Google and Apple teamed up to create a software that allows a COVID-19 tracking app to work. It’s part of a recent software update on smartphones. Now, Virginia is the first state to make an app using the technology. It's called COVIDWISE. It's similar to contact tracing but isn't exactly the same.COVIDWISE uses Bluetooth technology to measure distance between different people and how much time they've spent together. Both people need to have the app installed.Users will receive an alert if someone around them tests positive for coronavirus and it won't reveal who it was. While not everybody needs to have the app, the more people who do, the better.“For every one to two app users, you're potentially averting one infection, so I think that's a good take-home message,” said Jeff Stover, Executive Program Advisor at the Virginia Department of Health. “So, obviously the more of them there are, the more potential infections that we avert.”The app is really only meant to notify people if they've been exposed to the coronavirus. It's not meant to eliminate traditional contact tracing.“Traditional contact tracing is still important. It is still required. It's really how we get in touch with people to determine if they have questions, if they have prevention activities that they need to figure out,” said Stover.Another thing about the app is that it does not use location data. Virginia's health department says there's really no need for it, especially because that type of data doesn't really show the distance between people.Right now, the app can only be used in Virginia, but the state of North Dakota has said the app will be available for use there soon. 1680

Heavy rain caused a central Texas river to rise to a near-record level in about a day, leading to a bridge collapse, flooded homes and evacuations. The Llano River rose to nearly 40 feet Tuesday in the city of Llano -- about 35 feet higher than it was just 24 hours earlier before -- thanks to 8 to 10 inches of rain that fell in the area over the past two days, the National Weather Service said.A few miles away, in Kingsland, the swollen river rushed against the top of the RM 2900 bridge for hours, eventually causing it to collapse, video from CNN affiliate KEYE showed. No one appeared to be on the bridge, and no injuries were immediately reported.Video from Darlene Walthall also showed the river washing over the span before the collapse. The Llano County Office of Emergency Management ordered people living within a quarter mile of the river to evacuate Tuesday morning. The Llano River meets the Colorado River in Kingsland. Houses near the Colorado were flooded, resident Terri Kleen said. Video that she posted to Instagram showed water rising to the top of boat dock structures.Law enforcement officers were helping people from flooded areas, she said.In nearby Marble Falls, Dale Heath recorded video of a car stuck in rushing water from a swollen Backbone Creek, a Colorado River tributary. The flooded communities are about a 90-minute drive northwest of Austin. The Llano River's crest of 39.91 feet in Llano was just below the record high of 41.5 feet there in June 1935.The river is expected to recede through Tuesday afternoon, but should stay in the major flood stage -- over 23 feet -- through Wednesday morning. 1654

Hard seltzers pair well with pizza, and for one day only, a nationwide pizza chain will be serving hard seltzer in their pizza. Blaze Pizza is offering a White Claw-infused crust on Thursday, June 18 at more than 50 locations. (See below for full list)Mango White Claw will be added to Blaze's signature dough recipe to create the one-of-a-kind crust at no extra cost, that can be topped with any combination of toppings.“Like our pizzas, White Claw is crafted with simple and clean ingredients, and the brand has an irreverent attitude. While sipping on a Mango White Claw, I thought, ‘Why not make dough with this instead of filtered water?’” read a statement from Blaze Pizza executive chef Brad Kent. The White Claw-infused crust is only available in-restaurant, it will not be available for online or app orders, according to Blaze.White Claw has quickly risen in popularity since it was launched in 2016, leading a growing hard seltzer market, according to Nielsen data. Hard seltzer sales at liquor and grocery stores increased more than 300% between 2018 and 2019.Last fall, the company, Mark Anthony Brands, faced a shortage to meet the growing demand. “White Claw has accelerated faster than anyone could have predicted,” Sanjiv Gajiwala, White Claw's senior vice president told CNN Business at the time.Blaze Pizza locations serving Mango White Claw-infused crust:Albany, NY - Western Ave.Alhambra, CA - GarfieldAmes, IA - ISUAmmon, ID - Sandcreek CommonsArcadia, CA - W Naomi Ave.Azusa, CA - Alosta Ave.Boca Raton, FLBrea, CA - Imperial HwyBurbank, CA - Burbank EmpireChicago, IL - BelmontChicago, IL - Loyola UniversityChicago, IL - OntarioChula Vista, CA - Otay Ranch Town CenterClaremont, CA - Indian HillDavie, FLDavis, CA - F StreetDes Moines, IA- MLK Jr PkwyDurham, NC - McFarlandEl Paso, TX - Fort BlissEncinitas, CA - El Camino RealFort Lauderdale, FL - Cypress CreekFullerton, CA - Orangefair MallGarner, NC - Cabela Dr.Glendale, CA - Glendale GalleriaGlendora, CA - Lone Hill Ave.Gold River, CA - Golden Center LnHolly Springs, NC- Grand Hill PlHollywood, CA - Sunset Vine TowerHuntington Beach, CA - GoldenwestIrvine, CA - UCIJacksonville, NC - Gateway MarketplaceJupiter, FL - Sims Creek PlazaLa Verne, CA - Foothill Blvd.Monrovia, CA - Foothill BlvdMorrisville, NC - Market Center DrNiles, ILNorth Hollywood, CA - Victory Blvd.Orange, CA - Glassell StOrange, CA - Tustin St.Palm Beach Gardens, FLPanorama City, CA - Van Nuys Blvd.Pasadena, CA - Colorado BlvdPasadena, CA - N. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — David Burkard, a 28-year-old Emergency Room doctor at Spectrum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is currently working on his residency, but about two weeks ago he was a patient at the same hospital, due to COVID-19.“I woke up on a Thursday morning, just not really feeling like myself. I had a fever, cough, short of breath, fatigue, all the classic symptoms”, he explained. But Burkard admits, as someone who runs five days a week with no underlying health concerns, he wasn’t real concerned about how it would affect him. “I am a young healthy guy. Probably prior to getting it, I probably at one point said, ‘I hope I can just get it and get it over with,' because I didn’t think it would hit me,” Burkard added.Nearly a week of not feeling well, Burkard thought he was getting better, but his symptoms quickly took a turn for the worse he explains. "On day six, someone dropped a package off on my door and I got up out of bed and went and picked it up. And it’s about ten steps to my door, and I bent over and picked up the package and was like, ‘Oh, that’s not normal.’” A couple of days later, he went to his own workplace, the Spectrum Health Emergency Room, due to his dropping oxygen levels, which went from the high 90s to the low 80s. “That’s when you start to worry that like, your organs, your liver, kidney, brain, heart start to not get enough oxygen,” he said. After three days in the hospital and receiving supplemental oxygen, convalescent plasma and Remdesivir, Burkard turned the corner and was released to go home.He now thinks this experience will make him an even more compassionate doctor once he’s allowed to return to the work that he loves. “I think it definitely changes the way I practice medicine, going into those conversations in the future. The 75-year-old man who says goodbye to his 75-year-old wife before we put a breathing tube in, or the 50-year-old man who has to zoom with his family because he’s going downhill quickly. Those are experiences that we, as emergency medicine physicians, deal with every day. I mean, my experience was not the same, I did not have to get a breathing tube. Another takeaway is just the loneliness that I felt when I was admitted to the hospital and being able to relate to patients now on that level is something that’s important to me," Burkard explained. He is now urging everyone to take this virus seriously as we head into a holiday season where we usually gather with family and friends. This story originally reported by Derek Francis on FOX17online.com 2553
