SAN DIEGO (CNS)  - A 39-year-old woman suffered some head injuries Saturday morning during a home invasion at a residence in the Nestor community of San Diego, where one of two suspects fired a shot into the structure, shattering the glass of a rear patio door.No property was taken, said Officer Steve Bourasa of the San Diego Police Department.The woman was with her 45-year-old husband at their home in the 1500 block of Oro Vista Road when someone knocked on their front door a little before 1:30 a.m. and asked for a woman, Bourasa said.``The woman told the male no one by that name lived there," he said. ``The male left the front door and went to the rear of the residence, where he was joined by another male. The two males jumped the patio fence and began banging on the rear glass patio door."One of the suspects fired a shot into the patio door, shattering the glass and one of the two suspects entered the home, he said.He confronted the woman, demanded money and punched her several times when she said she did not have any money, he said.``Meanwhile, the husband had exited the front door and went around to the rear of the residence, where he saw the other male standing on the grass," Bourasa said. ``That male pointed a handgun at the husband and then fled."The man heard his wife screaming, ran back inside his home and saw her being assaulted by one of the two suspects. The man then began punching the suspect who had been assaulting his wife, causing the suspect to flee the residence, where he jumped over the patio fence and ran off, he said.The 39-year-old woman was transported to an area hospital, he said.One suspect was described as a 20 to 30 year old Latino man with a normal 5-foot, 7-inch tall normal build. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with black pants and glasses.The second suspect was described as a 20 to 30 year old Latino man with a 6-foot, 2-inch tall normal. SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) - Trial started Monday for the Yuma, Arizona police officer accused of raping a woman during a visit to San Diego.Jared Elkins, 34, is charged with eight felony counts of rape for the alleged incident in September 2017.The 23-year-old woman’s mother called 911 to report a crime at a home on Marlborough Street in Kensington. Elkins, who is related to the alleged victim by marriage, was staying at her home.Elkins, the alleged victim, and two other family members went to dinner then watched a movie while drinking beer and wine at the home before the alleged assault occurred, according to prior court testimony.RELATED: Arizona police officer charged with raping San Diego womanThe alleged victim testified during a preliminary hearing in April that Elkins physically forced her to participate in sex acts despite her pleas for him to stop. The two other family members were asleep in the house so small "you can hear someone breathing in the next room," the woman testified.During the alleged assault, the woman said she asked Elkins what would happen if she cried out for help. "He said, ‘I would kill you,"' the woman testified. After the incident, the woman said she found another family member in the house and they called police.At a hospital, the alleged victim's blood-alcohol level was determined to be .09 percent, according to witness testimony.Besides forcible rape, Elkins is charged with rape of an intoxicated person, forcible digital penetration, two counts each of forcible oral copulation and oral copulation of an intoxicated person, forcible sexual penetration and sexual penetration of an intoxicated person.Elkins -- a seven-year veteran of the Yuma Police Department who later resigned -- faces 14 years in prison if convicted, according to Deputy District Attorney Lisa Fox. 1834

The man who died did not have underlying health conditions.Saturday marked the sixth time in seven days that health authorities reported more than 300 new COVID-19 cases. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Bankers Hill man returned home to a knife-wielding man in his kitchen, leading to a frantic dash out of the neighborhood."I heard my neighbor pull up. I'm a light sleeper. Within a couple minutes, I heard sirens coming from every direction," said Tom.Tom, who asked us not to identify him, says two Sundays ago before 1 a.m., surveillance cameras showed his neighbor parking in front of his home. In the video, the homeowner is seen walking to his front door. An outdoor light turns off, and suddenly, another light comes on. Tom says that's when his neighbor encountered a stranger in his kitchen."He came home and found the guy standing at his back door with a bottle of alcohol from his cabinet, and a knife from his butcher block. He backed off a bit and called police," said Tom.The intruder ran out the back. He is then seen making his way to the front of the home, across the street and right to Tom's front door."He tries to get into my house. It's locked so he takes off down the street," said Tom. Tom says a man fitting the same description has been spotted stealing bikes and casing homes in the area. As for the recent break-in, Tom says it's not clear how the man got in, but video of the motion-activated lights suggest he was in the home for nearly an hour."It's more than a violation. You start to lose your sense of security, and that's the worst part of it," said Tom.The intruder is described as a white male, between 20 and 30 years old, 5’6"-5’8", 155 lbs, with tattoos on both forearms. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A California lawmaker is planning to move forward on a housing bill that would eliminate hyper low-density zoning near transit and job centers.Senate Bill 50 aims to clear the way for apartment buildings and affordable housing in those locations so more people can live near transit and near where they work, proponents say.California State Senator Scott Wiener of San Francisco tells 10News, in January SB 50 will come back before the Senate, and he intends to move it forward.RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Zoning rules partially responsible for low housing supply, report says"California has a massive housing shortage – which threatens our economy, environment, and diversity – and state action is essential to solve this major problem," Wiener said in a statement.While they wait for action at the state level, some San Diego community groups are pushing for local lawmakers to move forward with their version, dubbed SD 50."We are still working in these neighborhoods to try and change those communities," said Ricardo Flores, executive director of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) San Diego.Flores said the City of San Diego needs to end its single-family home zoning regulations. "I believe San Diegans should be in control of what happens in our neighborhoods. There was nothing in SB 50 to mandate that."If San Diego updated its zoning policies, it wouldn't be alone.City leaders in Minneapolis passed "Minneapolis 2040" which aims to increase affordable housing and racial disparities in housing.Ricardo Flores said he believes it's time for politicians to make San Diego more inclusive."If you own a single-family home on your lot and you want to keep that you should be allowed to keep it, but if you like me and are interested in building a couple extra units for mom and dad to move into or to rent it out to help pay for a mortgage you should be allowed to do that," Flores said.In a statement to 10News, San Diego City Council member and Land Use and Housing Committee member Scott Sherman wrote, "A recent study noted that 47 percent of housing costs are due to government red tape and regulation. Since taking office, I have worked to reform land use codes and streamline the permitting process to make homebuilding less expensive.
