Lorenzo Liberti is a teenage flag maker."The day that I stop working is a day that a hero could be forgotten," says the 15-year-old from Lakewood Ranch.Using pinewood and prodigious talent, Lorenzo works day and night in his garage hand-carving Heroic Flags, gorgeous, time-consuming tributes to American heroes he sells and donates to help people in need."As long as you're living, you're here for a purpose," he says.Lorenzo has only been creating the flags for the past eight months or so. He's made about 50 so far and raised thousands of dollars for children with special needs, homeless veterans, and Bradenton's Turning Points nonprofit."This is bigger than me," he says.The pandemic has inspired Lorenzo's newest mission: honoring medical workers across the country.He's raising money to try and get one of his flags in a hospital in every state: 50 flags, all across America. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Dodger World Series celebrations devolved into looting and vandalism, leading to 18 arrests and left three Los Angeles police officers with minor injuries, authorities said Wednesday.The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department arrested 10 suspects, including eight in the East Los Angeles area for failing to obey a dispersal order. No major property damage occurred in its patrol areas.Meanwhile, the LAPD arrested eight people, and three officers suffered minor injuries in doing so.Around 1 a.m., the department declared an unlawful assembly in an area roughly bounded by Eighth Street and Pico Boulevard from Broadway to Figueroa Street.Celebrations of the Dodgers' first championship since 1988 erupted across the city Tuesday night, but things got unruly in downtown Los Angeles, where crowds looted a tractor-trailer and some retail outlets, while throwing objects at officers and vandalizing a police vehicle."We are still dealing with a large, and at times unruly, crowd in the Downtown L.A. area," the LAPD tweeted just after midnight. "There are several street closures and areas of heavy traffic congestion."Please stay clear of the (downtown Los Angeles) area and expect a large police presence."Officers, some on horseback, made their way through downtown streets, occasionally firing non-lethal rounds to disperse a crowd in the area of Eighth and Flower streets, video posted online showed.Fireworks were being set off in the area of Eighth Street and Grand Avenue and a bonfire was ignited near Flower and Ninth streets, where glass bottles were thrown at officers, police said.Video posted on social media showed a Los Angeles police cruiser covered in graffiti and the back window shattered, while an officer wearing riot gear sat inside.A big rig passing through a large crowd of fans celebrating near Grand Avenue and Olympic Boulevard around 11 p.m. Tuesday was looted.Video from the scene showed fans inside the trailer of the big rig, grabbing boxes, while others ran along the top of the trailer. Fans in vehicles in downtown Los Angeles and Pacoima did doughnuts in some intersections, causing smoke from the tires to fill the streets.Video from CBS2 showed a driver doing doughnuts as fans tossed fireworks into the intersection. The vehicle ran over the fireworks, at least one of which ignited the rear passenger side tire, lighting up the vehicle's undercarriage as fans yelled to alert the driver of the flames shooting from the rear of the vehicle.There was also a celebration outside Dodger Stadium while fireworks erupted in Echo Park near the stadium.Streets in the area were closed to traffic, with police helping drivers get out of the area after the game.Crowds could be heard screaming and cheering as motorists honked their horns. Dozens of people were on sidewalks celebrating at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Logan Street.Just to the west, just past a police blockade at Alvarado Street just before 11 p.m., one young male on the sidewalk was overheard saying to his friends, "Let's go (expletive) loot!" as a driver lobbed small fireworks into the path of pedestrians and drivers.A few minutes later, police left the area and motorists began drifting maneuvers. Smoke from burnt rubber at times made the competing cars circling the Sunset and Alvarado intersection nearly disappear. This carried on -- with powerful fireworks creating a gunfire-like backdrop -- until just after 11:30 p.m. when police re-responded.The Los Angeles Police Department was placed under a citywide tactical alert as a precaution during celebrations of the Dodgers' championship, according to Officer Luis Garcia.A tactical alert is a "an announcement of the anticipated redistribution of on-duty officers to achieve personnel levels necessary for controlling an emergency," according to the LAPD. Officers are kept on the job beyond the end of their shifts.Metro bus service was delayed or detoured in several areas due to fan celebrations, according to Metro's Rick Jager.Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, retired Dodger broadcaster Vin Scully and LAPD Chief Michel Moore were among those who had urged fans to celebrate at home."As we celebrate this incredible @Dodgers victory tonight, we need to remember that COVID-19 is still here and still dangerous," Garcetti tweeted. They’re hoping to address the issue by asking why people believe and share false information.Researchers say the process people use to process and share information, particularly on social media, can help provide some answers. Studies show people tend to use cognitive shortcuts when they decide what to share online.For a person sharing a particular article or picture, those shortcuts involve asking themselves:Is the content consistent with what they have shared before?Is the content consistent with what most others share?Does the content come from a credible source?Researchers think manipulating those factors could be key in getting people to share posts with misinformation and increase its organic reach.Experts think age is another factor in how misinformation spreads online.One study found people 65 and older shared seven times more misinformation on social media during the 2016 election cycle than the youngest age group studied. Researchers say a lack of digital media literacy in seniors could help explain the gap. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - County public health officials said have ordered the continued closure of LA Apparel's manufacturing facilities in South Los Angeles, announcing that more than 300 workers have been confirmed with the coronavirus and four have died.The company's manufacturing complex on 59th Street was originally closed June 27 after inspectors found "flagrant" violations of infection- control protocols and the company "failed to cooperate" with the county's investigation of what were then about 150 total infections.According to the county Department of Public Health, an official order was issued Thursday mandating the "continuous closure" of the facility.Officials with LA Apparel could not be reached for comment Friday when county officials announced the extended closure."The death of four dedicated garment workers is heartbreaking and tragic," public health director Barbara Ferrer said in a statement. "Business owners and operators have a corporate, moral and social responsibility to their employees and their families to provide a safe work environment that adheres to all of the health officer directives -- this responsibility is important, now more than ever, as we continue to fight this deadly virus."Public health officials said Friday three workers from the plant died in early June, and one more died this month. The agency began investigating conditions at the plant on June 19 after being notified by a "concerned health care provider."According to the department, investigators asked the company for a list of all employees so it could be compared with testing results, but the company failed to provide it.In late June, inspectors found violations at the facility of distancing requirements and infection-control protocols, according to the department, noting that the company was using cardboard as a barrier between workers.On July 4, the company sent the department an "incomplete list" of employees, and by then 198 positive cases had been reported. But as of Friday, that number had risen to more than 300, according to the public health agency.Health officials said that despite the company being ordered closed in late June, LA Apparel reopened the factory with new employees, and company officials tried to prevent health inspectors from entering the facility. 2309

LONDON (AP) — Oxford University says trials of a coronavirus vaccine that it is developing with pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca will resume, days after being paused due to a reported side-effect in a patient in the U.K. The university said in large trials such as this “it is expected that some participants will become unwell and every case must be carefully evaluated to ensure careful assessment of safety.” It said globally 18,000 people have received the vaccine so far. Oxford insisted that it is “committed to the safety of our participants.” Pauses in drug trials are commonplace.
