SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County health officials say 12 new flu-related deaths have been recorded in the last week, as cases also trend upward.The new influenza deaths included a 34-year-old East County woman with an underlying medical condition who died from influenza A, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency. This season, there have been 32 deaths in the county related to the flu, compared to 24 deaths at this time last season.The county says 2,292 local lab-confirmed cases were also reported last week. In comparison, only 487 confirmed cases were reported during the same week last year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City Councilman Scott Sherman's newly announced candidacy will alter the race to become San Diego's next mayor.Sherman, termed out from City Council, is the first household Republican to run to lead America's eighth largest city. Sherman announced he would run just before the Dec. 6 deadline to file for the March 2020 primary. Current Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a Republican, is termed out. In an interview, Sherman said he did not want the mayoral debates to be dominated by two big-name Democrats: State Assemblyman Todd Gloria and City Council President Pro-Tem Barbara Bry. "There's a very good chance that he will get in the runoff."The top two vote-getters, regardless of party affiliation, will move on to the November primary. In September, a 10News-Union-Tribune scientific poll showed Gloria leading Bry by a two-to-one margin, with 31 percent of voters supporting Gloria, and 15 percent supporting Bry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Bystanders captured video of a truck involved in a crash near San Diego International Airport on Saturday speeding away from the scene.The video begins moments after a three-car crash on N. Harbor Drive at Lee Court around 9:30 a.m. A white truck reportedly slammed into the back of a Ford F-350 and sideswiped a sedan, according to the driver of the sedan, Kathleen Gleason. The driver of the white truck is then seen speeding away, creating a cloud of white smoke, with the driver-side front tire bent sideways. The driver first heads eastbound before turning around at McCain Road and heading westbound. A police vehicle is seen seconds later turning around and pursuing the truck.Gleason, a Lyft driver who was struck by the truck, told ABC 10News the suspect was determined to get out of the area quickly. She said she was in the middle of dropping off a passenger to the airport when she was struck. Thankfully, Good Samaritans gave the passenger a lift the rest of the way, she said.Gleason said police caught up with the driver and arrested the person. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - City leaders say the canyon near the 163 that caught fire Tuesday afternoon was overdue for tree trimming and a homeless flushing.The fire only burned 10 trees but it has many neighbors frustrated that the fire even started in the first place.“That was a pretty big one,” said Councilman Chris Ward on the fire, “we’re pretty scared here in the mid city neighborhoods with the urban canyons which catch fire from time to time.”Ward says he has been trying for over a year to get CalTrans and the City of San Diego to clear out the canyons.Officials have not announced the cause of the fire but it is believe to have been from a cooking fire started by homeless illegally camping.RELATED: Brush fire breaks out near 163“About a generation ago we lost 75 homes in Normal Heights to a canyon fire so this is a real, real danger.” said Ward, “We gotta take this seriously.” 896

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are investigating a fire that destroyed a car parked on the side of the freeway in Logan Heights early Monday morning.According to the California Highway Patrol, The incident happened at about 3 a.m. on the southbound lanes of Interstate 15 at Oceanview Blvd.When fire crews arrived, the car was fully engulfed. Firefighters were able to put the fire out quickly.When the smoke cleared, deputies found a rag in the gas tank and says it appeared the car had been set on fire intentionally.No injuries were reported.Arson investigators are looking into the cause of the fire. 613
