SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The commissioner of the Pac-12 says 15-minute testing technology from a San Diego company could be the “game-changer” needed to restart competition in the conference before the end of the year.The Pac-12 is considering restarting college football as early as mid- to late-November, according to ESPN, as long as it can secure approvals from state and county lawmakers in California and Oregon.In some conferences, college football is entering its third week, but Pac-12 schools like USC and UCLA are still in workout mode after the conference voted last month to postpone all sports until 2021 at the earliest.League officials are now revisiting that decision and considering an earlier timeline after signing an agreement with San Diego-based Quidel Corporation to provide rapid antigen testing for all athletes, including daily tests for high-contact sports like football.“The access to rapid result testing that we can implement on even a daily basis with some sports with high contact will be a real game changer for us,” Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said after touring Quidel’s facility this month.Most nasal swab tests are genetic tests, or PCR tests, which seek out the genetic code buried inside the virus’ protein shell. These tests are considered the industry standard, but they require processing in a lab to convert RNA into enough readable strands of DNA. Results can sometimes take days.Quidel’s nasal swab test is what’s called an antigen test, which looks for parts of the virus’ protein shell. It can be read by machines at each university in about 15 minutes.“No one's going to be spreading the virus because no one will be engaging in practice or competition with the virus,” Scott said.That’s the hope at least, but the partnership with the Pac-12 will be an important test for Quidel’s diagnostic product.Quidel was the first company to get a rapid antigen test on the market, securing an emergency use authorization in May. But there were questions about the accuracy of the test compared to PCR tests in the small sample size provided by the company.In July, Quidel published more data showing its antigen tests matched up with PCR tests 96.7% of the time when a positive was detected. But those results were only among individuals who were actually showing symptoms.“The question that people have is in the asymptomatic population, will the data look similar?” said Quidel CEO Doug Bryant in an interview.Bryant said the company has unpublished data that will be forwarded to the FDA showing “very similar” relative accuracy to PCR tests in asymptomatic individuals, but he said the goal of the partnership with the Pac-12 is to investigate the tests even further.“We want to know that the tests we’re doing are appropriate for use in the asymptomatic population. And we need to demonstrate that, to not only the scientific community but to the public at large,” Bryant said.The testing program with the Pac-12 will essentially be a large clinical trial to find out if rapid testing of athletes can prevent spread, backed by the muscle at some of the premiere research universities.The Pac-12 is hoping the testing program will convince lawmakers to ease restrictions on college athletics, particularly in California.Although the NFL played a game at the new SoFI Stadium in Inglewood last weekend, nearby USC cannot gather in groups of more than 12 players.There are now four antigen tests on the market. Come January 30, the mall will roll out its 'secured parking plan' aimed at keeping non-shoppers from parking on the property.Customers can park free for the first two hours and then pay per additional hour, with a daily maximum of . While the parking stations have been in place for months, some mall employees say they were blindsided to learn they too might have to pay for parking. Mall officials say employers have the option of purchasing parking passes for employees. If not purchased by the employer, individual employees may purchase the passes themselves.“It’s another bill to put on top of the rest," said one employee, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of being fired. His employer will not be purchasing parking passes for employees. The anonymous employee says they were told daily passes will cost and monthly passes will cost .“Personally it’s 0 out of my budget each year to go to work, and that’s on top of car payment and insurance," said the employee.He's concerned for mall employees who only make minimum wage and cannot afford the extra cost. While the mall is offering subsidized public transit passes, the concerned employee says that's not an option for everyone. He wishes there had been more transparency about the policy in the months leading up to January 30 roll-out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The final panel of a 14-mile stretch of the Primary Border Wall project was installed Friday, marking a turning point for U.S. Border Patrol, according to Border Patrol officials.Now there is more updated fencing in place compared to aging infrastructure. The stretch of new fencing replaced stamped steel, that's easy to climb, originally installed in the 1990's.The 18-30-foot steel bollard stretches a quarter of a mile from the ocean, to Otay Mountain. The old wall was breached more than 1,700 times, according to Border Patrol officials.RELATED: Funds earmarked for defense can be used for border wall, Supreme Court rules"Any upgrade we can get we'll take, this wall's been around for 30 years," Border Patrol Public Affairs Officer Theron Francisco said.The transparent feature of the new wall, vital for Border Patrol agents. Fiscal year to date, 149 incidents were reported, compared to 72 last year.Last April migrants hurled rocks at San Diego Border Patrol officers, shattering their Jeep's window. With that, it means less agents have to field a certain area," Francisco said. He said that means an area with seven agents could go down to two or three.As for who paid for the wall, each Border Patrol agent said the Trump administration. "So this would be Trump's wall, it was financed in fiscal year 2017, so it's starting under his administration and will wrap up under his administration," Francisco said.Border patrol is working on two other projects, one in Tecate that's a four mile primary fence and another that's stretches from the ocean to Otay Mountain as a secondary wall. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The family of a beloved South Bay fruit vendor are outraged after an unidentified white female who they say has been hurling racial slurs towards the Latino man allegedly threatened acts of violence against him and his wife on Wednesday.The woman has reportedly been harassing the vendor over the last several weeks. The woman escalated her verbal abuse to physical threats and allegedly brought someone along with her described as being "intimidating," the family says.A Facebook live stream from a local business owner capturing himself reporting the incident to two San Diego County Sheriff's deputies says the vendor was confronted six or seven times throughout the day. In the video, the vendor is heard telling deputies that the woman threatened to "beat" him and his wife."Come and support him; we can't let this continue," Victor Lopez says in his broadcast.The 51-year-old vendor, known by many South Bay locals as the “Mango Man,” and his wife have been selling cases of fresh produce in Bonita out of his truck. His family says it’s a job he's been doing for over a decade to help supplement his income."He's always been really good with the people, and people always supported him," says Cony Plata, the vendor's daughter-in-law.Cony describes her in-laws, Gilberto and Yolanda, as hardworking and kind people "just trying to make ends meet."Like many San Diegans scrambling to manage the pandemic, Gilberto is out of work. He stresses over paying bills and keeping his family under a roof.Gilberto, who is often seen sporting a baseball cap emblazoned with an American flag and bald eagle, first came under attack by a small group of people several weeks ago. In the last few days, the group ratcheted up their racist insults with threats of violence, according to Cony.Cony says her father-in-law stays positive for the family, but the xenophobia and verbal ambushing are adding unnecessary pressure."Lately, it's been harder for them because they get all these threats and harassment," says Cony. "They said they're going to beat them up … this lady said she's going to bring people.”Gilberto, a soft-spoken man with an unassuming disposition, tells his family he's never experienced hatred of this kind."It's making them more nervous and scared because they don't know if these people are actually going to do something to them," she says.Fears for his family's safety are made worse by the nagging feeling that people may be following Gilberto to his home. Cony says that his vehicle was broken into recently, and that a rope used to tie down his fruit crates was stolen out of his truck.The rope has “never gone missing before until these incidences started happening," she says.Videos, photos, and stories of these confrontations against the Mango Man have been quietly surfacing on social media over the last month. La Toya Ventura was one of the first people to witness the confrontations. On Aug. 5, Ventura posted a 3-minute video recorded by her daughter to a community Facebook page purporting to show an older white female harassing the vendor."She’s still there after calling the police & threatening to call BP on him. If you’re in the area please stop by & buy a box. It’s ," she wrote in the video's caption.Word of the harassment spread quickly and loudly this week, garnering interest from numerous locals and business leaders pledging support for Gilberto.Lopez is one of those supporters. He visited the fruit stand a week ago and witnessed the verbal threats on Gilberto and his wife. Lopez snapped photos and shared them on social media which moved the community into action."That same member who took photos happens to be a local restaurant owner, and bought 50 boxes of mangos! Mango Man sold out again!," wrote one Facebook user.The outpouring of support has led to a fan page, and locals are posting photos with the Mango Man and his wife. Images show customers donning face coverings and posing with cases of fruit, uniformed servicemembers holding up their purchases, and families standing guard at his stand.Photos are filling South Bay social pages daily and his produce is selling out everyday thanks in large part to the community's support."This kind of action demonstrates the human quality of the inhabitants of this community," reads one photo gallery caption on Facebook. "It is encouraging to know that there are more people who decide to support those who need it and generate common good by helping each other."Cony and her husband are in Las Vegas managing their own struggle, she says. For her and her husband, it’s hard to see what’s happening to their family hundreds of miles away. Until she can get time off from work, she appreciates the support she sees posted on social media."Thank you for being there and letting it be known they're not alone." 4848
