friendly.' The tail was wagging. My daughter petted him. Our dogs were sniffing each other,said Moreno.Moreno says she was glancing between her dog, Trigger, and her daughter. "Next thing I know, my dog is whining, and he has my dog in his mouth ... thrashing around like a dog toy," said Moreno.The attack would last an agonizing 30 seconds."I'm in panic mode. I'm shouting at the dog, shouting at the dog owner," said Moreno.The dog owner eventually pried open his dog's jaws. Moreno rushing Trigger to an emergency animal hospital, where she died from her wounds on the operating table. "I miss her a lot. She was my companion with everything," said Moreno, choking back tears.Amid the grief, Moreno has a warning for other dog owners at dog parks. "Just always be vigilant. Always be cautious. SANTEE, Calif (KGTV) — The "sprayground" was inconveniently closed Tuesday as temperatures were expected to near 100 degrees in Santee Lakes. "I came the day before and it was 57 degrees," says Walter Frank of Santee. "But I don't mind that it's hot. It gets to 90 degrees, I'm great... I'll go run two miles."Not everyone agrees, and many people were out early trying to get their exercise in before it gets hot. A heat advisory is in effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday for the coast and valleys. On top of the heat, dry and gusty winds are expected in the inland and mountain areas of the county, elevating fire danger.It was 96 degrees in Santee Monday, with a high of 98 expected Tuesday and above average temperatures all week. In the morning, it was still cool enough to get a walk around the lake in, or participate in the other popular early morning activity: Fishing. San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz said Friday the death toll from hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico is actually hundreds higher than official government counts."It appears that for whatever reason the death toll is much higher than what has been reported," Yulín Cruz said during an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper on "The Lead."The official death toll stands at 54, according to a November 1 statement from the government of Puerto Rico, but the number of dead may be almost as high as 500, Yulín Cruz said when asked specifically about the death count.Many hurricane victims haven't been included in that number due to their causes of death not being properly recorded or "being cataloged as dying of natural deaths," Yulín Cruz said."When they were, for example, hooked to a respirator, there's no power, the small generator that they had that gives up, and of course, they die of natural causes, but they are related to a lack of electricity," she said.According to a statement released October 28 by the government of Puerto Rico, 911 bodies cremated in the weeks after Hurricane Maria were the result of natural causes. But the average number of cremations in Puerto Rico in the same time frame is about half that, Yulín Cruz said.The secretary of the Department of Public Safety, Héctor M. Pesquera, said the cremations were authorized at the request of family members of the deceased. The cremations following a review of documents including death certificates and medical records showing the cause of death, he said.The statement did not say whether bodies were examined prior to cremation, but noted that none of the 911 cremation authorizations raised suspicion "that would stop the requested process."As for Puerto Ricans who survived the storm, living conditions are still dire, Yulín Cruz said, noting that some people on the island are still without power weeks after the storms hit. 1904

(KGTV) - A pedestrian was hit and killed Saturday morning while on a sidewalk in San Marcos, according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.The woman was walking on the 500 block of E. Mission Road around 11 a.m. when she was hit by a black BMW that jumped the curb. Skid marks show the car first tried to stop on the asphalt, then hit the curb, a teenage girl, a tree then a wall. Witnesses said the driver is a baseball player and senior at Mission Hills High School.7-Eleven employees told 10News, the victim is also a student. They said she was at school Saturday morning for dance team rehearsal and walked over to the 7-11 on Mulberry on her break to buy some snacks. On her walk back to school, they said she was hit and killed.Friends of the young woman gathered at the crash site to pay their respects, lay flowers and light candles Saturday night. The driver was not injured and stayed on scene to cooperate with investigators.The cause of the crash is under investigation.Students say that stretch of Mission Road is known for speeding. While the limit is 45 mph, they say the flow of traffic is often 10 miles above that. 1206

School is back in session at Ohio State University. However, more than 200 students aren't returning to the classroom just yet after they were suspended for violating the school's new coronavirus pandemic policy.Ohio State leaders say 228 students broke campus guidelines about social gatherings since returning to campus.Students began moving back to the Columbus campus on Aug. 19. Upon their return, the university told students they needed to wear masks, practice social distancing and limit their get-togethers to no more than 10 people.There's no word on how long the students' suspensions will last, but school leaders hope it will show others how serious they are about controlling the spread of COVID-19 on campus.Several other large universities across the country have been forced to suspend classes after large outbreaks of the virus on campus. Notre Dame shifted to remote learning after 150 students tested positive for COVID-19 after a week on campus. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill made a similar shift after 130 students tested positive for the virus after a week of classes.Also last, school administrators at Syracuse University admonished a group of students for holding a large gathering on the school's quad, adding that the even may have already derailed plans for in-person learning. 1332
