SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors said the officer-involved-shooting in the South Crest area of San Diego, all started with a machete attack between acquaintances. It was a frightening scene on Boston Avenue Wednesday afternoon. A man was seen lying on the street, clutching his bloody head. Neighbors said he was beaten over the head with a machete. According to San Diego Police, the first 911 call came in at around 5:15 pm.RELATED: Police investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in Southcrest10News spoke to a man who lives at the home where the attack happened. He said the attacker is his sister's boyfriend. He said the boyfriend came over to the house and got into an argument with a family friend over a dog chain. The boyfriend then grabbed a machete and began striking the victim over the head, then to the rest of his body. First responders soon took the victim to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.After the attack, witnesses said they saw the attacker run westbound on Boston Ave., then north onto 40th street. That is where a San Diego Police officer confronted him. The officer first fired a taser to try to mitigate the situation. However, the department spokesperson said the taser was deemed "ineffective." The officer then shot the attacker at least once. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.Those who know the machete-wielding man said he is usually a nice person. But he had been acting up lately. Neighbors said they saw him swinging around a bat a day before the attack. While they knew he had violent tendencies, no one thought it would escalate to this level.  1631

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than one million of the 1.95 million mail-in ballots sent to San Diego registered voters have been returned, according to the county.The County Registrar of Voters said Friday they've received more than a million mail-in ballots back with four days left until Election Day.The Registrar said at the same time before the 2016 Presidential election, the county had only received 442,802 ballots back.Saturday, the county opened polling locations from Saturday, Oct. 31 through Monday, Nov. 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All locations will be open again on Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.Residents can locate their polling place online here. Voters can also check the back of their sample ballots and voter information pamphlets for assigned polling places.Anyone casting their ballot in person will be required to wear a face covering and to maintain physical distance at polling locations.Poll workers will have a face mask for anyone who forgets to bring on. Those unable or unwilling to wear a mask will be assisted outside to vote.The Registrar also reminds voters that campaigning or electioneering, which includes the visible display or audibly advocating for a candidate or measure, within 100 feet of a polling place or mail ballot drop-off location is prohibited. 1294

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On this holiday, some extra thanks for a Clairemont family, months after an expectant mother was placed on a ventilator from COVID-19."This Thanksgiving, I’m thankful to be here with my family," said Ashley Duque.That family includes Ashley, her husband Diego, their daughter Anna, 3, and the newest addition, three-month-old Lucas."He came out our miracle baby," said Ashley.The miracle emerged from a pandemic. In March, 17 weeks into her pregnancy, Ashley was hospitalized with coronavirus, before being placed on a ventilator for five days."It was very, very scary," said Ashley.She spoke to ABC 10News from her hospital bed while recovering. Ashley was discharged after more than two weeks, but she would be back for nine different surgeries from complications from the COVID-19 treatment.Most of the surgeries involved removing scar tissue in her throat caused by her time on the ventilator.Then in August, Ashley was back in the hospital, as she went into labor three weeks early."I was nervous and scared," said Ashley.Despite her COVID battle and her other health issues, Lucas Duque was born August 25, weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces. He was healthy."We’re just very blessed that nothing happened to him," said Ashley.On this Thanksgiving holiday, there is a mix of emotions. Ashley is still having issues with the scar tissue, but Ashley and Diego are feeling an overwhelming feeling of gratitude."In a flip of coin, anything can happen. Just very grateful to have my family with me. They are my world," said Diego."Learned to cherish every moment. Definitely our most grateful Thanksgiving ever," said Ashley. 1645

Just ask Lemon Grove resident Tiffany Klein, who had to explain to her 3-year-old son Nicholas, why the sky looked so smokey and gloomy over the last week."Ash was falling and the sky was dark, which was odd. So Nicholas asked me what was going on, he didn't quite understand."And when Tiffany told her son about the dangerous fires burning near Alpine, his response was a bit surprising for a young child."He asked if people were getting hurt," said Tiffany. "I told him, as of that time, that no one had gotten hurt, but some people had lost their homes. So he asked me if he could raise money by doing a lemonade stand."Despite being 3-years-old, Nicholas wanted to lend a hand, even if he wasn't quite sure what was going on."I wanted to help the people that lost their homes,"said Nicholas.And how could any parent say no to such a great request."I was mind blown. He said yes mommy, I want to help them find their homes, because he assumed they were lost."So the family went to work building a lemonade stand, and squeezing their own lemons."He had to build his own lemonade stand, and he went out and picked lemons from a lemon tree."By selling lemonade, he hoped to raise 7 dollars."Seven dollars is huge to him and i said OK, let's try to get that goal."Nicholas easily raised the 7 dollars, and a whole lot more."He doesn't understand what he did yet," says his mom. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Murder during rape is a special circumstance, meaning no bail for the man accused of killing an elderly woman in her Normal Heights home in 1987.Kevin Ford, 62, didn’t have much to say in court Tuesday, charged with the murder and rape of 79-year-old Grace Hayden. Some advances in technology and persistent police work helping make today happen after three decades.The video remains just as chilling today as it was 31 years ago. Hayden's body was wheeled out of her home. Her neighbor told 10News reporter Steve Fiorina back then, that she was a friendly neighbor."She was loveable, friendly, never bothered, as far as I know, anyone," the neighbor said."Never went out because she was something like handicapped. She was a nice lady," another neighbor said.The case went cold until a single fingerprint found on Hayden’s stove. And some hard work led investigators to an arrest in North Carolina.San Diego DA investigator Tony Johnson was reviewing the unsolved case when he found that fingerprint. He submitted it to a national database and got a hit from a 20-15 warrant out of North Carolina.Three years ago he talked with KPBS saying, “a case goes cold primarily when the initial team that’s investigating the case has run out of leads.”Ford was extradited to San Diego. Tuesday, he was arraigned before a judge. A public defender said ford denies all charges.Ford is due back in court on Aug. 7. 1460
