Two influential staffers at the Environmental Protection Agency are leaving the agency, CNN has learned.The security chief for EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt and the leader of the agency's Superfund cleanup program are both departing, according to an internal email and an agency statement, respectively.The exits come just days after Pruitt's management of the agency, including substantial spending on his personal security, travel, and office, came under scrutiny at back-to-back congressional hearings.Pasquale "Nino" Perrotta, the special agent in charge of the Pruitt security detail, announced his departure in a one-sentence email to colleagues on Tuesday morning."It has been a tremendous honor to serve as a special agent for the past 23 years and I wish you all a safe journey ahead as you move forward in both your professional and personal lives," Perrotta wrote.The security team overseen by Perrotta, a former Secret Service agent, has ballooned under Pruitt. Expensive and elaborate practices, such as flying in first class airplane seats, have drawn the attention of watchdogs like the EPA's own inspector general.Rep. Trey Gowdy, a South Carolina Republican, has indicated the House Oversight Committee, which he chairs, is interested in interviewing Perrotta about Pruitt's security and travel. Perrotta's predecessor was pushed aside after refusing to drive Pruitt around Washington using police lights and siren, three sources familiar with the situation told CNN.The EPA has repeatedly defended the spending and security practices as necessary given an increased level of threats against Pruitt. (KGTV) - Federal aviation authorities reported the crash of a single-engine plane with two people on board in East San Diego County Wednesday night.The Champion CH7B was reported overdue at Gillespie Field in El Cajon around 9:30 p.m.Thursday morning, search crews found the wreckage of the plane in rough terrain in Descanso, about 17 miles northeast of the airport. The Federal Aviation Administration did not release immediate information about the two occupants of the plane."The terrain is so rugged there’s not even roads to get out to that area. The only way in is through helicopter," said Sheriff's Lt. Damon Blankenbaker.Deputies established a command post at Three Sisters Falls trailhead. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A woman in Santee desperately looking for her nearly 40-year-old tortoise says she's been able to rescue other reptiles during the search.The Texas and California tortoise mix, named Lou, weighs about 20 pounds and is slightly bigger than the size of a dinner plate. Jessica Comfort says he's been missing for two weeks."The night before he went missing, we had a water main break," says Comfort. "With the water shooting up over the roof, we had to get an emergency plumber and back some foliage, and we left the gate open, unfortunately."Comfort says she's been searching for the animal ever since. Signs have been posted around her Santee neighborhood and surrounding areas."The search has been wild and crazy," Comfort said.Lou hasn't shown up yet, but Comfort says she was able to rescue three other animals during her search. The animals included a small turtle, a Reed Foot tortoise that needed medical attention, and a Sulcata Tortoise named Rocky. Rocky will be reunited with his family very soon.Comfort has been working with the San Diego Turtle and Tortoise Society to ensure all of the found animals are safe.
