LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - Four former students are suing the San Diego Unified School District and a former teacher, claiming he sexually assaulted them in high school. Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner interviewed one of his accusers who says the school district failed to protect her. “When I was a senior at La Jolla High School in the year of 2003, I was sexually assaulted by my physics teacher,” says former student Loxie Gant.She’s one of the four women who are now suing the former teacher and the district, claiming the district had numerous opportunities to punish or report his behavior, but failed to do so.Attorney Mark Boskovich tells 10News, “The school district knew about these sexual assaults because the students reported [them]. This is not one of those cases where people didn't come forward. They did.”10News is not naming the former teacher because he has not been criminally charged.He declined to offer us any comment on the lawsuit.According to the suit, in 2003 two students reported that he put his hands down a female student's pants, but the complaint alleges that even after the district substantiated the complaint, it never reported it to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office or California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.The lawsuit states that between roughly 2003 and 2014, multiple female students, including Gant, reported being sexually assaulted by the same former teacher. Their attorney says he was allowed to keep teaching until he retired three years ago and now collects an annual pension of more than ,000.“I’ve been trying for years to get San Diego Unified to admit their faults and take responsibility for what happened,” adds Gant. According to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, the former teacher's credentials were revoked last year because of misconduct, but the details of the misconduct and whether it’s related to the allegations of sexual assault are not being disclosed to 10News. LA MESA, CA (KGTV) — Parents of children in an East County school district were looking forward to their kids returning to campus at the end of this month, but that might not happen.Students in the La Mesa-Spring Valley District are scheduled to return Nov. 30, but if San Diego County's COVID-19 cases push the county back to the most restrictive purple tier, that will not happen.Meg Jacobsen is the executive director of the district's education services. Her seven-year-old daughter is also a student in the district."My daughter loves to go to virtual school, but being on a zoom all day can be hard for students, especially little ones," said Jacobsen.Under the state's health mandate, schools that are already open in some capacity would not be affected by moving back a tier, but schools that are closed would not be able to open."If schools have opened for in-person learning, then they can continue with what they are doing. At some schools, where they may have opened several grade levels, say they opened K-3, and they planned to continue adding grade levels, those schools would be able to continue doing that," said Bob Mueller, program specialist at the San Diego County Office of Education.The mandate applies to individual school sites."In other places, where you might have one school in a school district opened and other schools not, those schools would be frozen," said Mueller.Jacobsen is hoping the county's number of COVID-19 cases goes down."This has been a rocky road the past six months for us. Like most teachers nearing the end of the school year, Kelsea Hindley’s days are spent grading online tests and making sure her students have completed all of their assignments for the year.But for this 28-year-old high school French teacher, the end of this school year also marks the beginning of her first summer vacation as a survivor of COVID-19.Hindley was only the second person in the state of Massachusetts, where she lives, to be diagnosed with the virus earlier this year. It was a harrowing experience, not just because of the symptoms she was dealing with, but because of the stalking she said she received from local news media.In the early stages of the outbreak, her case brought with it a wave of fear and uncertainty she had never experienced before in her life. Some people, who she had never met, took to social media, saying she should leave town because they thought she might spread the novel coronavirus, even though she was quarantined at home.“My anxiety level has never been that high in my life,” she recalled. “I felt so bad. I felt like I had done something to people.”Hindley believes she more than likely contracted the virus while on a school trip to Europe with her students back in February. They had left the country weeks before top health officials had even begun to discuss the possibility of stay-at-home orders.Hesitant to tell her story at first, she is now speaking out in hopes of connecting with other COVID-19 survivors, who might be experiencing the same kind of survivors guilt as her.“Unless you’ve been sick, you don’t understand how it feels. It just feels extremely isolating,” she said about having the virus. “Don’t hold this against people just because they get sick.”Months after first getting sick, the social media attacks have all but died down. She hopes other Americans see her case and have empathy for the thousands of others who are dealing with the virus.“I want people to look at people like me and see that we do get better,” she said. “Just because I got sick doesn’t mean you have to treat me any differently than anyone else.” 2104
