SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Trips to the grocery store can be tough on the wallets of families trying to make it in San Diego.According to the USDA, a family of four can spend anywhere between 0 and ,300 a month on groceries alone. The bigger the family, the more you spend. San Marcos resident Melanie Anderson says the grocery bill for her family of six was around ,500 a month.“I went to the store with no plan. I would go there and let the store tell me what I needed,” Anderson said.RELATED: USDA's meal planning guide for stretching your food budgetAnderson, a stay-at-home mom of four children, said she and her husband were interested in traveling more so they decided to take a look at their budget.“I realized I wanted to save money so that I could spend it on unforgettable things,” Anderson said.Once all the numbers were in place, they realized they could make changes to their grocery bill.RELATED: Ocean Beach duo cook up 'foodie' meals on a day budget“We were wasting food, we were throwing away food, we weren't planning,” said Anderson.Now the family spends between 0 and 0 a month on groceries.Anderson says her strategy is 'meal planning in reverse'. She focuses on creating dishes around the food she already has and only buying meat, bread, and produce that are marked down or on clearance.One of her biggest tips is calling the grocery stores in advance.RELATED: How to budget when you're on an inconsistent income“First, call the grocery store and ask them what time do you clearance whatever item you’re looking for. Whether it’s the meat department, ask to speak to the meat department. If you’re specifically looking for organic produce, ask that. They are very agreeable in letting you know that information.” Anderson said. According to Anderson, the system is faster than her old trips to the store. “I blaze in there, I look at the produce, I look at the deli meat, I look at the regular meat, the bakery items and I am out of there in ten minutes,” Anderson said. RELATED: San Diego woman climbs out of 3,000 debt holeSome of the items in her fridge include organic mushrooms, usually .99, marked down to .49. Her followers are now posting their grocery store victories. “They send me pictures of everything in their grocery cart. They’ll say I used to spend 0, now I spend 0. She also says you should double check the 'sell by', 'use by', and 'best by' dates because you usually have a few days to use certain items before they go bad. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two people were injured after a fire broke out on a boat in Mission Bay, engulfing the vessel, Thursday.San Diego Fire-Rescue responded to the fire on the 30-foot vessel off Ingraham St. just after 3 p.m.Two people were burned by flames and jumped from the boat. They were transported to UCSD Medical Center, though the extent of their injuries is unknown.Witnesses said they initially saw smoke but thought the fire would be extinguished. Within five minutes, witnesses say the flames grew higher and panic set in."It started catching on fire, people started jumping off into the water," said Jorge Segura, who captured video showing a SDFD boat dosing the flames early on. 701

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Where the 5 freeway meets the Coronado Bridge, under the loud noise of cars sits a historic gem, a staple of Barrio Logan, Chicano Park. "It's always growing, new murals, new activities."Vibrant murals, familiar sounds and a sense of community is often what you find and feel. "I think people feel that energy and see those colors and images of faces that are familiar to them." For 50 years, Chicano Park has united people of all backgrounds including hispanics, african-americans, latinos, and chicanos, in particular. "We like to clarify that we're more than that. Yes, we have spanish heritage but we also have native american and indigenous heritage," said Beatrice Zamora-Aguilar. Aguilar is an author, teacher and member of Chicano Park's steering committee. Her first visit to the park was in the late 1970's. "That was an eye-opening and exciting event, to see so many aspects of my culture in one place. Music, dance, speakers, mural art, paintings, and low riders. It was so many different parts of my culture all in one place being embraced in one celebration." Since then, she's become a part of the park's roots."It's a place we come together sometimes to take action on various issues through the community." But little do people know she said, Chicano Park almost didn't exist. "The story goes Mario Solis is walking through the neighborhood and sees these big construction equipment." She said Solis alerted everyone he could, and together they created a human chain to stop the city from building what would've been a highway patrol substation. This was after thousands of chicanos in the neighborhood were already displaced after zoning changes and factories were built. "They occupied land for 12 days and then started to talk with city officials about fulfilling their promise to build a park for the community." That story lives on through those who were there and now in a children's book by Aguilar. "Children need to understand places and landmarks they take for granted didn't just happen, it took people coming together who really cared about creating something for the children and future." The book titled 'The Spirit of Chicano Park'."Many of those elders have passed on now and I believe they leave a little bit of their energy and love in that park and that's what you feel." 2336

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — When the pandemic forced San Diego's breweries to close, many turned to canning in order to continue selling their brews.Virginia Morrison, CEO and co-founder of Second Chance Beer Company, told ABC 10News anchor Lindsey Pena canned beers is now the majority of their revenue."For us, that's really our only revenue stream now," Morrison said, adding that there was already a shift in popularity from glass to cans. "We've been putting out more cans since COVID than we've ever done before. We used to have maybe three or four releases, now I think at one point we had 14 cause that's all we can do. Every bit of beer we're making we're putting in cans."Now, the aluminum supply is having a hard time keeping up with demand. Morrison said a couple of weeks ago, the Brewers Association warned members of an aluminum can shortage.Morrison said the manufacturers her brewery works with are still able to fulfill orders, but she's unsure for how much longer."We need to know and plan and also work with them really closely to figure out how to minimally impact both our businesses," said Morrison.The Aluminum Association said in a statement, "The aluminum beverage can manufacturing industry has seen unprecedented demand for this environmentally-friendly container prior to and especially during the COVID-19 pandemic."But according to the Can Manufacturer's Institute, aluminum isn't in short supply, but can makers are struggling to keep up with the demand.To make matters worse for Second Chance and other local companies, they're competing for the same supply big beverage makers use. Leading Morrison to believe that at a certain point, one of their last viable options for making money during the pandemic will disappear."I'm afraid that there are some breweries that won't make it just because of this," Morrison said. 1851
