Michelle Ferre, 24, has a passion for running, and has a passion for teaching. Because of the love she has for both the fourth-grade teacher at Crofton Elementary in Maryland gets to live out her dream. Running the Boston Marathon on Monday is the opportunity of a lifetime."To me I think of the Super Bowl for runners," she said. "It is just the biggest honor to ever be able to run in that race.""I am already nervous," she added. "I'm already thinking about it. For me it's just an opportunity to represent my school, represent my students and get to share it with them."Ferre is part of team Hyland's, which is one of the sponsors of the Boston Marathon. She's one of 13 teachers that were picked to be on the team from a pool of 1,600 applicants. Her students surprised her with the news at school. Part of the reason she was chosen is because of her alter ego."Pocketful of Primary is a brand name that I go by as a teacher online," said Ferre. Her YouTube channel, where she posts videos about teaching, has over 100,000 subscribers."For me it was a way to kind of create my own community of teachers to surround myself with and get inspiration from them and just really support each other when we need it," she said. And she's making a difference across the country."About a year ago I actually started a hashtag on Instagram '#pocketfulofpositivity' because I noticed among teachers sometimes there's a lot of negativity with everything we have going on," she said. "So, I wanted to be able to spread a positive message among teachers."Every time someone uses the hashtag, Ferre donates to 'DonorsChoose.org', a website that helps teachers get tools and resources for their classrooms. So far she has donated 0.Her dream of running the Boston Marathon will be realized on Monday then she'll go back to helping her fourth-graders in Crofton realize theirs one day at a time."I've got nothing but positive support from my kids," said Ferre. "The parents and my team teachers, my administrators, they've all been nothing but supportive." 2091

Men who work in construction and extraction had the highest rates of suicide in the United States, according to a report published Thursday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For women, suicide rates were highest among those who work in arts, design, entertainment, sports and media. From 2000 to 2016, the suicide rate among the US working-age population -- people 16 to 64 -- increased 34%, the report says.Using information from the 17 states that participated in the 2012 and 2015 National Violent Death Reporting System, the CDC analyzed the suicide deaths of 22,053 Americans of working age. Occupations were classified using the Standard Occupational Classifications from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2015, the construction and extraction field had the highest rates of suicides for men, with 53.2 suicides per 100,000 working people. Women in arts, design, entertainment, sports and media had a suicide rate of 15.6 per 100,000 working people in 2015.Arts, design, entertainment, sports and media saw the largest increase in suicides among men: 47% from 2012 to 2015.For women, the largest increase -- 54% from 2012 to 2015 -- was among food preparation and serving-related occupations, such as chefs, bar managers and baristas. The occupational groups with the highest rates of suicide for men were: 1366

Many schools are taking a different approach in helping children in school improve behavior.Dee Marie is bringing yoga to classrooms. She says she saw a need to teach non-violent coping skills after Columbine, so she created the non-profit group Calming Kids. The group teamed up with researchers at Harvard University to study the effects.“We got up to 93 percent less hitting,” Marie says. “We got incredible increase up to 86 percent increase in focus. Focus on their classwork, focus on their homework.”The simple techniques of the yoga practice are transforming behavior, even the behavior of bullies.“Students were able to settle in themselves better and started to get some ah-ha moments,” Marie says. “And what was really interesting was that the bullies started to recognize that they were bullies.”Marie’s program is global, reaching several states, Mexico and Puerto Rico. She's going back to the West Bank to teach for a second time next year.Similar programs are offered to help children.Jim and Lyneea Gillen started Yoga Calm when they saw students with learning disabilities or impacted by trauma having a tough time.“Initially I tried to get kids into counseling, but there weren't many services in a small town, and when there were, they weren't affordable for families,” explains Lyneea Gillen. The couple got their business accredited and began tracking results.“72 percent of the kids reported using the techniques at home unsolicited in a response to stress,” Jim Gillen says. Both programs now offer online courses.“It’s a solution to some of the problems we're seeing in schools right now,” Lyneea says. “I think we've met a need.”In Baltimore, some schools have even swapped detention for a meditation and mindfulness room and saw fewer children getting referred for discipline. 1812

MIDDLETON, Idaho — Fourteen staff members at Heights Elementary in Idaho have been placed on administrative leave after dressing up for Halloween in costumes many parents and locals are calling "offensive" and "racist."The teachers and other staff came under fire for dressing as a border wall and group of Mexicans on Halloween last week."They should have some kind of sensitivity training — some kind of interaction with other cultures because this — this is what they are passing on to the kids. So it's normalizing — for them — that these kinds of things are acceptable, when, in my opinion, they are not," said Kevin Vallejo, Boise resident.Middleton School District has now announced it is doing just that. Administrators said there will be an all-district staff meeting for cultural sensitivity training on Nov. 7. Officials said these kinds of training "will continue throughout this school year and at the start of each school year moving forward," according to the administration's release. The decision was announced Saturday at a special school board meeting where the announcement was made and then the school board went into executive session. The superintendent did not disclose the names of the employees involved. In response to the controversy, Mark Hopkins has been named principal at Heights Elementary “for now,” Middleton said. Hopkins began the year as principal of Purple Sage Elementary, according to Idaho Ed News. Board members participated in a nearly two-hour executive session before returning to open session and reading a statement condemning the employees’ actions.Photos of the employees posing in their costumes were originally posted on the school district's Facebook page and then later removed. The entire district's Facebook page has since been taken down."A patron reached out to me and was disturbed by the photos and then he shared those with me and I was equally, I was disappointed and I saw some inappropriate and insensitive costumes," Dr. Josh Middleton, superintendent, Middleton School District said Friday. Friday, the superintendent said the costumes were part of a curriculum unit on character, respect and kindness. Superintendent Josh Middleton said this is a learning opportunity for the district and other schools.  2332
