A recent study by researchers at Columbia University in New York found that mothers who give birth and are infected with COVID-19 might not need to be separated from their newborns.The observational study, which was published in the peer-reviewed journal JAMA Pediatrics on Monday, found no evidence of transmission from the 101 newborns (including a set of twins) born to a 100 mothers, who had or suspected of having the coronavirus, despite the babies rooming or breastfed directly.The researchers at Columbia University Irving Medical Center said 91 moms chose to breastfeed, and 76 stayed in the same room with their baby. If they breastfed, the moms wore a mask and practiced breast and hand hygiene. The moms who roomed-in with their newborns, who were in isolettes, were distanced about 6 feet away from the mother's bed.The study showed 99 women tested positive and one tested negative, but presented signs consistent with COVID-19, so she was treated as a presumptive positive.Researchers said 55 babies were seen again two weeks after their birth, and they all remained healthy."Our findings suggest that mothers positive for SARS-CoV-2, including those with clinical symptoms, and their newborns may not need to be separated," the researchers said. 1268

A suspect wanted in the fatal shooting of a prominent Houston cardiologist is the subject of an arrest warrant, Houston police said at a news conference on Wednesday.Joseph James Pappas, 65, is the suspect, Chief Art Acevedo said. He has not been seen for the past two days, the chief said.Acevedo told reporters a tip came in Tuesday after surveillance video released a day before showed the suspect, whom someone said they recognized.The suspect's mother was a patient of the doctor and died during surgery 20 years ago, Acevedo said.Dr. Mark Hausknecht, who treated former President George H.W. Bush, was fatally shot as he rode to work at Houston Methodist Hospital on July 20.The renowned cardiologist and the suspect were seen shortly before the shooting riding their bicycles on South Main Street, police said. 825

A rare, deadly form of skin cancer is on the rise in the US, and dermatologists are warning people to take extra care of their skin as we head into the summer months.Merkel Cell Carcinoma is found mostly among older patients, but the American Cancer Society says that there are around 1500 cases reported each year."It's devastating because it's usually not picked up until later stages," says Dr. Melanie Palm. She works at Art of Skin in Solana Beach and has treated one case of MCC. "It's more lethal than melanoma. It often has lymph node involvement. It very quickly metastasizes."Research from the ACS says the disease is often associated with a virus. But it seems to affect older people because they have more, prolonged exposure to the sun.Doctors are calling attention to MCC and other forms of skin cancer all throughout May during Skin Cancer Awareness Month. They say it's much easier to prevent Merkel Cell and other cancers than it is to treat them."We live in San Diego. I don't want people to hide from the sun," says Dr. Palm. "But I think being responsible about it is reasonable."That includes wearing sunscreen, protective clothing and regular visits to a dermatologist."It's something I tell all my friends," says Jen Massara, a skin cancer survivor. "Best case scenario is you're fine, you check that box, you're good to go. Worst case scenario, they find something, and you get it taken care of."Self-inspections are also helpful. Dr. Palm tells her patients to keep the "ABCDE's" in mind when looking at moles."A is asymmetery, if it has an odd shape," she says. "B is Border, is the border irregular on the spot. C is color. Is it dark, pink or have several colors. D is diameter. We don't like anything bigger than a pencil head. And E is evolution, has it grown or changed over time."As for sunscreen, Dr. Palm says you want to make sure zinc oxide or titanium dioxide have the highest percentage of all the active ingredients. A teenage girl deserves a major award. Not because of a winning horse show, but because of a winning chase behind a fleeing racehorse.One of the best racehorses from the 4H at Andover Farms broke free from her halter and galloped down Aviation Blvd during a 20-minute pursuit in Glen Burnie, Maryland.Sixteen-year-old Caroline Shoults was getting ready for her next class in the show when she heard the announcement regarding the runaway horse. Without hesitation, Shoults took a leap of bravery to chase her down."I live by this life quote, 'do for others as you would want to be done for you' and it has got me into quite the situation," said Shoults. "And I tried to control myself and just stay focused, I was about to walk in the rain, and I spun around and took off through the horses in the showground." Followed by two adults who immediately jumped into a vehicle to control oncoming traffic, Shoults aimed to steer the horse into a parking lot or off to the side of the road during the pursuit."I was not about to watch this horse right in front of me get hit by a car, injured, die, anything of the above."The horse finally tired out after a 3-mile run and stopped when Caroline was able to get a line around her.This young girl's bravery runs deeper than just doing the right thing. She too rescued her own racehorse 'Tinkerbell' from a Kill Pen and transformed her from a horse with little to no hope to a stellar all-around racehorse. "People are thanking me so much for what I did, but in the end, I couldn't have done it without Tink."After all the chaos and a gut-wrenching adventure, Shoults was able to finish strong and take on Tink's first competition completing a fantastic run finishing third out of 19 horses in that class. 1839
