BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Supervision said Thursday it would enhance supervision to key sectors and leading officials this year to ensure clean and efficient work in promoting the country's sound economic and social development.The supervision and examination would target corruption in project construction, real estate development and land management, as well as corruption behind major accidents, the ministry said in a circular outlining major works in 2010.The ministry would investigate officials who meddled in construction projects against relevant regulations to seek personal gains, staff of supervisory organs who were negligent of duty or took bribes, and those who involved in serious commercial bribery cases, the circular said.The ministry vowed "zero tolerance" for these cases, it said.The ministry promised to step up its efforts this year to ensure the implementation of the central government's major arrangements for accelerating the adjustment of economic growth mode and promoting steady and fast economic development.It would also strengthen supervision and examination to make sure local governments will take measures to check the rocketing real estate price in some cities to ensure the sector's healthy development, it said."Lazy and incapable" officials would also be targeted in the supervision to ensure efficiency of government work, according to the circular.China has intensified its fight against corruption recently.In its latest effort, the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Tuesday listed 52 unacceptable practices in an ethics code for CPC cadres to follow.The code forbids conducts including accepting cash or financial instruments as gifts, and using their influence to benefit their spouses or children with regards to their employment, stock trading or business.

This figure, revised up from the previous 755.4 billion U.S. dollars, means China remains the largest overseas holder of U.S. treasury bonds.

SINGAPORE, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said on Tuesday that China will become even more important globally and Singapore must find opportunities to ride on China's growth.Speaking at the Business China spring reception on Tuesday night, Goh said that China has over the past year weathered the global economic downturn with exceptional resilience.Despite shrinking external demand and rising unemployment, China's timely and bold policy responses have enabled its economy to grow at a sizzling 8.7 percent last year, he said, adding that China is now reinforcing its role as the engine for growth in Asia, if not the world.Goh said that the city state recognized China's potential early, soon after China began to open up its economy in 1978.Because of the early efforts made by the Singapore government and Singaporeans, China is today the city state's third largest trading partner and top investment destination, Goh said.As for riding on China's growth, Goh said that the Singapore government will help its companies gain an even stronger foothold in China, and continue to catalyze business opportunities in China.The seven provincial-level business councils, as well as other high-level dialogues and platforms, help open opportunities for companies, reinforce the Singapore brand name and increase its mindshare in China, Goh said.

PARIS, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Nuclear power should be developed with due regulations and in an orderly way thanks to its strict requirement for human resources, technology, security and quality, a Chinese official said Monday here at the international conference on civilian use of nuclear energy.Nuclear power, a clean, safe and economic energy, "plays an important role in energy conservation, environment protection and the strive to cope with climate change," Deputy Director of China' s National Energy Administration Wu Yin said, adding it has became "a major choice to develop economy and optimize energy structure" for many developing countries.Speaking to representatives from about 60 countries at the headquarters of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development, Wu said that changing the mode of energy development, optimizing the energy mix and reducing carbon emission is now a shared aspiration of the world.According to him, China has accelerated the construction of nuclear power stations in recent years. Besides 11 nuclear power units that are already in operation, there are 21 many units under construction with a combined installed capacity of 23 gigawatts.Taking the nuclear security as the top priority, Wu presented some suggestions addressing the increasing global demand of nuclear access."The security of nuclear energy is beyond borders, we should strive to shape a culture on safe use of nuclear power. BEIJING, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Some foreign diplomats and journalists based in Beijing Sunday were invited to watch Road of Rejuvenation, a music-and-dance epic highlighting China's twists and turns in the past 170 years.The gala at the National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) was presented by more than 1,000 performers, featuring China's modern and contemporary history with chorus, dances, and stage screens.Iwona Rogacka-Hu, an officer with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland, said every step of the country's progress was presented clearly in the epic gala and she was moved by the themes of the mother and motherland.Peter A. Fischer, a Swiss correspondent with Zurich Times (NZZ) Beijing Office, said he saw many battles and difficult times in China's modern history through the show."I hope these will never come again, and China will grow more prosperous and open further up," Fischer said.The gala was produced to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China in October 2009. It debuted in Beijing on Sept. 20 last year.Zhang Jigang, director of the show, said so far 40 performances had been staged at the NCPA, and there are 40 more to go."The tickets for the upcoming shows have been sold out," said Wang Zhengming, vice president of the NCPA.Zhang said the gala had been filmed and would be available in cinemas soon.
