(CNS) - Customs and Border Protection officers found 560 pounds of methamphetamine and cocaine, worth nearly million, cemented inside several quartz boulders at a cargo crossing at the Tecate Port of Entry near Potrero, the agency reported Wednesday.Officers broke open the boulders around 10:45 a.m. Monday after a big rig driver arrived at the border crossing with a shipment listed as "multiple tons of beach pebbles and stones," according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials.Cemented inside the quartz boulders, officers found 229 packages wrapped in black electrical tape, officials said. (KGTV) - Poway's city council is expected to vote Tuesday night to move forward toward demolition of the Big Stone Lodge, which could pave the way for its consideration as a site for a long-sought affordable housing complex for veterans in the city.The property on Old Pomerado Road is one of the most historic sites in Poway, dating back to an old lodge used as a stopover on the stagecoach route into San Diego. Later, it became the location for popular restaurants, a dance hall, and a notoriously rowdy honky tonk. When the homes were built along the current Pomerado Road, residents complained of noise from the Big Stone Lodge, leading to its closure. It's been abandoned for decades and the city bought the land in 2003."It's pretty shocking as far as how dilapidated it is," Poway City Councilmember Caylin Frank told 10News. "We know that we've had vandals. We've had people breaking in to do who knows what. So at this point it's really become a health and safety risk for the city."There seems to be general agreement that the building will need to be torn down. However, there's a battle brewing over what to do with the land. In 2018, the city transferred the property to the Poway Housing Authority, which has designated it for affordable housing. Housing advocates have been trying for years to build an affordable housing complex for veterans. A plan was developed for an empty lot on Twin Peaks Road, but after an uproar by nearby residents, the council voted against the plan 3-2. Supporters of that project have pitched the Big Stone Lodge site as a replacement. Frank says Poway will need to pick sites for more housing, but wants to study multiple options, including the Big Stone Lodge.A group of Poway residents oppose putting housing at the Big Stone Lodge, citing the site's historic nature and concerns over increased traffic in the area. "Anywhere but here," said Mary Shepardson, Vice-President of the Poway Historical Society. "This is not suited for building on." Shepardson and others are urging the council to turn the land into a passive park, preserving what parts of the Big Stone Lodge can be saved, including native plants and trees.Frank says she expects the city to move forward with demolishing the structures on the site. (AP) — Oregon State Police will return to Portland to help local authorities after the fatal shooting of a man following clashes between President Donald Trump supporters and counter-protesters that led to an argument between the president and the city’s mayor over who was to blame for the violence. On Saturday evening a caravan of about 600 vehicles packed with Trump supporters drove through the liberal city and was met with counterprotesters. Skirmishes broke out and, about 15 minutes after the caravan left the city, a supporter of the right-wing group Patriot Prayer was fatally shot. The circumstances of the shooting remain unclear. Video from the city shows sporadic fighting between the groups, with Trump supporters firing paintball pellets at opponents and using bear spray as counterprotesters threw things at the Trump caravan.The man killed was a member of Patriot Prayer, a right-wing group whose members have frequently clashed with protesters in Portland in the past, its founder, Joey Gibson, said Sunday. He identified the victim as Aaron “Jay” Danielson and called him a “good friend,” but provided no details. Danielson apparently also went by the name Jay Bishop, according to Patriot Prayer’s Facebook page.The Washington state-based group doesn't have a significant national footprint but is well known in the Pacific Northwest. They are asking for the public to share any images from Alexander's Corner to Rodman Avenue between 10:45 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tuesday.The United States Postal Inspection Service is offering a reward of up to ,000 to anyone with information that could lead to an arrest.“She is like the most upbeat mail carrier. It was raining and she still was just glowing, just walking as fast as she could,” said Gould.She says it was only minutes after she saw her bubbly letter carrier that she heard the sirens.“The police were out there picking up all the mail and trying to gather it, and all you do is just watch them.”Gould watched nearby as first responders worked desperately to find signs of life.“They tried for the longest time to revive her.
