Six people have died as a result of a severe storm system that caused blizzard conditions in the US Midwest and torrential rain and flood threats in the South. The system dumped about a foot of snow in the Dakotas, Nebraska and Minnesota by Friday morning. It was forecast to bring heavy rain farther east Friday and cause messy travel conditions.More than 11 inches of rain fell across some areas of Louisiana and Mississippi, where flash flood emergencies were issued overnight into Friday morning. More than 50 million people remained under flood and flash flood watches from Louisiana to New Jersey. The snow across the northern Plains and upper Midwest was expected to wind down throughout Friday morning, but blowing snow was limiting visibility. 762

Senate Republicans tallied enough votes Friday morning to block a largely Democratic-backed amendment that would require President Donald Trump to get congressional approval before striking Iran militarily.During an unusual Friday vote that commenced at 5 a.m. to meet various scheduling demands of the senators, Republicans hit the 41-vote mark, which means the Iran measure can't get the 60 votes it would need to advance.Sen. Joni Ernst, a Republican from Iowa, cast the 41st vote. The vote may not be finalized for several hours because it is being held open for senators, including those Democrats who participated in the Democratic presidential debate Thursday night in Miami, to come to the chamber to vote.Democrats knew they couldn't win on this amendment but pressed to have the vote to get senators on the record about the issue.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2019 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. Rudy Arco, 57, moved from Las Vegas to Odessa after the 2017 mass shooting there that killed 58 people and injured almost 700 others, his family told CNN.Arco was one of seven killed during last Saturday's mass shooting. Arco started a trucking company after moving to Odessa, working hard to build his business, his family told CNN.He was driving home from work in his truck when he was shot. His dad was "the last person I'd ever think to go," his son Ardy Arco said, because he was "always just on his toes," and "aware of his surroundings at all times."He was a man of faith, his daughter Julie Arco said."If he said 10 words to you, five of them were about God," Julie Arco said. The family left Cuba to escape communism, his wife, Bari Arco, told CNN."And now we are in America, the best country, the best everything, and we are not safe," Bari said. "Look what happened. He was coming from work, driving his truck, and that's it. He's gone."Bari Arco said she has a message for President Trump."We want him to say that he wants Americans (to) be safe again," the widow said. 1091
