BEIJING, July 22 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) issued a commendation on Thursday to award honorary titles to 36 grassroots Party organs and 30 Party members for their great dedication and sacrifice in providing assistance following the earthquake in Yushu of northwest Qinghai Province on April 14.A statement of the commendation released by Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee said that the Party organs and members had shown leading examples in responding and assisting following the devastating disaster, under the strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee. One of those awarded Party members, Yang Yong, died in a car accident which occurred while returning home after finishing a medical assignment in quake-hit Yushu.Yang served as vice director of the emergency response office with the health department of the Sichuan provincial government. The CPC Central Committee called on Party members and organs to learn from the awarded individuals, to maintain their loyalty to the Party and obey the Party's disciplines so as to make more contributions to the all-round construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

XINING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official has called for more social and economic development in the nation's Tibetan-inhabited regions to improve people's livelihoods.Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during his visit to northwest China's Qinghai Province on Monday and Tuesday.Zhou visited workers fighting floods on the Golmud River and he urged local governments to work hard to ensure the safety of the Qinghai-Tibet railway. While visiting quake-devastated Yushu County, Zhou urged the local government to speed up the rebuilding of quake survivors' homes.Zhou encouraged the local Tibetan people to be optimistic about the future and to put the disaster behind them.Zhou also visited a PetroChina refinery in the province and called on the company's staff to overcome the difficulties of life on the plateau and to make greater contributions to the nation's energy industry. While visiting local communities in Golmud City, Zhou asked the local police to better serve residents and called on local Muslims to maintain national unity and social stability.

BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese spent less in June amid surging commodities prices and floods in many of the country's southern provinces, according to the latest reading of an index that gauges consumer confidence on Friday. The Bankcard Consumer Confidence Index (BCCI), compiled by the Xinhua News Agency and the national bank card association China UnionPay, slid to 86.30 in June, down 0.09 points from May.Compared with the same period last year, the June BCCI figure was 0.24 points higher. The index hit a record high of 86.89 in March. The reading in June indicated Chinese bank card spending was affected by surging commodities prices and the floods in southern China.Consumers also turned more conservative in spending due to sluggish performances of domestic stock markets and property markets in June.China's month-on-month economic growth rate is likely to have slowed in June given signs that electricity demand declined remarkably that month and the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for China's manufacturing sector dipped 1.8 percentage points for two months in a run to 52.1 percent in June.Xinhua and UnionPay jointly started compiling the BCCI index in April 2009 based on bank card transaction data and analysis of structural changes in urban consumption.

BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhua) -- China's gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to expand more than 9 percent in 2010, Yi Gang, head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE), said Friday.Yi, also deputy governor of the People's Bank of China, the central bank, made the remarks in an interview with China Reform magazine, which is posted on the SAFE website Friday.China's GDP grew 11.1 percent in the first half of 2010 from the same period of last year.Yi said China's economic growth rate will eventually slow down because its economic base is expanding, while the country's development faces huge pressure in fields of environmental protection, resources and energy."The restriction caused by environmental factors has been unprecedented, such as underground water, air, and carbon emission," Yi said.Yi said the priority of China's economy is the quality of the growth."That's why we have to restructure and transform growth modes -- for improving the growth quality and the efficiency," Yi said.
