(KGTV) -- Charles Butler visits homes in San Diego, but he is not trying to sell anything. Butler is a code compliance officer for San Diego Fire-Rescue and makes sure brush surrounding homes is not out of control. “It’s the hillside we’re really concerned about, the canyon rim location,” Butler said. It is Wildfire Awareness Week in California. Assistant Fire Marshal Eddie Villavicencio said approximately 40,500 homes in San Diego are canyon rim properties, next to native or naturalized vegetation. If they don’t comply, they can face a second violation. By the third time, the property owner could be fined 0 and ultimately, forced abatement meaning the City will clean up your home. Fortunately, it usually does not have to go that far. “People are more proactive and more willing to create that proper defensible space,” Villavicencio said. However, there are challenges including a lack of staffing. Villavicencio said they do not visit as many homes as they would like to per year. That is all the more reason to do your part. “That’s the intent of the defensible space. It’s keeping small fires small, it’s giving fire operations time to respond to the fire and the space to fight the fire,” Villavicencio said. 2472

(KGTV) - A proposed bill moving through California's legislature would — hopefully — eliminate fears of an awful driver's license photo.SB-1407 would allow drivers to have the ultimate say in their license photo. The bill would let drivers take up to three pictures at the Department of Motor Vehicles and then choose which one they like best.Drivers would also be allowed to have their photo taken outside of the DMV by a pre-approved photography center.RELATED: California DMVs now taking applications for Real ID driver's licenses, identification cardsWhile all of this sounds great for drivers who loathe their license photo, it could come at a cost. The bill says there would be an extra fee for each additional photo but didn't specify how much. (KGTV) - An earthquake struck northern Mexico’s Baja California peninsula Monday, causing tremors felt in San Diego County.The 4.8 quake was located near Alberto Oviedo Mota at 12:18 p.m.The initial quake was followed by a 3.3 aftershock in the same area seven minutes later.Alberto Oviedo Mota is roughly 160 miles from San Diego. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the shaking in San Diego County was in the II-III or IV categories, meaning weak to light. The strongest shaking reported in the U.S. was in El Centro, which was considered moderate.There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries. 626

(KGTV) -- A San Diego woman’s mother is missing following a solo trip to Zion National Park in Utah, according to CNN.Holly Courtier hasn’t been seen or heard from since October 6 when she embarked on the trip.Courtier was dropped off at the park by a private shuttle bus and scheduled to be picked up the same day, but never returned, KABC reports.Courtier’s daughter Kailey Chambers told the station her mother is an experienced hiker.
