Gail Devore has been on insulin for Type I Diabetes for 47 years. But in the past year, she started rationing one of her insulin prescriptions because it became too expensive.“We are dying, we are suffering complications when we have to ration or when we can't afford to fill our prescriptions and take it for the amount that prescribed to us,” Devore said. “It's unacceptable.Doctors warn against rationing meds because it can lead to health problems — and even death.“My doctor has said I will continue to stay healthy as long as I can afford to take care of myself at the level I have been all these years,” Devore said. “But with prices this high it's likely I can't. No one should have to make these kinds of decisions.”A new JAMA study found 40 of 49 top name-brand prescription drugs have had skyrocketing prices in the last six years. On average, the cost of the drugs jumped 76 percent. Most of the drugs continue to increase in price once and even twice per year. The JAMA report noted that even competition does not keep prices from rising. Popular diabetes drugs saw large price increases despite doctors being able to prescribe them interchangeably.“There has to be change. Otherwise more people will die needlessly,” Devore said. Both Congress and the Trump White House have promised to find ways to lower costs of drugs, and several bills are in the works. It’s unclear what impact those bills will have since they are still being negotiated by a divided Congress. 1488

House Democrats will vote on a legislative package to reopen the government when they take over the chamber on Thursday, a Democratic aide confirms to CNN.The Democrats plan to vote on six Senate spending bills and a stopgap measure to re-open the Homeland Security Department at its current funding levels until February 8, the aide said. The temporary measure would maintain the current .3 billion in border security money.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has made clear he will not move forward on any legislation until President Donald Trump signs off on it. The move by House Democrats, however, will have the effect of jamming Senate Republicans and the White House as talks for a compromise agreement to reopen the government remain at an impasse.Senate Democrats support the House Democratic plan, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and expected incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have been in constant contact and are on the same page on the plan, a senior Senate Democratic aide said.Democrats believe it's smart to separate Department of Homeland Security funding — and the wall fight — from the other six bills because they think it puts Trump and the Republicans in the position of holding the other agencies and furloughed workers hostage for the wall, the aide said. Democrats believe pressure will mount on Republicans as the shutdown drags on, the aide said. 1402

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed on Friday that one of his deputies was killed during a traffic stop near Houston Friday afternoon. Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal died after he was shot from behind by a suspect, Gonzalez said. Gonzalez confirmed that two suspects are in custody. Gonzalez said the incident took place as Dhaliwal walked back to his cruiser during the stop."A male suspect exited the vehicle, armed with a pistol, and in a cold-blooded manner, ambush style, shot Dhaliwal from behind," Gonzalez said.Gonzalez said Dhaliwal was the first Sikh member of the Harris County Sheriff's Department, and was known for his dedication to the community. Dhaliwal served as a deputy for 10 years."He was a hero, a respected member of the community and a trailblazer," Gonzalez said. Gonzalez shared a story about Dhaliwal's response during Hurricane Harvey in 2017, which devastated the Houston area. "Post Harvey when we needed the most help, he brought an 18-wheeler of people he gathered who came all the way from California to bring goods to our community," Gonzalez said. Gonzalez said that Dhaliwal also went to Puerto Rico to assist the community of a colleague's family during Hurricane Maria. 1222
