San Diego (KGTV)- For many people who live on a fixed income buying groceries may be a challenge. But now, 95,000 San Diegans receiving Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, will be able to apply for the CalFresh program (food stamps). “Individuals receiving SSI receives no more than 0 a month,” says Amanda Schultz Brocheo, with the San Diego Hunger Coalition. “For the majority, of SSI recipients, this all the money they have.”In San Diego, 1 in 11 older adults don’t have enough food to eat. “In some cases, we’ve heard of SSI recipients that will pull out a calendar and circle the days they are going to choose not to eat.”The San Diego Hunger Coalition says they are happy about the expansion but say the amount per day the is less than a day. “We determined that here in San Diego County the average CalFresh allotment is .07 a day.” This week also marks CalFresh Challenge Week. The organization encourages San Diegans to try living off a day for food. It’s meant to bring awareness to the food insecurities around the county. “We know that the CalFresh program is our strongest tool to for fighting hunger and also recognize that the current allotment is fairly small,” says Brocheo. “It makes it fairly difficult for people to live on that amount. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --The FDA has placed new restrictions on a controversial birth control device called Essure.The maker of the implant, Bayer, will only be allowed to sell to providers who agree to fully inform women about the risks and side effects.A San Diego woman who had the Essure implant is now suing the physician who performed the procedure.She says she wasn't given enough information and wants to warn others about her experience.Three months after Essure was implanted she began experiencing severe pain. She eventually had a full hysterectomy. 568

SAN DIEGO (KGTV): The San Diego Zoo got quite a surprise this week when one of its Siamang Apes gave birth.It was a surprise because zoo officials had no idea the mother, Eloise, was pregnant.The zoo confirmed the birth to 10News, saying Eloise had been on birth control.The baby was born Monday morning.SDSU student Francelia Amaya was there shortly after the birth. She has been observing the Siamang apes for the past few months as part of a project for her Anthropology class.Amaya says Eloise had been acting oddly that morning."She was really uncomfortable," says Amaya. "She was trying to find the right position. There were a lot of odd behaviors."Amaya got a few pictures and cell phone video of Eloise holding the new baby and swinging around the ape enclosure with the newborn in her arms.Eloise and the baby were taken out of the exhibit shortly after the birth, as was the father. All three are in observation right now.According to the zoo's website, Eloise is "is the best mom a young siamang could hope to have. She's had lots of practice, having given birth to seven youngsters over the years."The zoo says Siamangs are one of a few primate species that form permanent pairs. Eloise and the father, Unkie, have been together since 1987.There's no word from the zoo about how long they'll be kept out of the public eye. 1353

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Ryan Velunta is a Mira Mesa local and is fulfilling life-long Navy dreams. He said joining the Navy is essentially in his blood after his dad and uncles came to the United States from the Philippines, joining the Navy and raising him in a structured military way.“He just exposed me to a lot of aviation growing up, so going to the Miramar Air Show pretty much almost every year was one of them and just being in San Diego you have an airplane flying over you every three minutes, so I always looked up and said okay, I want to do that,” said Velunta.He said he wanted to take his goals one step further.“I wanted to raise the bar and be the first commissioned officer in the family,” said Velunta.So, he did. Friday, Dec. 18, 2020, he graduated from Officer Candidate School in Rhode Island. He had to complete 13 weeks of both physical and mental training. Next, he’ll be heading to Pensacola, FL for aviation training, set to become a Navy pilot.“It is pretty insane because this has been a childhood dream for me and to say yes I’m fulfilling my childhood dream is not something most people can say, so it’s exciting for me to be in this position,” he said. 1196

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- A federal judge says California can't ban vanity license plates it considers "offensive to good taste and decency" because that violates freedom of speech.Tuesday's ruling in San Francisco took aim at a Department of Motor Vehicles rule.The judge said personalized plates are a form of expression by vehicle owners and rules governing them must be "viewpoint-neutral" even if the messages offend.The ruling comes in a lawsuit filed on behalf of five people who were denied permission for their plate messages, including a gay Oakland man who wanted to use the word "QUEER" on his plate. 616
