CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Tuesday is transformation day at the Otay Ranch Town Center in Chula Vista. The open-air center converts to a bustling farmers market, playing host to dozens of vendors. 10News anchor Kimberly Hunt spent an afternoon with a welcoming group of local artisans, whose love of food, culture and community shines through. As you walk through the market, your senses are hit with amazing aromas and live music. On this day, the sound of live guitar followed visitors throughout. See complete coverage of Life in Chula VistaThe variety of food vendors is enough to send your taste buds into a frenzy. Kimberly sampled Kenyan cuisine, devouring melt in your mouth chicken. She also stopped by a sushi stand, making savory rice bowls with tempura shrimp. Next was South Bay Salsas, a beautiful blend of fresh, seasonal Mexican/American fusion. “Every week, it's a little different. Mangoes are fresh, sometimes a little more ripe. You take it like it is”, says South Bay Salsas owner Scott Strickland. Strickland and his wife have grown their booming Chula Vista business by adding to their seasonal selections. New to the farmers market this day was Frida’s street tacos. Owner Robert Ayala tried for 3 years to get a stand at the farmers market. Ayala says his first day was a great success. “Serving our people, our community, with our tacos," Ayala said. The love each of these vendors brings to their cooking comes through in every bite. It wouldn’t be a farmers market without farm to table produce. Remberto Cepera owns a produce stand, selling fresh fruit grown on his land. On this day, he has fresh picked prickly pears.“We picked these yesterday," Cepera said. The devotion to his craft is evident. He has seen these beautiful fruits through winter’s frost and summer’s heat. The taste is extraordinary.“It's delicious, and it's good for you," said Cepera. There is a lot more to this farmers market than the farm. There is something for people of all ages. You can take a trip back in time with bomber jackets or flashy disco jackets. A balloon artist delights children while their parents shop.“A lot of people come here for a good time with the family. Tons of great food, tons of great art” said Leo, a balloon artist who has lived in Chula Vista his whole life. He has performed at the farmers market for the past decade. The farmers market is open every Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. 2426

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - What started as a donation to help hospital heroes has blossomed into an ongoing relationship. The San Diego chapter of the North American Taiwanese Women’s Association makes a point to help in any natural disaster. While they usually would step up to help with something like hurricane relief, they made it a point to help with the pandemic.A woman connected to the group who also works at Sharp Chula Vista told the seamstresses that the medical workers at her hospital were in need of caps, so the ladies got to work. They made a batch of caps to donate, and haven’t put down their sewing machines since.Every time the ladies make a batch of caps, the medical staff take a picture with the items and send it back to the creators.“We love seeing those smiles from the medical professionals and we feel like we are really doing something for them because they work so hard for the community,” said Chunmei Carol Lin, President of the Taiwanese American Foundation of San Diego.Since the start of the pandemic, the seamstresses have more than 1,000 caps for the Sharp Chula Vista staff, as of September. The Taiwanese AMerican Foundation of San Diego group and also the San Diego Taiwan Center also donated about ,000 in PPE to the hospital.Eventually, the continuing exchange of donations and pictures earned the group of women a nickname: "Sewing angels."“We thought it was maybe a one, two-time thing but here we are months into COVID and we’re still getting donations from these hard-working ladies every other week without fail,” said Leslie Del Cruz-Torio, who works as a Patient Safety Program Coordinator and distributes the caps when they arrive. 1695

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Port of San Diego and City of Chula Vista reached a milestone today, approving the financial agreement for the Chula Vista Bayfront resort hotel and convention center project."It's taken us 30 years to get to this day, and it's certainly worth it," Chula Vista Mayor, Mary Casillas Salas said. Officials also authorized a revenue-sharing agreement between the two agencies. The entire project will cost .1 billion. Of that, RIDA Developement will invest 5 million. The city and the port authority will pay for a combined 0+ million. Port commissioners said it is a large investment for an even larger long-term reward. "As far as what we'll get back, we will see an immediate impact by the fact that it's going to create 10,000 construction jobs, and it's going to put about a billion dollars in the local and regional economy," Moore said. RELATED: South Bay residents get an idea of massive bayfront developmentIn August of 2017, the City gave residents a better idea of what the Bayfront will look like in the next 20 years. The anchor for the Bayfront is set to be a .1 billion resort hotel and convention center that the city says will be built by Houston-based RIDA Development. The current Chula Vista RV Park will also move roughly a mile away to make room for construction. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Long before Chula Vista became San Diego County's second-largest city, it was rural farmland with citrus groves from San Diego Bay to Otay Mountain. "It was known as the lemon capital of the world," says Chula Vista history librarian Tanya Carr. Lemons, oranges, and lots of celery once dominated Chula Vista’s landscape. That began to change in 1911 when Chula Vista was officially incorporated as a California city. "Those lemon fields were replaced by Third Avenue, and that was our big main street in Chula Vista," adds Carr.See complete coverage of Life in Chula VistaFarming established Chula Vista's diverse culture but World War II began the city's rapid rise in population."I'm considered what's called the Navy brat," says Harry Orgovan. Harry Orgovan is the president of the South Bay Historical Society and the Chula Vista Heritage Museum. His family and many other military families like his moved to Chula Vista during the war, tripling the population from 5,000 residents to 16,000 by 1950. "In a sense, life was simpler back then and more innocent," adds Orgovan. World War II brought an industrial revolution to Chula Vista. The Rohr Aircraft Corporation opened with as many as 11,000 employees building power units for the B-24 Liberator. "You hear Rohr and just about every other person you talk to in Chula Vista either worked for Rohr, retired from Rohr, had family that worked for Rohr, and it provided thousands of jobs for the community," says Carr.TIMELINE: Chula Vista through the yearsWhen men left to fight in the war, women took over in the factories, changing the workforce as we know it. After the war, Chula Vista saw even more growth. It was a melting pot of Caucasians, Japanese, Filipinos, Mexicans, and more.Shelley Rudd, a Chula Vistan since age two, was also an elementary school teacher and witnessed the diverse culture first hand."I love the diversity of Chula Vista,” says Rudd. “I would have from five to seven primary languages in my classroom every year."As for notables, Chula Vista is home to Rita Hayworth, Mario Lopez, the 2009 Little League World Series Champs, and the Olympic Training Center. The city's best days may be yet to come with the much-anticipated development of the Chula Vista Bayfront."It's going to put us on the map as a thriving, culturally diverse, desirable tourist destination," says Carr with a big smile. 2416
