TAMPA, Fla. -- A commercial about child hunger inspired Kennedy McCormick to take action when she just 7 years old.“I felt really bad for the children, so I wanted to do something to help,” said McCormick, now 14.For her birthday that year, she wanted to collect food instead of getting presents.“So we had a party and that’s exactly what happened. Everybody brought food,” said her father, Kelvin.Kennedy has carried on that tradition every year, teaming up with Feeding Tampa Bay to make sure the donations get to those in need.“The more I’ve done it. The more donations I’ve gotten over the years,” said Kennedy. This year with the pandemic, she held a virtual fundraiser, raising about ,000.All her hard work got noticed by General Mills and they surprised her with a donation like she’s never seen before: two truckloads of Cheerios. That’s 48,000 boxes.“I was extra surprised when I saw the truck drive by because I thought it was only going to be the cereal over there and then there was a truck. And I was like oh my gosh there’s so much cereal,” said Kennedy.“She’s a wonderful young lady all around and so this just adds to our ability to participate in something that she enjoys,” said her mother, Joy.Feeding Tampa Bay says they’ll be sending out all these boxes of cereal throughout the community has part of the two million meals they deliver each week. For more information on Feeding Tampa Bay’s Cereal for Summer program, you can click here for more information.Kennedy is still collecting donations on her Facebook recital page at Facebook.com/kjmacgirls.She is also already planning for her party next year with one change, guests will be able to bring cereal and cash. This story was originally published by Erik Waxler at WFTS. 1755

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Gov. Ron DeSantis is proposing controversial legislation that would expand Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law that would allow for the use of force against protesters and looters. The expansion of the law includes language that would grant business owners protection in response to criminal acts during protests, like looting. The legislation would also make blocking traffic during a protest a third-degree felony. Drivers who say they accidentally killed or injured protesters who block traffic would get immunity.Critics of the bill say it could provoke vigilantism and provide justification for killing people over property crimes. The governor's draft proposal would also enhance criminal penalties for people involved in assemblies, which become violent or disorderly.Expanding "Stand Your Ground" is part of a draft legislation proposal to lawmakers ahead of the 2020 sessions, which begins next week. The governor first floated the expanded legislation during a news conference in December. This story was originally published by Victoria Lewis on WPTV in Palm Beach, Florida. 1106

SUN CITY CENTER, Fla. — A Hillsborough County grandmother is exclusively telling Scripps station WFTS in Tampa about her incredible story of survival. "It was just shocking my whole entire insides, like my whole entire body," said JoAnne Cyr. Cyr was draining water outside the back patio of her Sun City Center home when Tuesday's storms rolled in.  373

Students are demanding change after the deadly Florida High School shooting. On Monday, a group of teens from Maryland held a lie-in near the White House to stand with the victims of last week's mass shooting. The group, called Teens for Gun Reform, held the lie-in at 12:15 p.m. between the White House and Lafayette Park. Demonstrators lied on the ground for three minutes to symbolize how long it took the suspected gunman to buy the AR 15 rifle used in the attack. Many students who survived the shooting are now speaking out against gun violence. They are calling for a nationwide student and teacher walkout on March 14 to demand tougher gun laws. There are also talks of an anti-gun violence demonstration in Washington, D.C. and other cities across the country on March 24."My message for the people in office is you're either with us or against us. We are losing our lives while the adults are playing around," said Cameron Kasky, a Marjory Stoneman Douglas high student who survived last week's shooting.  1050

Students in at the Arizona College Prepatory Academy will walk out of class Wednesday to show their support for the Second Amendment. The event is called Stand for the Second and is happening in at least 39 other states across the U.S.The walkout comes after students around the country staged a walkout aimed at stopping gun violence and honoring the students killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. In February, protesters nationwide left their classrooms and remained outside for 17 minutes to honor the 17 people gunned down. Will Riley, an 18 year old from New Mexico, started this event to support the lives saved by firearms.“Every year an estimated 1.5 million Americans use a firearm to defend themselves,” Riley said. “During a 16-minute walkout, that breaks down to 91 American lives saved during the walkout. We want Americans to know that firearms are overwhelmingly used for good in our country.”The participating students here in Tucson plan to walk out at 10 a.m. 1044
