Max Booth is from Redondo Beach and was excited to go to Maine for a summer camp for the second year. This year, that didn’t happen because of coronavirus, leaving Max at home. Then, his grandparents stepped in to save the day.Tim and Joy Booth live in Pacific Beach and said right around when Max found out he would be staying home for the summer, beaches and public places in their area started opening up, so they took advantage and planned a substitute summer camp for the 10-year-old.“It gave us real happiness to figure out how to make something that was at least a little bit similar to what he might have had,” said Joy.The trio spent the last week exploring the San Diego area, completing a long list of activities like cutting wood and barbecuing at a park, going to the beach, playing at a water park, practicing archery, hiking and observing nature, completing a junior park ranger program at the Cabrillo Monument and more. They even took the time to give back to the community, spending a day shoveling sand off of steps in Pacific Beach. They said a police officer and surfer stopped to thank them, the surfer adding that he had slipped on those steps because of the built-up sand.“We swept the stairs because we wanted to help people not get any injuries from slipping on the sand,” said Max.The week may have been different than a typical summer camp, but all three said they had the best time."I would just like to say thank you for being my parents and thank you for doing all this stuff for me," said Max."You’re welcome, Max. We love you," responded Tim and Joy. 1591

Many children are now schooling from home and their screen time is reaching pandemic proportions.Between online learning and self-isolation, school-aged kids that are homebound are inevitably spending more time with their digital screens. And doctors say students are paying a price, citing an uptick in everything from eye strain to migraines."I feel that a lot of kids today have more dry eye,” said Dr. Kim Le, Pediatric Ophthalmologist at Henry Ford Health System. “They’re complaining that they’re blinking a lot, or I don’t know, their eyes are tired. Headaches as well.”These digital bright lights are taking discomfort to new heights. “Sometimes that act of focusing can cause headaches,” Le added.Perhaps no one knows that more than Kelly Billings’ 8-year-old twins and her teenager.“They have headaches, more often than they used to,” said Billings. “And randomly, eye pain, almost as if their eyes are straining.”The Michigan mother is especially worried about her daughter, a regular migraine sufferer, who pre-pandemic battled a migraine every three months. "But with virtual schooling, she has one at least every week,” said Billings. “I definitely know it affects her concentration.”Trisha Rowe’s 8-year-old son, Vedder, is enduring the same battle."He will come up to me and say, 'mom, my head hurts here.' He says it feels like someone’s hitting his head."Doctors say the best way to curb eye strain and headaches for children and adults alike is by adhering to the 20-20-20 rule. How does it work?Every 20 minutes take a 20-second break and focus your eyes on something at least 20 feet away.Trisha says her son’s school has been building in what they call “brain breaks” but she’s also doing her part, making sure his computer is eye level and that he has enough space so he can look away and do his work without staring at the screen. But doctors say it’s hardly just about minimizing strain during school hours. You can’t control what the teacher makes you, but you can control the screen time outside of school and additional screen time from TV watching, video gaming, and handheld device usage has made eye health far worse. Here’s a Rebound Rundown on what you can do to help:Limit your child’s screen time use by re-focusing their free time to more outdoor play and board gamesLow light environments can help alleviate eye strain. Lower the brightness of the screen on your home TV, computer, and other digital devicesEncourage your child to eat, stay hydrated and get ample sleep- which helps minimize the severity of the symptomsOne more thing, encourage your child to hold any kind of digital media as far away from their face as possible. Eighteen to 24 inches is ideal. This story was originally published by Ameera David and Tracy Wujack at WXYZ. 2781

Millions of renters are safe from eviction after the Center for Disease Control (CDC) issued an eviction moratorium at the beginning of September. The moratorium blocks landlords from evicting tenants from their homes, over concern of further spreading COVID-19.Now, landlords are pushing back on the mandate.“My lender wants to get paid,” said Florida landlord Andy Orfitelli. For Orfitelli in Florida to landlord Rebecca Welsh in Kentucky, many landlords have said they cannot afford the financial burden the moratorium is now putting on them.“Literally, right now, I am supporting three homes, households, not just mine,” said Welsh, who is currently expecting a child.“We are concerned that an order like this could force many operators into bankruptcy and those properties could be lost,” said Bob Pinnegar, who is with the National Apartment Association (NAA).The NAA has joined landlords in at least three states in a lawsuit against the federal ban on most evictions.“We were forced into this situation with the inaction of Congress in putting together a stimulus package, and then, the combination of the CDC order laid over top of that,” explained Pinnegar. “It has forced us to where we have to take legal action.”The NAA explained with the lawsuit, its goal is not for landlords to be able to push residents out of their homes, but rather it hopes it pushes Congress to take action and fund the mandate.“This is really to try to force Congress to get back to the table and talk about a solution here,” said Pinnegar. ”We have been told by members of Congress on both the Republican and Democratic side that the next stimulus bill will contain relief for renters, but the bill is being held hostage to our current political environment.”The National Apartment Association wants a stimulus package with money allocated to renters, instead of a moratorium, because the money would trickle down to help landlords pay their mortgages and keep their property. If Congress does not allocate such money or fail to pass a stimulus bill soon, the consequence for landlords could be seen soon
