SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A team led by Scripps Research has yielded positive results in a new research study involving antibodies.Researchers say they've worked to isolate the most potent antibodies in the blood of recovered COVID-19 patients. The study was published in "Science."Dennis Burton, the study's co-author, says once they identified the most potent antibodies, they cloned them."You clone the really good ones, and then you make lots and lots of them in production facilities and then use as a standard to protect and-or treat Covid-19," Burton said.They've tested the cloned antibodies, or monoclonal antibodies, on animals, and they've yielded positive results. They hope to conduct human testing early next year.When asked if it is similar to antibody treatments from convalescent plasma donations, Burton says what they're making is more efficient and can be produced for masses.He says the monoclonal antibodies could be used as a preventive measure given to uninfected but at-risk people before a vaccine is available, and could even be useful for people that may not respond well to a vaccine.He also says the monoclonal antibodies could be used to design better vaccines by giving researchers a better idea of which antibodies are most effective. 1268

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego organization is set to hold a job fair in City Heights Thursday, giving young adults an opportunity to find employment. The “CONNECT2Careers Spring Job Fair" will be held on March 29 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Fair @ 44 International Market on 4350 El Cajon Boulevard.The job fair is open to anyone ages 16 to 24. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- After losing her husband and her son to a rare form of cancer, a local mom is doing her part to bring awareness to the disease. She teamed up with her family’s medical care team to come up with a step challenge.“I’m a mother on a mission to find and fund a cure for this disease,” says Debra Melikian.She lost her son Merak in February. He was diagnosed with a rare form of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor, also known as GIST.“He was so strong, he was so brave and determined to live life on his own terms,” says Melikian. “Merak never let cancer define him.”Melikian says the cancer is hereditary. She lost her husband to the cancer months prior.“I have lost my entire immediate family in a mere two-plus years. I do not want any other family to have to go through the despair and destruction that this cancer brings.”When not tending to patients, the care team at UCSD, who treated Merak and his father, would often participate in fun challenges, like Tough Mudder. Nurse Maura Caffrey says after Merak’s death, they wanted to do something to honor him and bring awareness to GIST.The team came up with a step challenge.“Whether you do Zumba, yoga, or hiking, you can do any type of activity,” says Caffrey. “It’s sort of a movement challenge. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A trip to get some fast food in the Midway District turned into a nightmare after an encounter with a homeless woman and a syringe.Just before noon last Thursday, Ralph Bedoe was in the drive-thru line at a Taco Bell on Midway Drive. It was the busy lunch hour. He ordered but had to wait once he reached the pay window. As he waited, he saw a homeless woman in her 40s about 25 feet away."She was rambling, throwing up her hands, talking to herself," said Bedoe.He says the woman hit the hood and window of a bus in the parking lot, before she headed toward him."She kind of hit my mirror and started rambling ... I said 'Do you need something?' Don't know if that's when something triggered," said Bedoe.Bedoe's driver side window was open. His arm was resting there."All of a sudden she pulled up her left hand, which had a bag and a syringe with a needle sticking out. She pushed my hand into the car, and when she pushed my hand, the syringe entered my hand," said Bedoe.The woman then smacked his window and wandered off."Disbelief, hoping you're going to wake up from this," said Bedoe.As the shock wore off, the new father thought of his 6-month-old son. "If I did contract something, how is that going to change my life with him? How is this going to change with length of life with him?" said Bedoe.Bedoe must undergo seven months of blood tests to rule out a myriad of diseases, including Hepatitis and HIV. The uncertainty is nerve-wracking."A trip to Taco Bell should not end with a life-changing event," said Bedoe.Bedoe was hit with a ,400 dollar medical bill because he was switching over to new insurance and was not covered at the time.
