XIANGNING, Shanxi, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in the flooded Wangjialing coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province rose to 28 after one more body was recovered Saturday afternoon.Rescuers are searching for the 10 miners who remained missing, the rescue headquarters said.About 280,000 cubic meters of water had been pumped out by Saturday, more than two times of the planned volume, said the spokesman Liu Dezheng at a press conference.The water in section two had been all drained up and the search work there had been finished, Liu said.More than 60,000 meters of water had been pumped out in section one, nearly four times than planned, but the water level fell much slower than expected, Liu said.Toxic gas also brought great difficulties to rescue work, he said.A total of 261 miners were working below ground when the mine was flooded on March 28, and 108 miners escaped unharmed while 153 were trapped underground.On Monday, 115 miners were brought out of the mine alive after being trapped for more than a week. They are receiving medical care in five hospitals in Hejin and Taiyuan Cities.

HONG KONG, April 16 (Xinhua) -- A volunteer from Hong Kong who lost his life on Wednesday when rescuing others in the earthquake- hit Qinghai province of China, has been recommended for a gold medal for bravery at home, local authority said on Friday.Wong Fu-wing, a 46-year-old volunteer, escaped from the earthquake on Wednesday morning but returned to rescue the trapped orphans and teachers in the orphanage where he worked in Yushu county of Qinghai province. He was critically injured by falling debris in a powerful aftershock.Tsang Tak-sing, Secretary for Home Affairs Bureau of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government, said on Friday that Wong has been recommended for the Medal for Bravery of Hong Kong.The Medal for Bravery (Gold), created in 1997, is the first rank in the Order of the Medal for Bravery, awarded for acts of gallantry of the greatest possible heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger.Chief Secretary Hengry Tang Ying-yen said Thursday that Wong's selfless sacrifice deserved the highest respect and expressed condolences to his family.Wong's family members departed from Hong Kong to the disaster zone of Qinghai province on Thursday to collect his remains. YUSHU, Qinghai, April 24 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a 7.1-magnitude earthquake in northwest China's Qinghai Province on April 14 has climbed to 2,192, the rescue headquarters said late Friday.As of 5 p.m. Friday, 78 people were still missing, the headquarters said.Qinghai has received more than 722 million yuan (105.7 million U.S. dollars) in donation as of Friday, according to the provincial department of civil affairs.This includes 328 million yuan in cash and 394 million yuan worth of supplies, the department said.It said 1,363 tonnes of food, 87,476 boxes of bottled water, 27,842 tents and 130,876 quilts have been delivered to the quake-hit Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.A television charity show broadcast nationwide by China Central Television Tuesday evening alone raised 2.175 billion yuan (320 million U.S. dollars) to help quake victims of last week's earthquake.
