SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego rolls out the red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple carpet in July for thousands of people who will be attending the Pride Festival headlined by Melissa Etheridge. The event, held Saturday and Sunday July 13 and 14, will take place at Balboa Park’s Marston Point on the corner of Sixth Avenue and Laurel Street. Festivalgoers can enjoy performances from more than 100 entertainers on multiple stages, food booths, vendors, and exhibits. General admission is for a weekend pass, with discounts available online before the event. Teens and children high-school aged and younger can get into the festival for free. Tickets are available at the front gate box office when the festival is open. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some San Diego homeowners are making a little extra money and helping with the housing crisis by converting their home detached garages into so-called "granny flats."10News visited the 95-year-old North Park home of Mike Walsh, who is in the process of remodeling his garage. "It was a huge garage and we had a bunch of space in it, so we thought we'd try to convert it into something a little more useful," Walsh said.Walsh hired contractor Murray Lampert to come up with a design that would keep half the space as a two-car garage, while turning the rest into a 230-square-foot apartment. It includes a bathroom with shower, as well as a kitchenette.Murray Lampert CEO Gregg Cantor said many San Diego County cities are making it much easier to convert homes into granny flats, officially known as "accessory dwelling units" or ADU's. The City of San Diego has eliminated some fees to encourage homeowners, while also eliminating some regulations that used to block ADU creation.A city spokesperson told 10News there has already been a significant uptick in ADU applications in 2019. He estimates about 20% of those are garage conversions."They're not always directly for rental," Cantor said. "But I think the upside of it all is creating more rental space in San Diego County because there's a shortage and housing is very expensive."Cantor warns that is important to follow all building codes and to get the proper permits before starting the project, rather than hire a contractor willing to do the work under the table. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego's transit service is getting millions in state funding, as part of billions being awarded to projects throughout the state.San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System was awarded .09 million to update transit routes, add zero-emission buses, and create a new route between Imperial Beach and the Otay Mesa Border Crossing.MTS said they plan to purchase 11 zero-emission buses to operate on the proposed Route 925 between Otay Mesa Transit Center and IB.RELATED: Under-utilized MTS land could be used for affordable housing, report saysThe transit service will also use the funds to improve the America Plaza station, Old Town Transit Center, and rail infrastructure on select lines.“This is a highly competitive grant program. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego State University kicked off its 2020-21 school year Monday with almost all classes online in an attempt to keep students safe and prevent the spread of the coronavirus.While most classes are virtual this fall semester, there are many students who are still living on campus or having to go to school for other matters.Normally, SDSU would have about 7,500 students living on campus. As of the start of this school year, that number is down to 2,600.In addition to the lower number of students living on campus, the university created strict rules for moving in and having guests.The school is trying a positive messaging approach and hoping they can avoid outbreaks similar to what has happened at other colleges in the U.S.ABC 10News learned one SDSU student tested positive for the virus last week and is in self isolation.SDSU fraternities have imposed their own ban on social events this fall, and all recruitment events will be virtual with no in-person interaction.Fall sports have also been postponed due to the pandemic.The university is not testing students who arrive on campus, but testing is available on site.If students test positive or are exposed to COVID-19, SDSU has a detailed isolation and quarantine plan in place.As if having to deal with the pandemic wasn’t enough for SDSU -- students ABC 10News talked to weren't aware of the nationwide Zoom outages Monday, as classes were just beginning, and the school did not immediately responded as to whether the issues affected any of the first day's classes. 1562
