SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego doctor is leading a new national study that tests drugs designed to help coronavirus patients.If you tested positive for coronavirus this summer, there was nowhere for you to go unless you were sick enough to end up in a hospital bed. The ACTIV-2 Study hopes to keep that from happening."So this trial is specifically designed to find those agents to keep people from going to the hospital," Dr. Davey Smith said. He is the Chief of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego and the Protocol Chair for the study."If your symptoms started within ten days and your test is positive in seven days, then you are eligible for the study," Dr. Smith said.UCSD had their first patient mid-September. There are two test sites, one at UCSD and another at Kaiser's Zion Medical Center. Dr. Smith hopes to expand to six test sites."We want to test eight drugs over the next year, maybe more. There are lots of pharmaceutical companies making better and better drugs," he said the goal is to keep people healthy."If I were to get sick and I would have something to prevent me from getting sicker that's number 1. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A resident inside an Encanto home opened fire on an intruder Wednesday, San Diego Police said.The victim first vandalized a car in the 6800 block of Charlene Ave. in the Broadway Heights section of Encanto, according to police.Police believe the victim then used a rock to break into a home where people were inside. One person was armed and fired a shot at the intruder.The victim was taken to the hospital. He may be related to the people in the home, and may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.Officers did not release the victim’s identity or condition. 612

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Kearny Mesa couple says a local hawk is preying on neighborhood cats, and hope their story prompts pet owners to be cautious. Over Memorial Day weekend Caralee and Joe Jaeckels took their cats outside to enjoy the garden. Not long after, they said a hawk swooped down. "At first we thought it was kind of cool," they said. "It's this bird flying around. But we discovered pretty quickly that it was not a cool thing."The bird began attacking the couple's cat Ludwick. Thankfully, the 16-pound cat was able to escape with only a scratch on his face. His owners say this probably meant he was too heavy for the hawk to carry him away. 677

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A judge has ordered a man charged with attacking and stabbing two women to stand trial. A preliminary hearing was held Tuesday for Patrick Douglas, 51.Douglas is charged with two counts of attempted murder in connection with two stabbings in El Cajon and La Mesa on the same day.Police in La Mesa said a female Frito Lay delivery driver, later identified as 35-year-old Dina Hammond, staggered into a 7-Eleven where she had just made a delivery after being stabbed several times.RELATED: Pursuit suspect arrested for pair of stabbings in La Mesa, El Cajon?Hammond was rushed to the hospital in stable condition following the stabbing.Shortly after, Police in El Cajon received a call after a woman was found with stab wounds at a strip mall. The woman, later identified as Shawntey Palmer, was also in stable condition after being taken to the hospital.After the stabbings, Douglas led police on a chase after a Mercedes-Benz matching the description of his car was spotted.During the pursuit, Douglas reached speeds of more than 100 miles-per-hour before the car was found abandoned.Douglas was eventually located and arrested. 1161
