CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Police say they rescued a kidnapping victim this week, after the man was able to signal for help through a car's cracked window as the suspect tasked with guarding him slept.Sunday night, a 36-year-old man was attacked by two men and thrown into a pick-up truck while walking to his car from a restaurant in the 600 block of Broadway, Chula Vista Police said.Police said the suspects took the victim to a second location near Sequoia St. and Presidio Point Ct. and handed him off to a third suspect waiting in a parked car. While the suspect in the front seat was supposed to be watching the victim in the backseat, he fell asleep instead, police say.Police say that's when the victim was able to signal for help, waving a white cloth out of a slightly cracked open window in the backseat. A passerby spotted the victim flagging for help at about 11:30 a.m. Monday and called police.Police arrived and rescued the man and arrested the sleeping guard. That's when the suspected pick-up originally used to abduct the victim drove past, police said. Police say they arrested one of the two men inside the truck who they believe to have been involved with Sunday's incident.Police are still looking for a third suspect. The motive behind the abduction remains unclear, police said, but it didn't appear the victim knew the kidnappers. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the ordeal, police added. 1470

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Worried about having their young students continue to develop reading skills during distance learning, the Chula Vista Elementary School District has launched a new effort to get each students books they can have at home.“When you start reading at a later age, reading becomes a chore," said Dr. Lydia Burgos, Principal at Montgomery Elementary. "We want them to become lovers of books.”CVESD schools are working to find sources of reading level-appropriate books. They have developed partnerships with civic organizations, such as Lions and Rotary Clubs, as well as getting donations from UC San Diego. Some teachers are soliciting cash donations online to purchase books. “We begged, borrowed, and stolen from anywhere that we can in order to have the different levels we need so that all of our students have multiple books in their book bag," said Harborside Elementary Principal Lisa Forehand.Once the books are obtained, they are divided into packets that families can pick up during set distribution times. 1050

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — More than 220 teachers are out of jobs in the South Bay and a superintendent has been placed on leave. Jessica Davis has been teaching in the Sweetwater Union High School District for almost five years. She's just one of more than 220 layoffs in the district's effort to balance the budget that's been crippling for years."I really poured my heart and soul into my career," said Davis. "I love what I do."RELATED: Sweetwater votes to lay off more than 220 educators, superintendent placed on leave amid budget crisisWhen she found out she was getting laid off it hit pretty hard. "I was more than a little bit shocked that they went that high up on the seniority list," said Davis. "That's probably why I didn't take the news so well initially."School administrators also put Superintendent Dr. Karen Janney on paid administrative leave, following a state audit released this week citing evidence of fraud and misappropriation of funds.RELATED: SUHSD: 90 bus drivers paid over 0K in overtime during 2017, database saysAccording to Transparent California, Dr. Janney's pay and benefits combined were nearly 4,000 in 2019. "I don't know that she should continue in any capacity," said Davis. "I think it would go a long way toward healing this wound if she resigned."The cuts come at an already uncertain time with the coronavirus pandemic changing the landscape of traditional schools. But, she's hoping something changes and she can stay where her heart is."I believe the Sweetwater students are some of the most amazing kids. And a lot of them don't get a lot of credit for how amazing they are," said Davis. "What they have done to temporarily solve an issue that they created is not in the best interest of the students, teachers, and families in this community."The Sweetwater Education Association is hoping to negotiate with the board and get some of those teaching jobs back. 2225
