SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Newly-elected San Diego District 4 councilwoman Monica Montgomery is vowing to improve the relationship between her community and the police department. On Monday, she was unanimously appointed to the Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee. More than a dozen community members spoke during a special meeting on Monday, backing Montgomery. The overwhelming support for her appointment quickly turned to frustration and anger towards the rest of the council and the police department about Aleah Jenkins, who died in SDPD custody early this month. Montgomery says she hears the community's frustration and is ready to get to work. "A lot of this stems just not from the support of me, but the desire to have real action in our community when it comes to our police and community relations," said Montgomery.She plans on taking a closer look at an SDSU racial profiling study within the department and look into possibly giving the Community Review Board subpoena powers to allow them to perform independent investigations and obtain sworn testimony during alleged police misconduct. "I'm confident we'll do the right thing. Everyone will need to do the right thing; we're at a crossroads and we need to do the right thing by our people and by our officers," added Montgomery. The police department insists there is no evidence of force used during Jenkins' arrest and is referring all questions to the district attorney. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person was shot in San Diego's Shelltown neighborhood Sunday afternoon, San Diego Police confirm.According to San Diego Police, the shooting happened just after noon at the La Michoacana grocery store located at 1702 Vesta Street. The suspect, a man in his 20s, pulled out a handgun and demanded money from the cash register.The owner, a 40-year-old man, opened the register and gave the man money, police said. The suspect went to a second cash register and demanded money. The employee opened the second register and gave the suspect money.As the suspect was turning to leave, the owner pulled out a handgun. The suspect turned to the owner and the owner shot the suspect twice, hitting him in the abdomen and in the wrist, police say.The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital, but police said his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. 879

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors in College Area are a little more vigilant after a coyote attacking a chicken was caught on camera. Matt Dixon was grilling in his backyard when he heard squawking on the neighboring hillside. “One of the chicken flies into the fence,” said Dixon describing the video he took. “That’s when the coyote popped out of the clearing it there and made its way up and he eventually found what he was after.” Dixon posted the 28-second video online and found that people were quicker to forgive the coyote. “I got a lot of flak for not trying to help save the neighbor’s chicken and I can understand that,” said Dixon, “but it all happened so fast.” Other neighbors say they are more cautious with their children and pets outside knowing there can be coyotes in an urban area. 805

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating the death of a man who was found with stab wounds in a gas station parking lot in Webster.San Diego police said they received a 911 call just before 10:30 p.m. Thursday regarding a possible stabbing victim in the 4300 block of Home Avenue.Officers arrived to find a 31-year-old Black man with “apparent trauma to his upper torso,” according to SDPD officials.The victim was eventually taken to the hospital for emergency surgery, but he later died from his injuries. His name was not released.SDPD Homicide Unit investigators learned the stabbing occurred in an area of the 4600 block of Home Avenue, and the victim was able to drive himself to the parking lot of an Arco ampm gas station, where he was found.Police said the only information available regarding the suspected attacker is a Black male wearing a dark-colored sweatshirt.Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the SDPD Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1015

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police body-worn cameras captured the parents of Trevor Heitmann pleading with officers to hospitalize their son just hours before he killed himself and two others in a high-speed car crash.In August 2018, Trevor Heitmann, known on his popular YouTube channel as McSkillet, ultimately drove the wrong way down the 805 at speeds over 100 miles per hour before the fatal accident.A lawsuit filed against the City of San Diego claims, police officers failed “to act in accordance with the statute and carry out their mandatory duty,” and as a result, Heitmann, “subsequently and predictably endangered the lives of others and himself and drove his vehicle at speeds in excess of 100 mph, striking Aileen and Aryana Pizarro's vehicle and endangering other members of the public.”The lawsuit goes on to say, “Because he was not evaluated by defendants to determine if he was a danger to himself or others, he was able to carry on with his erratic and mentally unstable behavior, and ultimately colliding head-on with Aileen Lydia Pizarro's vehicle, and thereby, causing fatal injuries to Aileen and Aryana Pizarro." 1137
