SHANGHAI, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- The government of Shanghai, the largest metropolis in eastern China, plans to require users of matchmaking websites to register their real names, a move to make those websites a more honest and ordered community, authorities said on Friday.The environment of the matchmaking websites is chaotic and the anonymity afforded by the Internet opens the door to cybercrimes such as fraud, said Zhou Juemin, chairperson of Shanghai Matchmaking Organization Administration Association.Officials with the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau said people who put up personal ads in newspapers may also be requested to use their real names in the future.China's matchmaking industry has been thriving in recent years as the country is witnessing an increase in the number of singles. Statistics from the All-China Women's Federation shows China currently has around 180 million singles.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- The launch of the Mars Science Laboratory, which contains the car-sized Curiosity rover, has been delayed by a day to Nov. 26, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced Monday.The delay will "allow time for the team to remove and replace a flight termination system battery," NASA said in a statement.The launch is now scheduled for 10:02 a.m. (1502 GMT) on Saturday from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. The launch window remains open for one hour and 43 minutes.Curiosity is about twice as long and more than five times as heavy as any previous Mars rover. Its 10 science instruments include two for ingesting and analyzing samples of powdered rock delivered by the rover's robotic arm.Scheduled to land on the Mars in August 2012, the one-ton rover will examine Gale Crater during a nearly two-year prime mission. Curiosity will land near the base of a layered mountain three miles (five kilometers) high inside the crater. The rover will investigate whether environmental conditions ever have been favorable for development of microbial life and preserved evidence of those conditions.

SANTO DOMINGO, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Dominican Republic and Haiti Wednesday launched a joint plan aimed at eliminating cholera, which has claimed more than 7,000 lives in both countries since October 2010.The efforts were backed by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), Dominican officials said.The plan, "Call to action: the Hispaniola without cholera", aims to improve sanitary and living conditions of the Haiti people who face herculean reconstruction work following a devastating earthquake in the country on Jan. 12, 2010, that killed 220,000 people and displaced over 1 million.Cases of cholera, an infection that causes severe diarrhea that can lead to dehydration and death, first appeared in Haiti in October, 2010.The epidemic has so far killed more than 7,000 people and left nearly 500,000 more sick in Haiti.It also killed 135 people in the Dominican Republic as of September 2011, according to Dominican health authorities.Some 500 million U.S. dollars will be invested in projects related to sanitization and the construction of infrastructure that has to do with waterworks in both nations in the long term.

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhuanet) --The air quality has worsened in the Chinese capital since Wednesday, triggering renewed discontent among residents.Without rainfall and wind to dispel pollutants, particulate matter has been accumulating in the air. Most monitoring stations measured PM 10 (particulate matter smaller than 10 micrograms) at higher than 300 micrograms a cubic meter.In southwestern Beijing's Fangshan district, the Liangxiang station recorded 516 micrograms of PM 10 a cubic meter, the highest reading of the day, according to the Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center.More than 150 micrograms a cubic meter is considered hazardous to health.Beijing has been shrouded by heavy smog off and on this winter, and the ongoing air concerns are wearing on residents particularly as they prepare to celebrate the Spring Festival holiday next week."I almost got choked by the smog when I stepped out of the office building on Wednesday," said Yang Yanli, 24, an accountant.
