(KGTV) - After serving the beach communities of Pacific Beach and La Jolla for more than 60 years, Pernicano’s Family Restaurant will be closing.Johnny Pernicano Sr., the restaurant's enigmatic founder, still comes every night, singing to patrons with his piano and accordion.“I learned how to play all the instruments just by being here every night,” said Pernicano.He and his nine brothers began opening restaurants across San Diego after World War II. As the youngest son, he started off making pizzas in his older brother’s restaurant. But by the mid ’50s, he went off on his own to build the restaurant that’s now on Turquoise Street on the southern edge of La Jolla.Since then, it’s served as the reliable home for birthdays, reunions, fundraisers and family dinners across San Diego.It’s one of three surviving Pericano’s in the county. Two of his nephews, now in their 70's, operate locations in El Cajon and Poway. In Kenosha, Wisconsin, she’s stenciled in Jacob Blake’s name into a mural on a boarded-up convenience store that she and her sister worked on for three days.“I think a lot of people struggle with trying to do something that makes a big impact on the situation that’s going on. For us, that’s painting and drawing for other people it’s protesting,” said Zamora.The situation she’s talking about is the shooting of Jacob Blake by a Kenosha police officer. While Zamora painted, some big-time basketball stars have been protesting.After Blake was shot by a police officer, Zamora turned to art.Others, including some big-time basketball stars, decided to protest.“Over the last few days in our home state of Wisconsin, we saw the horrific video of Jacob Blake shot in the back seven times in Kenosha. Despite the overwhelming plea for change, there has been no action. So, our focus today cannot be on basketball,” said Sterling Brown, a player on the Milwaukee Bucks.Last week, the Bucks refused to take the court for a playoff game. Jo Grayson said she was alarmed when her son, Thatcher, came home from his middle school covered in cuts and bruises.Earlier in the day, Thatcher's teacher texted Grayson to alert her to an incident involving him. But it did nothing to prepare Grayson for what she saw hours later when Thatcher came home and she discovered the marks on his body.After she obtained surveillance video that explained the marks, she became appalled.
