(KGTV) - A NASA astronaut with a special tie to San Diego is preparing for her trip to the International Space Station. Wednesday morning, 10News Anchor Jim Patton spoke to Dr. Jessica Meir, who earned her Doctorate in Marine Biology at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. She’ll be taking her first space flight as part of the next crew going to the ISS. "There is definitely a Scripps Institution of Oceanography flag as well as some other items from San Diego," said Astronaut Jessica Meir, speaking from Star City, Russia, where she's been training for the past year and half. She'll be applying her scientific skills to a myriad of experiments some 250 miles above the earth. "We will be on board for about six months,” said Meir. “That's the average length of a space station mission these days. And we will be conducting all kinds of scientific investigations, ranging from how our blood vessels and arteries are actually thickening and stiffening in response to the spaceflight environment. And how it affects all of our physiological systems." Meir says the research is part of the quest to send humans to Mars. Much of the work is at the leading edge of science but some is as practical as your kitchen. "Do we have a progress for trash?" Meir can be seen asking a fellow crew member as they train on a mock-up of the space station. "Where do you think we're keeping trash right now?" While very down to earth, Meir says all the training is very necessary. "When we have anything that breaks, like a toilet or need to change a light bulb, we can't call a plumber or electrician. We have to do all that stuff ourselves as well." Of course, all of this amid a little background fact: it requires the guts to blast-off from the comforts of Earth into the ultimate hostile environment of space. "How do you have the courage inside to do something like that,” asked Patton. "I think the biggest answer is the amazing training here on the ground," answered Meir. "The teams in Houston, all over NASA, and here in Russia as well. They prepare us for any situation." Jessica Meir and her crew are scheduled to take off from Russia on Sept. 25. (KGTV) - A Disney cruise ship employee was sentenced Tuesday to 15 months in prison for wire fraud in an effort to embezzle the Walt Disney Company out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.Renan Dias Da Rocha Gomes, 32, who worked aboard the Disney Wonder cruise ship, admitted to accessing an online payment system while working as a merchandise host in stores aboard the ship.Gomes said he made about 0,000 in unauthorized charges to Disney's bank account and loaded the money onto Disney gift cards.RELATED: Ex-Disney Cruise worker accused of embezzling over 5K from DisneyWhile investigating Gomes' cabin on the cruise ship, officials said they found 217 gift cards, a stolen watch, and ,240 in cash. He also admitted to spending about ,700 of the embezzled funds by taking his family on a Disney World vacation, spending thousands on lodging, food, drinks, entertainment, and merchandise.Gomes was arrested in San Diego on Oct. 27, 2017. He will have to pay Walt Disney restitution in the amount he stole and forfeit the watch and cash seized upon his arrest, officials said.Gomes, a Brazilian national, was working on the ship with a temporary visa. (CNN) -- The White House and Capitol Hill is considering a phone app connected to the National Instant Criminal Background Checks (NICS) as one of the options in their discussions for plans to reduce gun violence, according to a Senate source and a person familiar with the talks.The proposed app would be used for background checks using private sales, and not for purchases involving commercial dealers, one of the sources told CNN. The Washington Post first reported on the app.White House aides have spent the last month meeting with congressional staffers and devising a package of legislative measures in the wake of recent mass shootings. The Department of Justice also prepared a package of options that was delivered to the White House more than two weeks ago.On Thursday, senior advisers presented President Donald Trump with summaries of the various courses of action on gun violence.During the briefing, officials did not delve into legislative details and Trump did not appear interested in some of the nitty-gritty of how each proposal would work, the person familiar said.Trump, who has been facing pressure from Republican lawmakers to specify his stance, emerged from the meeting, declining to clarify his position on expanding background checks.Separately, the source told CNN the lack of clarify is leading to doubts Trump will back a bipartisan measure on expanded background checks from Democratic Sen.
