SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Sorrento Valley company is working to create an implant that will help people kick their addiction to both opioids and alcohol.BioCorRx, based in Orange County, is developing the implant. They chose San Diego-based Irisys Therapeutics to help them build it."It’s not going to fix the opioid crisis," says BioCorRx CEO Brady Granier. "But it’s going to be another tool in a tool chest of those people looking for another solution and one that will help them get through the cravings."The implant uses Naltrexone, a drug already approved by the FDA as an every-day pill or a once-per-month shot. Naltrexone blocks receptors in the brain so that opioids or alcohol won't have any effect on people who use them. It also helps curb cravings."As long as it’s blocking the receptor, the opioids come in, and they can’t engage with that receptor to give you the euphoria or the respiratory depression that leads to overdose," says Granier. "It’s protecting you."Granier says creating an implant that lasts three months will make it more likely that people will be able to beat their addition. The implant, named BICX102, would be implanted into a person's stomach fat and dissolve slowly over three months."The goal is to give someone a longer period of time to address those issues without the intrusive cravings coming in," he says. "A lot of behavioral changes can take place in 90 days that you can’t do in 30."Granier's company just received a .7 million grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. It will last two years, which Granier says will fund the research through the development of the implant and some early testing.He's hoping to start human testing by 2020.Granier says implants like the one he is hoping to create are already available in other countries. But the FDA has yet to approve one in the US, where standards are more strict."The first pellet you make needs to be exactly the same as the 10,000th," he says. "It has to be a precise process."It's personal for Granier, who has family members with addiction in their past. He also worked as a nurse before starting his company. Granier says he saw the destructive effects of addiction every day. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An off-ramp connecting northbound Interstate 5 to westbound I-8 was closed Friday morning as officers reassessed the scene of a crash earlier this week.Just before 2 a.m. Monday, a Volkswagen Jetta was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-8 from Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, according to California Highway Patrol. The Jetta then entered northbound I-5 in the wrong direction and collided with a Toyota Camry.An SUV then slammed into the rear end of the Camry, CHP said this week. The driver of the Jetta, identified as Justin Callahan, died at the scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A small coffee shop in Carmel Mountain Ranch is now the world's best coffee roaster.Mostra Coffee just won Roast Magazine's top honor as the 2020 Roaster of the Year."It was a really far fetched, big dream of ours to one day achieve one day," said Mostra Coffee co-founder Jelynn Malone. "So the fact we were able to achieve it in six years is mind-blowing to us."Malone started the company with a few friends in a garage in 4S Ranch. They were looking for ways to help poor people in the Philippines and learned that buying coffee from local farmers can help provide money and jobs to the region."It was rooted in good and wanting to help," said Malone. "We just believed in our mission so much that we thought, you know, let's just go for it. What it's become now is just surreal and amazing."Right now, Mostra Coffee has one shop in Carmel Mountain Ranch, but they have plans to expand. They're opening a second location in 4S Ranch in March and just signed a lease for a spot in Mira Mesa.Malone said their passion for coffee is what's fueled their success."It's very similar to wine," she said. "It'll taste anywhere from peaches to chocolates, to tea leaf flavor notes to blueberry. There are so many different flavor notes you can get out of coffee that I don't think people realize, and you get to do that in specialty coffee."In addition to the new locations, Mostra is expanding into the instant coffee business. They just launched a line of single-serve instant coffee packs."Now you can enjoy Mostra coffee when you're flying or camping or at work or rushing in the morning and don't have time to come into the store," said Malone.Through all the expansion, Malone said they plan to keep the small-batch mentality that brought them this far."The community's been so supportive that I think people will really appreciate having more access to Mostra." 1889

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A thief with a U-Haul truck and young accomplice made off with a haul at a home in Rancho San Diego.Sue Sobke and her husband returned to their home on Calle Deposito Saturday night and found their patio sliding door shattered. "Just a violation. A lot of fear and panic," said Sobke.Inside, two rooms were ransacked. The jewelry box in her bedroom was emptied of hundreds of pieces. Many of the piece were sentimental, one in particular. Her father, a World War II veteran, bought her mother a gold ring while in China after the war. Both of her parents have passed. "Felt close to her ... means my mom and how much I loved her. How much my dad loved her ... now it's gone," said Sobke.Her mission to get it back could depend on a piece of surveillance video. The video shows a U-Haul truck making a turn near her home. Neighbors spotted it parked in front of her home. "They saw a man in my backyard, in his 40s, fit and wearing a hat," said Sobke.Sitting in the truck was a boy about 12 years old."A neighbor saw the boy in the truck listening to music. He waved at him and drove off," said Sobke.Whether the boy was used as a lookout or diversion, Sobke can only shake her head."It's clever. I'll admit that. No one would suspect a young boy waiting for his father. It's horrible, training him," said Sobke.The training may not be over. Detectives told Sobke that a U-Haul truck has been seen near other break-ins in the area.
