SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A former San Diego resident was extradited back to the U.S. to face terrorism charges in federal court.Abdullahi Ahmed Abdullahi, a 34-year-old Canadian national, appeared in court Friday on charges that he conspired with several other Canadian and U.S. citizens to provide material support to terrorists in Syria.Prosecutors said Douglas McCain, known as the first American to die fighting for the Islamic State in 2014, was among those Abdullahi conspired with between 2013 and 2014.Prosecutors say Abdullahi and co-conspirators provided personnel and money to individuals engaged in terrorist activities in Syria, including the killing, kidnapping, and maiming of persons. Officials added that Abdullahi facilitated the travel of at least three Canadian nationals and two U.S. citizens to Syria to join and fight with ISIS.Those individuals were reportedly later killed fighting for ISIS.As part of their plans to provide financial support, Abdullahi's co-conspirators encouraged others to commit crimes, such as theft, prosecutors say. Abdullahi is charged with committing an armed robbery at a jewelry store in Canada to finance travel."Terrorist networks like ISIS cannot exist without supporters," said U.S. attorney Robert Brewer. "Protecting Americans from terrorists is our highest priority, and we will work hard to bring justice to those who provide material support to foreign terror organizations."Abdullahi was detained and deemed a flight risk and danger to the community following his hearing Friday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three men who took part in the shotgun slaying of a Pacific Beach resident late last year pleaded guilty Friday to voluntary manslaughter and assault charges.Carlos Yslas, 25; Pedro Ramirez, 27; and Freddy Sosa, 38, were previously facing murder charges in the Dec. 29, 2018, death of 44-year-old Marcanthony Mendivil, who was killed in a home in the 2300 block of Wilbur Avenue.Yslas, who admitted to firing the shotgun, faces up to 30 years in state prison when he is sentenced Jan. 10.RELATED: Suspects in fatal Pacific Beach shooting to be arraigned; victim identifiedRamirez, who faces eight years in prison, is also due to be sentenced Jan. 10. Sosa also faces eight years in prison and will be sentenced Nov. 15.A fourth defendant, Paul Charles Weinberger, 51, remains charged with murder and assault. He's due back in court next week for a status conference, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Nov. 18. Weinberger remains out of custody on million bail.Prosecutors have said that Weinberger lived in the residence where Mendivil was shot in the predawn hours of Dec. 29. However, neither a motive for the slaying, nor the defendants' relationships to each other and the victim, have been disclosed.Officers found Mendivil suffering from a gunshot wound when they responded to a 1:47 a.m. call of a possible shooting last Dec. 29, San Diego Police Lt. Matt Dobbs said.Paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:30 a.m., Dobbs said.Deputy District Attorney Flavio Nominati alleged during Yslas and Ramirez's arraignment earlier this year that both men entered the home masked and gloved.Yslas threatened another witness with the shotgun, then fired twice on Mendivil, the prosecutor said. The men then fled the scene in a vehicle, according to Nominati.Weinberger and Sosa were arrested the day of the killing, while Yslas and Ramirez were already in custody on unrelated charges when they were re- arrested and charged in February in connection with the killing. 2030

SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) - One person was seriously hurt in an explosion during a cannabis oil extraction operation in the South Bay, police say. According to police, the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. Saturday night at a house near the intersection of Lieder Drive and Green Bay Street. One person was severely burned and was rushed to the hospital as a result of the explosion. The person hasn't been identified and it's not immediately clear if any arrests are being made.  503

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A group of parents rallied in Mira Mesa Thursday morning to urge the San Diego Unified School District to reopen schools for in-person learning sooner rather than later.Since March, the district has kept school doors shut, but officials recently announced plans to initiate Phase 2 of a return plan come January.At Thursday’s rally, parents said that's not soon enough."Kids are depressed. We're trying to get them outside safe, but they need socialization and to be with friends. That's half of what they get out of school,” a parent said.City Councilmember Chris Cate joined parents Thursday in support, adding, "Every day that passes is critical."Cate said San Diego's climate could have easily played a part in welcome all students back to class by now."Outdoor learning, why are we not taking advantage of the climate we have here in San Diego? Yes, it's innovative and costly but ideas could be put forward when we know in fact, and have data that says, 'This is working' or 'this isn't working.’”Even though the trend of rallies has made a difference for districts in Poway, Carlsbad, Del Mar and Vista, it came with a cost.One week after Vista Unified welcomed students back into classrooms, five COVID-19 cases arose in their district, resulting in a lack of teachers to fill in and a quick move by the board to set new rules.Some parents in Vista even thought twice about their decision to send kids back to class, including parent Timothy Hernandez."I think they need to re-evaluate their plan and I wouldn't bring them back until next summer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Cajon Valley School District worker crossed into oncoming traffic in his work truck Friday morning, striking a car with a mother and child inside, California Highway Patrol officers said. The crash happened about 10:30 a.m. on Avocado Blvd. north of Challenge Blvd. in the Rancho San Diego area, according to the CHP. Officers say the 55-year-old CVSD employee was driving a Ford pickup with a trailer and made an unsafe left turn movement into oncoming traffic. The truck came into the path of a Ford Fusion and the vehicles crashed head-on. The impact sent both vehicles into the front yard of a home. “Initial indications are that the child safety seat which contained the infant was not properly installed and was found by responding emergency personnel face down on the rear floorboard of the Ford Fusion,” CHP officers said. Both drivers had major injuries but are expected to survive. The infant’s injuries are unknown but did not to be serious, officers said. Drugs and alcohol are not factors in the crash. 1044
