BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhua) -- China and India have agreed to enhance political, economic ties and bolster people-to-people contact during a meeting between Indian President Pratibha Patil and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao here on Thursday.It is the Indian president's first official visit to China and the first visit to China by an Indian head of state in the last decade.In the meeting Wen proposed the two states treat bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term point of view, enhance high-level communication and bolster cooperation, in a bid to benefit the two peoples and the world."Practicing mutual respect conforms with the fundamental interests of the two states and peoples and will spark new hope for human beings," Wen Jiabao said in the meeting.Patil said India and China share broad common interests in the bilateral and multilateral fields.She pledged to boost high-level contact, cement economic and trade ties, promote two-way investment and people-to-people contact, and strengthen coordination on major international affairs with China.In her meeting with Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo, Patil said all the parties of India support the development of relations with China.Wu, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, said to promote peaceful co-existence and common development of the two countries meets the fundamental interests of both sides, and complies with the mainstream trend of peace and development in Asia and the world."China and India do not pose as threat to each other and their common interests far outweigh differences," he added.Wu said he hopes the two sides understand and respect each other's core interests and major concerns, properly handle their differences, and seek common development and a win-win situation."A good China-India relationship makes both winners while a confrontational one makes both losers," he added.Patil said the two countries had conducted sound cooperation not only in bilateral field but also under multilateral frameworks including BRIC and G20.The cooperation between India and China in the Copenhagen climate change summit served as a good example of bilateral cooperation in global affairs, she added.Patil arrived here Wednesday for the week-long state visit.

CHENGDU, May 29 (Xinhua) -- China Saturday started construction of a center in southwestern China's Sichuan Province to train giant pandas born in captivity to live in the wild.The center is located at Majiagou of Yutang Town, Dujiangyan City, said Zhang Zhihe, head of the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base and founder of the center.The center covers an area of 134.87 hectares and will cost 160 million yuan (23.5 million U.S. dollars).After the center is completed, the breeding and research base will put 40 to 50 giant pandas raised in captivity into the center for training and research, according to Zhang.The center will cooperate with the Chengdu breeding and research base, the Wolong Giant Panda Conservation Base, the Dujiangyan Disease Control and Prevention Center for Giant Pandas and the Shaanxi Rescue Center for Endangered Animals.In the experimental zone of the center being built, the giant pandas will be trained to reduce their dependency on humans. But they will still live in cages.After five to 10 years training in the experimental zone, the giant pandas that perform well will be introduced into the "half-natural" zone.In the following five to 10 years, the pandas there will live in tree holes or caves and forage for food. But they will still receive frequent checkups and participate in artificial breeding.Then, only one or two of the giant pandas will have the chance to spend another five to 10 years in a nearly "natural" zone with little human contact. Then they will be released into the nearby giant panda natural reserve, Zhang said.Giant pandas are the world's most endangered species. Some 1,590 panda live in the wild and over 300 pandas are in captivity in China, Zhang said.China started a giant panda training project in 2003 to teach the animals to live in the wild. But the project suffered a major setback when Xiang Xiang, a five-year-old male panda, was found dead in a remote part of the Wolong Nature Reserve in February 2007.Xiang Xiang was released into the wild in April 2006 after nearly three years of training.

BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC), watched Friday evening an opera of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) which was adapted from the Chinese classic A Dream of Red Mansions.The DPRK Phibada Opera Troupe staged in Beijing the adaptation of the masterpiece by Cao Xueqin, a novelist in the 18th century. BEIJING, April 22 (Xinhua) -- China's top food safety authority issued new regulations Thursday, setting more stringent requirements on the use and the approval of food additives.The Ministry of Health's "Regulations of New Food Additives," published on its website, set six new restrictions on the use of food additives.The new regulations forbid the use of food additives to mislead consumers about the content and quality of food or to fake food content.Using food additives to disguise decaying and bad quality food is also forbidden.Under the new regulations, food producers are required to use the minimum amount of necessary food additives, and are not allowed to use those that would reduce the nutritional value of food.The ministry would approve new food additives, only if they are proved to be necessary in food production and safe for humans in tests organized by the ministry, the new regulations stipulate.The ministry must conduct reassessments of the safety of its approved food additives, when their necessity and safety are questioned by new research results.The new regulations takes effective Thursday.Food quality in China has been a major concern after a series of scandals.In 2004, at least 13 babies died from malnutrition in the east China's Anhui Province and another 171 were hospitalized, after consuming infant milk powder that contained too little protein.In November 2006, the country's food safety authorities found seven companies producing salted red-yolk eggs with cancer-causing red Sudan dyes to make their eggs look redder and fresher.And in 2008, six babies died and 300,000 others fell ill after being fed with baby formula made from milk contaminated with the industrial chemical melamine.
