SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego International Airport expects an increase in travelers during the upcoming holiday season, even as cases of coronavirus surge in San Diego."We have seen an increase (in the past)," says Airport Spokesperson Nicole Hall. "So we are planning for that. We have additional flights leaving San Diego and anticipate an increase in the travel during that time."When the pandemic started, passenger travel at the San Diego International Airport dropped more than 90%. It has since recovered a bit. Airport officials say they're now down 67% from last year.With more people expected to fly over the holidays, the airport has increased it's efforts to make sure everyone who passes through it stays safe.They are requiring masks for every person in the airport. Signs shaped like surfboards help mark 6-foot social distancing requirements on the floor. Seats are marked as "off-limits." Plexiglass dividers line ticket counters and concession areas. And the airport has increased cleaning of high-volume touch points like elevator buttons and hand rails.The airport has also made parking near the terminal free for the first 10 minutes, as a way to deter people from circling while waiting to pick up passengers.Several PPE vending machines have been installed around the terminals to provide masks and hand sanitizer in case anyone forgets it or needs extra.Full details on the airport's COVID-safety plan is available at https://www.san.org/gosafely. 1483

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department has a new million tool to fight wildfires.The department unveiled its S-70i Firehawk helicopter Thursday, a modified version of the military’s Black Hawk helicopter.The aircraft is bigger, faster and capable of dropping more water than the city’s other two helicopters combined. The Firehawk has a 1,000-gallon tank compared to the 375-gallon tanks in Copters 1 and 2.San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Chief Colin Stowell said the Firehawk, dubbed Copter 3, represents the “latest and greatest in fire suppression and rescue capabilities.”RELATED: Chula Vista brush fire highlights rare night water drop technique“San Diego has over 45,000 properties adjacent to canyon rims and open spaces, posing a significant fire risk in our city. The speed of our response and capabilities of our equipment during the initial attack of those vegetation fires is critical,” he said.With a retractable snorkel, firefighters can refill the Firehawk’s water tank in less than a minute, allowing the helicopter to make more drops in less time, Stowell said.“Our ability to quickly get into the air and to make a difference will absolutely help to save lives,” said Mayor Kevin Faulconer.In addition to the crew of three, the Firehawk can carry up to 12 passengers, meaning it can shuttle six more firefighters than its predecessors to hard-to-reach places.RELATED: Blackhawk Helicopter joins the SDG&E firefighting arsenalThe helicopter also has advanced capabilities for night missions, with a high-intensity searchlight and a state-of-the-art obstacle avoidance system.San Diego Fire operates the only helicopters in the county outfitted to fight fires at night.To accompany the new helicopter, the city is building a .7 million hangar to house all three helicopters.“The state-of-the-art, 30,000-square-foot facility will help protect the helicopters from rust and corrosion as well as allow for indoor maintenance work,” said city spokesman Gustavo Portela in a statement. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The woman killed after a loose dog on State Route 94 caused a chain-reaction crash has been identified.Grace Villar, 53, died Saturday after the Toyota Camry she was in was hit from behind by a Dodge pickup truck, according to a report by San Diego's Medical Examiner. Traffic in front of the Camry was stopped due to a loose dog in the highway.Villar was one of three people in the vehicle taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital following the crash.According to the California Highway Patrol, a Ford F-150 owned by the San Diego Humane Society was parked in the median of the highway to wrangle a loose dog, when the dog ran into traffic.Cars were forced to stop and some swerved in the process, including the car Villar was traveling in.
