SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Petco Park in San Diego will play host to an American League divisional playoff series and the American League Championship series next month under a schedule announced Tuesday that will culminate with Major League Baseball's first neutral-site World Series, played in Arlington, Texas. The playoff tournament schedule was formulated in response to the coronavirus pandemic, with an eye toward the "bubble" concept employed by the NBA and NHL aimed at ensuring limited outside interaction with players.Under the schedule, the San Diego Padres’ home ballpark will host a best-of-five American League Division Series starting Oct. 6. The other ALDS series will be played at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles beginning Oct. 5.Both series will be played on five consecutive days. The winners of the two ALDS series will advance to the best-of-seven American League Championship Series, which will be played in San Diego beginning Oct. 11, also with no days off between games. For the National League, divisional rounds will be played in Arlington, Texas, and Houston, with the NLCS played in Arlington. The best-of-seven World Series will be played in Arlington, beginning Oct. 20, with two off days built into the schedule. The initial round of the MLB playoffs, the best-of-three Wild Card Series, will be played in the home stadium of the higher-seeded team.MLB games are being played without fans in attendance due to the coronavirus, but according to The Athletic, league Commissioner Rob Manfred said during an online event Tuesday that he hopes to see some limited attendance at the league's two Championship Series and the World Series. Such attendance would involve social distancing and other protection measures, "in terms of temperature checks and the like," he said. 1792

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Southwestern College President and Superintendent Kindred Murillo will retire at the end of this academic year after serving 24 years in the California Community College System, the college confirmed Wednesday.Beginning as an adjunct faculty member at Desert Community College District, Murillo has served in various roles. She spent 11 years as a chief business official and served her last nine years in the system as a college president, first at Lake Tahoe Community College District, and then at Southwestern College for more than four years."It is the commitment faculty, classified professionals and administrators have had to the success and achievement of our students that has made my career so rewarding," Murillo said. "Southwestern College has been the most remarkable community college I have had the privilege of serving during my entire academic career. We have worked together to establish a path of transformation for our students and our community."Murillo guided the college's accreditation status from warning to reaffirmation within her first year. According to a college statement, she also tackled a backlog of personnel investigations and complaints, increasing accountability at the district.Early in her tenure, she formed an Advisory Task Force on Inclusion & Race Relations that was intended to acknowledge a history of racism and inequity by design and to "develop transformative interventions designed to strengthen, enhance and support culture change," a college document said.Governing Board President Nora Vargas credits Murillo's commitment for positioning Southwestern College as a model of equity in the California Community College System."Murillo's transformative changes would have taken any other leader a decade to accomplish," Vargas said. "The work she has done will continue to benefit our students and our community for years to come. This will be her legacy."According to the college, some of her other accomplishments include:-- Implementing hiring practices, procedures and professional development that have resulted in the diversification of Southwestern College faculty, staff and administrators by almost 8%, and the leadership of the college by 14%, over a three-year span-- Moving from a 17% diverse executive leadership team to 75% diverse executive leadership-- Increasing graduation rates as measured by the College Scorecard by 10% in a little more than three years-- Entering into a partnership with San Diego State University to launch an SDSU Microsite at Southwestern College that will provide access to four-year degrees to Southwestern graduates on the Southwestern College Chula Vista campusMurillo said she is looking forward to retirement with her husband Michael and her son Vance. She lives in South San Diego County and plans on spending more time paddle boarding on the San Diego Bay and enjoying bike riding on the Bayshore Bikeway. The Southwestern College Governing Board will conduct a national search for her replacement that will include opportunity for community input. 3077

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Tuesday were searching for a man suspected of carjacking another man on a Bay Terraces street. The victim was sitting in his 2018 Kia Forte around 9:55 p.m. Monday in the 1300 block of Manzana Way, near the Hillsborough Recreation Center, when a white van pulled up alongside him, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A man got out of the van and told him he wanted the car, then the victim -- assuming the man had a weapon -- got out of his car, Buttle said.Another person driving the van sped away, followed by the thief in the victim's Kia, which had California license plate 8BCW102, the officer said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Plans to replace an aging terminal at San Diego International Airport cleared a hurdle Thursday, with the Airport Authority Board's unanimous approval of the Environmental Impact Report for its major redevelopment plan. The new Terminal 1 would replace the current 53-year-old terminal, and offer 11 additional gates and upgraded amenities for passengers, including new restaurants, seating, shops and additional security checkpoints.Officials are hoping to break ground on the terminal sometime next year, with the first phase of gates anticipated to open in 2024.RELATED: Travel website ranks San Diego International as best airport in the US"Today, we took an important vote that will help ensure our airport can accommodate expected passenger growth well into the future and ensure our customers and their families are treated to a better airport experience than today's Terminal 1 can provide," said April Bolind, Airport Authority Board Chairman. "The plan will also ensure the airport can continue to function as an economic engine for the region for decades to come."The new terminal is part of a redevelopment plan that includes roadway and transportation projects that airport officials say will ease access into San Diego International, including plans for an "all-electric shuttle fleet" set to launch later this year, which would carry riders to and from the Old Town Transit Center.Airport officials say the new terminal and streamlined transportation to and from the airport will help accommodate a growing number of passengers, with around 25 million traveling through the airport last year. The next steps for the project include federal environmental review and approval from the California Coastal Commission. 1752
