(KGTV) — Dos Desperados brewing in San Marcos was headed for a banner year until the coronavirus outbreak hit."We had all of our vats full and of course we had to shut down," said owner Steve Munson. "It's not a killer yet, We're trying to survive until the end of the year."Sales plummeted in the tasting room and distribution. Munson had to cut his staff of eight to two, even letting his own daughter go. It got even more complicated in early July, when the governor eliminated indoor service for bars and restaurants.But when Munson approached the City of San Marcos to get an outdoor permit, he says it went lightning-quick, something Munson never expected.San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones says it happened fast because the city already had the framework in place to streamline outdoor permits, with no fees. The city actually approved it in late May. Jones credits Innovate 78, a collaborative effort between the five cities that line the 78: San Marcos, Carlsbad, Oceanside, Escondido, and Vista. They've been working together on the economy for years."If you are not looking forward to what could happen next, you're not really planning," Jones said. "So we try to plan for the unknown, and I really believe that has come from COVID."Innovate 78 now plans to send a letter to Gov. (KGTV) - Border Patrol officials in San Diego say they are preparing for the possibility of interactions with 7,000 immigrants seeking asylum at the U.S-Mexico border in San Ysidro.Mexico has already offered asylum to the migrant caravan, officials say. If the group reaches Tijuana, they will be denied entry into the United States.1,300 U.S. military troops are at San Ysidro to support the border mission, but not in a law enforcement role, according to military officials.The Army, Marines, and military police will fill in gaps along the border and erect barriers, creating an infrastructure to make it harder to cross illegally.Border protection officials also told 10News there is no place to put the migrants. During a tour of the San Ysidro Port of Entry Friday, journalists were allowed to tour the holding area but forbidden to take photographs. ICE detention facilities are already at capacity, officials say, and any more additions would push the problem to the breaking point.Anyone who enters the U.S. illegally will be arrested, Border Patrol officials say."We are not going to allow large groups of aliens to come to this county and to enter this country unaddressed,” said Rodney Scott, U.S. Customs and Border Protection.Scott added that if the caravan does visit the U.S., nothing is off the table in terms of stopping them, including a full border shutdown.The military says it views its mission at the border as temporary, and says it plans to be gone by December 15. 1516

But researchers say there are many unknowns about how the pandemic is affecting people without a place to sleep. San Francisco has reported more than 200 infections of homeless people, and New York City has tallied more than 1,400. San Diego’s convention center is housing homeless residents, where officials have administered more than 6,000 tests and uncovered just 18 positive for COVID-19. At the onset of the pandemic, cities thinned out shelters and moved homeless people into hotels because they often have chronic health issues. Scientists have accidentally developed a plastic-eating enzyme that may be used to combat one of the world's worst pollution problems.Researchers from Britain's University of Portsmouth and the US Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) made the discovery while examining the structure of a natural enzyme found in a waste recycling center a few years ago in Japan.They say the enzyme, Ideonella sakaiensis 201-F6, is able to "eat" polyethylene terephthalate, PET, which was patented as a plastic in the 1940s and is used in millions of tons of plastic bottles. 596

The struggling retailer announced plans to close another 46 Sears and Kmart stores.The company has already closed more than 100 stores this year -- including the last remaining Sears in its hometown of Chicago -- as it attempts to stem losses.Employees at 13 Kmart stores and 33 Sears stores were notified that their locations would close by November.When Sears and Kmart merged in 2005, they had about 3,500 US stores between them.
