PIKELOT ISLAND – Like out of a movie, three missing mariners were rescued from a deserted island in the Pacific after writing “SOS” in the sand.Authorities in the U.S. and Australia say the three men departed Puluwat Atoll on a 23-foot skiff last Thursday, intending to travel 21 nautical miles to Pulap, Chuuk.However, they never made it to their destination and were reported missing, according to the Anderson Air Force Base, Guam. A rescue mission was then launched.“Joint Rescue Sub-Center Guam received notification of an overdue skiff last seen in the vicinity of Chuuk and requested our assistance,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Shaun McRoberts, 506th Air Expeditionary Aerial Refueling Squadron assistant director of operations. “Once notified, we began immediately working a plan to launch crews to locate the missing vessel.”After almost three hours into their mission and flying at about 1,500 feet, rescue crews located the mariners on the tiny, uninhabited island of Pikelot, Yap.“We were toward the end of our search pattern,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Jason Palmeira-Yen. “We turned to avoid some rain showers and that’s when we looked down and saw an island, so we decide to check it out and that’s when we saw SOS and a boat right next to it on the beach. From there we called in the Australian Navy because they had two helicopters nearby that could assist and land on the island.”Early in the morning on Monday, authorities say a small boat crew was launched and rescued the mariners.The sailors told officials that they ran off course while traveling and eventually ran out of gas, according to the Australian Navy. 1643

p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Helvetica}span.s1 {font-kerning: none}San Diego law enforcement officers are tapping into a nationwide database that uses a bullet's ‘fingerprint' to track crimes.The distinct markings left on a shell casing after it's fired provide an image that can be traced back to the gun from which the bullet was shot.There's an Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives technology called National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, or NIBIN.The national digital database houses 3.3 million images of casings left at crime scenes all over the country.San Diego County, state and federal agencies can enter a casing and find out within 24 hours if there's a match in the system."We're catching the fingerprint from the firearm," said ATF Intelligence Specialist Tom Chimileski.If they get a hit, those identical spent shell casings have linked two different crimes to the same gun.ATF Special Agent Jeff Rice, who works with local police and Sheriff's units in San Diego County, calls the sharing of ballistic information "a game changer."Rice works with Escondido Police Gang Unit Detective Nicholas Rodelo on gun crime cases. They took 10News Anchor Kimberly Hunt to the scene of a March 2016 murder case in Escondido.Surveillance video caught the car in an alley off Escondido Blvd. creeping toward the street, as the shooter stalked a rival gang member.After the shooter got out of his car and gunned down the man in the middle of a busy street, there were 12 shell casings left at the scene.The casings were collected and put into the NIBIN system.In the 24-hour window before the digital search could reveal a lead, the pair got a tip on where the gun could be. They recovered it and found the serial number was obliterated.Rice and Rodelo went to San Diego Sheriff's Department Criminologist Scott Hoopes for his expertise in serial restoration.Hoopes told 10News the metal underneath the serial number still reacts to certain acids. Even though it's completely smooth on the surface, Hoopes can sometimes manipulate the acid reactions and bring the number back. That's what Hoopes did with the gun.These technologies are putting a bull's eye on the bad guys. The NIBIN system's images have led to 110,000 hits giving investigators a wealth of knowledge from seemingly unrelated crimes, sometimes from the other side of the country, now connected by a firearm."Jurisdictions can't talk to each other but within our NIBIN system we're able to figure that out," said ATF Special Agent Jeff Rice.These hits allow investigators to get surveillance video, the makes of cars, license plates, or other pieces of evidence from one scene and use it in the other cases involving that same gun.That gets law enforcement much closer to finding the shooter and making the arrest.  See Kimberly Hunt's full report: 2873

On Friday, families are still grieving and plan to honor the somber milestone.The fast-food restaurant sits on the corner of Del Sol and Picador Boulevards. Witnesses say the man tried to use counterfeit bills to buy food and was refused.He killed Maribel Merino-Iba?ez, 28, and severely injured Mario Rojas, who is a grandfather.Friday, a drawing of Maribel's ghost above wilted flowers showed her loved ones still feel the emptiness.Rojas barely escaped that night and is still going back to the hospital."I still have more surgeries coming in, I think probably next month," Rojas said over the phone.He was shot in the arm and the stomach, which has led to back complications. Last December, when he came home from the hospital, he described how difficult his recovery has been: "He destroyed my life, my dreams everything."Rojas is in a similar state a year later, using a walker to get around and unable to work."My wife has to help me take a shower, and help me with the clothes, to change my clothes and everything," he said sadly.The restaurant paying 20 hours a week of worker's compensation, not nearly enough to pay mounting medical bills and rent."I have a lot of depression right now," Rojas said.His wife launched a GoFundMe page to help them through.
