SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Poway rabbi who survived a gunman's rampage on his synagogue over a year ago is facing probation after pleading guilty to federal charges of tax fraud and wire fraud, the U.S. Attorney's Office in San Diego said in a press conference Tuesday.Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein pleaded guilty to participating in a 90-10 "tax deduction conspiracy" in which Goldstein collected large donations to Chabad of Poway, but then secretly returned 90 percent of the contribution back to the individual along with a receipt."The donors then illegally claimed huge tax deductions for these fake donations, and Rabbi Goldstein kept for himself 10 percent of the donations which over the course of this fraud totaled more than 0,000," said United States Attorney Robert S. The rabbi learned about the investigation in 2018 after federal agents served search warrants at his home and office.Brewer said Goldstein submitted fraudulent invoices to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other entities in order to obtain grant funding. The rabbi created fake invoices using a fictitious construction company to receive money for property damage repairs caused by the 2007 San Diego wildfires. Goldstein obtained grants to make improvements or repairs to Chabad, but he instead pocketed the money, according to the criminal complaint.Goldstein, 58, fell into the national spotlight in April 2019 after a gunman armed with an AR-15 style weapon opened fire inside the Chabad of Poway during the final day of Passover. The shooting left one person dead and three others injured, including a young girl.Federal officials have charged suspected gunman John Earnest with 109 total hate crime-related violations. Under the federal charges, Earnest faces a possible death sentence.Goldstein was shot in both index fingers and lost one of his index fingers as a result. The rabbi was invited to the National Prayer Breakfast at the White House days after the incident.In response to the charges, the Chabad of Poway said it removed Goldstein from his duties and terminated its relationship with him."Upon learning of these allegations some months ago, we launched an internal review, following which the rabbi was removed from all of his duties at Chabad of Poway, his relationship with the organization terminated, and he was dismissed by Chabad-Lubavitch Headquarters as a representative of the movement," the Chabad of Poway said in a statement."We hope and pray that Rabbi Goldstein finds the professional help that he needs and makes amends to our country and to the people he has hurt. YPSILANTI, Mich. — One entrepreneur thinks flying cars will one day change the way Americans travel — even though his creation almost cost him his life.Sanjay Dhall, the founder of Detroit Flying Car Company, is still recovering from a December crash at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti. Dhall said he was testing out the controls in his flying car prototype when he accidentally took off and found himself 150 feet in the air.“It was a miraculous escape. I did break a lot of bones from head to toe,” Dhall said. “… But amazingly the machine took the majority of the impact and I survived.”The machine was destroyed.“One wrong calculation can mean the difference between life and death,” Dhall said. He says he now is more committed than ever to getting the technology right.“I still want to get back and build another prototype, a demonstrator vehicle that will succeed,” Dhall said.A study released this week by the University of Michigan motivates him. It found that for trips of about 60 miles and longer, a fully-loaded flying car carrying a pilot and three passengers had 52% lower greenhouse gas emissions and time savings compared to ground-based gasoline powered cars with an average vehicle occupancy of 1.54."Consumers could be incentivized to share trips, given the significant time savings from flying versus driving," The study's author, Akshat Kasliwal, said.The study found flying cars would travel the 60 miles much faster, resulting in a time savings of about 80 percent compared to cars driving on the road.When compared to electric cars, fully-loaded flying cars still had 6% lower greenhouse gas emissions on trips longer than 60 miles.“When flight happens, constraints are gone. And when constraints go away things have a way of going cleaner ways,” Dhall said.The study did find that on short trips, it is more efficient to stay on the ground.Dhall points out that his prototype features wings that retract into the vehicle, allowing travel by road or sky. In theory, he says it could be an overall greener way of traveling.He says he named his company in honor of the Detroit inventors who changed the way people around the world travel.He believes flying cars will do the same in the future. 2229

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) - San Diego Police shot a man who died Wednesday at a San Ysidro mobile home park. The incident happened at Willow Road and East Calle Primera about 1:45 p.m., police confirmed.According to police, witnesses say the suspect, who was only described as a Hispanic man in his 50s, was walking through mobile home park with an AK-47-style rifle. A witness told police that the man was acting odd and appeared to be hiding from someone. Several people in the area say the man pointed the rifle at them. After police arrived on scene, the man approached the officers’ location and fired a round from the rifle, police say. An officer ordered the man to drop the weapon, but he didn’t cooperate. At that point, a witness said the man raised the weapon in the direction of the officers and gunshots were heard again before the suspect fell to the ground. Officers administered first aid until medics arrived. The suspect, who hasn’t yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed that one officer, a 2-and-a-half year veteran of the department, shot the man. The officer’s name isn’t being released at this time.  A woman wielding a kitchen knife has attacked at least 14 children at a kindergarten in Chongqing in central China, local police said Friday.Chongqing City Banan District police said the children were slashed as they walked back to class after their morning exercises at Yudong New Century Kindergarten about 9.30 a.m. local time.Videos circulating on Chinese social media showed small children bleeding from severe cuts to their faces at the entrance of the kindergarten as stunned adults looked on.School security guards and staff restrained the 39-year-old attacker and took her into custody. Video from the scene appeared to show angry onlookers attempting to hit and kick the woman after she was detained.Chongqing resident Xia Yang said the attack had shocked residents of the city, a metropolis of some 30 million people.Nearby residents said the kindergarten doesn't have any outdoor space for the children, and they have to use a local public park for their morning exercises."It happened when the children were entering the school gate ... The attacker just ran at them with a knife. The teachers were dumbstruck," said Zhang Jing, who lives close to the school.He told CNN old people out shopping for groceries had intervened to stop the attack.An unknown number of students were taken to a nearby hospital following the incident, according to police.Video from the hospital showed adults wailing in grief as children covered in blood were rushed from ambulances into the building. In another video, a child whose head is wrapped in bandages was pushed past on a gurney, as crowds looked on.Zhang said after the knife attack and recent scandals over faulty medicine for children, he's increasingly skeptical of the government's ability to look after his own daughter."It is terrifying. Police are continuing to investigate.Friday's incident isn't the first time school children in China have been hurt by people wielding knives.
