SHIJIAZHUANG, Sept.10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Friday, the nation's Teachers' Day, called on teachers to dedicate themselves to rural education, improving teaching standards and contributing to the modernization of the country's education program.Wen made those remarks during a visit to a middle school in Xinglong County of north China's Hebei Province, which is about 135 km from Beijing.Teachers play a key role in primary education, which lays the foundation for a country's development, Wen said, adding that Chinese teachers had made contributions to the country's education cause and modernization drive through hard work and selfless devotion.Wen stressed it was important to improve rural education as it is a matter concerning the long-term development of rural areas and the improvement of people's skills.Persistent efforts would be made to ensure students in rural areas have universal access to schooling and modern education, he said.In 2007, China decided to waive tuition fees for students training to become teachers at six top teaching universities in Beijing, Shanghai, Changchun, Wuhan, Xi'an and Chongqing. To be eligible for free tuition, the student must agree to work at a primary or middle school for at least ten years after graduation and spend the first two years in a rural school. The first group of students who enrolled under the tuition-free program are scheduled to graduate next summer.Eight students from the Beijing Normal University who are in the program joined Wen in his visit to the rural school Friday.Wen urged the students from the university to develop a better understanding of China's rural area, contribute to rural education and help build their hometowns into better places after graduation. The premier asked them to make rural education their career and prepare themselves for hardships and challenges. He said the government would continue its support to the program of tuition-free education for normal school teachers and provide them with opportunities of receiving further education and grant favorable policies in employment.

BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) - Members from friendship associations of China and Japan on Friday voiced their hope for people-to-people exchanges to help improve strained China-Japan relations after recent disputes. The proposal was launched at a conference held in the Great Hall of the People to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Japan-China Friendship Association (JCFA), a friendly group established on Oct. 1, 1950 with the view to promoting mutual understanding and cooperation between the two peoples and promote bilateral exchanges and trade."Friendly groups should take the 60th anniversary as a new starting point to deepen friendly exchanges between the two countries, especially between the youth, and contribute to the China-Japan strategic relationship of reciprocity," said President of the China-Japan Friendship Association (CJFA) Song Jian. He also spoke highly of the contribution made by the JCFA for the development of China-Japan relations.People-to-people exchanges have always played an important role in the history of bilateral relations. It not only helped the two countries normalize ties but also improve the bilateral relations when they were strained by some issues such as the visits paid by former Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro to the Yasukuni Shrine.Regarding the recent friction between the two countries caused by a ship collision, people-to-people exchanges were expected to play a role again. Two Japanese Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler collided on Sept. 7 in the waters off the Diaoyu Islands. Japan's subsequent illegal detention of the Chinese trawler and crew members resulted in strong protests from the Chinese government and public. China then halted bilateral exchanges at and above provincial and ministerial levels. The crew and the boat were released after the Chinese side took some countermeasures."China and Japan are neighboring countries separated by only a thin strip of water. People of the two countries boast a 2000-year history of friendly exchanges. The good-neighboring relationship between China and Japan is not only in the fundamental interests of the two peoples, but also conducive to the peace, stability and prosperity of the region and the world at large," Song said.He added that the history of the 20th century proved that it is in the fundamental interests of the two peoples to maintain peaceful coexistence, friendship lasting for generations, reciprocal cooperation and common development."It is a long-term and hard task to promote the development of the China-Japan friendship, and it needs the efforts from both sides," Song said. For his part, JCFA's vice chairman Shoichi Ide also pledged to make efforts to deepen mutual understanding between the two countries.Japan and China are facing a new situation to further deepen the bilateral strategic relations. The JCFA will take the 60th anniversary as an opportunity to actively carry out exchange activities and promote friendship between the two countries, he said.At the gathering, 30 people from the JCFA who have made remarkable contributions for the China-Japan friendship were awarded.Officials from the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Chinese governmental departments and the two friendly associations also attended the conference.

BEIJING, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official Zhou Yongkang on Tuesday concluded a visit to India that helped promote development of mutual trust and bilateral cooperation between the two Asian nations.Zhou, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and also secretary of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Central Committee, met Monday with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi, India's capital.During the meeting, Zhou said strengthening political mutual trust with India was the key to deeper cooperation with the country and that the leaders of the two countries should often exchange views in great depth and with great frankness on major issues of mutual concern.Zhou said China and India had a combined population of 2.5 billion and there existed a great space for developing cooperation in the economy and trade, and people-to-people and cultural exchanges. He said both China and India faced the heavy task of developing their own economy, improving people's living standards and safeguarding social stability.Zhou said, while China was making its 12th five-year plan for socioeconomic development in the 2011-2015 period and India making its 11th five-year plan, China wished to increase political trust with India, expand cooperation of mutual benefit, and deepen the strategic cooperative partnership with India.Prime Minister Singh said the friendly relations between India and China played an extremely important role in promoting peace, stability and development in Asia and even in the whole world.Zhou also met on Monday with ruling Indian National Congress party President Sonia Gandhi and party General Secretary Rahul Gandhi.During the meeting, Zhou said the development of China and India provided opportunities rather than posed challenges to each other. Both China and India believed the world was big enough to accommodate the common development of China and India, Zhou said, adding the Chinese side was happy for every achievement that India made in its development. As for the China-India trade, which is expected to reach 60 billion U.S. dollars this year, Zhou said there was still great potential for the two big emerging powers to tap.He hoped both sides could deepen the strategic cooperative partnership further, strengthen practical cooperation in various fields, and increase personnel exchanges at different levels.Sonia Gandhi said India had always paid great attention to China's development and welcomed the improvement in the living standard of the Chinese people. She said India's and China's development had speeded up the recovery of the world economy in the face of the international financial crisis and she hoped both sides could strengthen coordination and cooperation further and tackle various global issues in a better way and maintain the favorable momentum of development.Zhou also met with Indian Minister of External Affairs S. M. Krishna, the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (Indian People's Party) Nitin Gadkari and leaders of three left-wing parties on Monday.During a seminar on China-India ties on Monday, Zhou asked for joint efforts to promote China-India relations."It is an inevitable trend of history to consolidate and develop the peace and friendship between China and India," Zhou said."We should extract nutrition and wisdom from history to persist in maintaining peace, friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation, and to be good neighbors, good friends and good partners forever," he said.He made a five-point proposal on the further development of China-India relations, including promoting political mutual trust, expanding cooperation in economics and trade, boosting friendly exchanges, strengthening international cooperation, and promoting friendly consultation. Before wrapping up his three-day visit, Zhou on Tuesday visited India's IT bellwether Infosys Technologies in Bangalore, known as the Silicon Valley of India.
