SAN DIEGO — The city of San Diego never waived permit repair fees for sidewalks, despite a January announcement from the mayor's office saying it would do so throughout 2020.A homeowner pays the fees, which total to just over ,000, when he or she elects to repair the sidewalk in front of their home. She wanted to spend upwards of ,500 to repair the crumbling sidewalk in front of her home. That sidewalk, laid down in 1922, is likely one of upwards of 81,000 backlogged locations the city has marked for repair."I actually am afraid now," St. George said. "People could trip. It's become sort of a hazard."The city has a program to split the construction cost with residents, as both the city and homeowners can be liable for the condition of the sidewalk. St. George, however, was willing to pay all of the cost because she wanted it done faster. However, when she called to get the permits, the city representative said she couldn't waive the fees. "I thought based on the mayor's announcement that it would be waived, so it was pretty shocking," she said. Councilman Mark Kersey, who heads the Active Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, which was moving the fee waiver program forward, said in a statement that he hopes this will be prioritized as money comes available. “Repairs on sidewalks are even more important in the pandemic since so many people depend on them every day," he said. "Programs like the fee waiver can keep residents moving safely and save valuable City dollars by preventing trip-and-fall lawsuits."The city says it also repaired or replaced more than 7,500 sidewalk locations last fiscal year. (AP) — Two federal judges have ordered the United States Postal Service to continue to implement "extraordinary measures" to make sure ballots are delivered on-time before the presidential election.A federal judge has ordered the U.S. Postal Service to take "extraordinary measures" to deliver ballots in time to be counted in Wisconsin and around Detroit, including using a priority mail service.Chief U.S. District Judge Stanley Bastian in Yakima, Washington, issued the order on Friday after being presented with data showing on-time delivery of ballots sent by voters were too slow in the battleground states of Michigan and Wisconsin.Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson's office says delivery of ballots in the USPS Detroit district, for example, has dipped as low as 57% over the past week. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 77-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured this afternoon by being struck by a car that was involved in a collision with another vehicle in La Jolla.The collision occurred at the intersection of La Jolla Boulevard and Nautilus Street, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.A 76-year-old man drove his Toyota Prius into the intersection during a red light and broadsided a Ford F150, which was driven by a 63-year-old man and had entered the intersection on a green light, Heims said.The Ford rotated and struck the pedestrian on the southwest corner of Nautilus Street and La Jolla Boulevard, according to Heims.The pedestrian sustained a Tibia/Fibula fracture in his left leg and other serious injuries, Heims said. The Toyota's driver sustained a minor cut on his face, and the Ford's driver was not injured.The San Diego Police Department's Traffic Division is investigating the crash, but drugs or alcohol is not suspected, according to Heims. 1008

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) — The California Medical Board is looking into a case where a San Diego doctor is accused of using dirty needles on pediatric patients. Newly released documents by the California Medical board states Dr. Bret Robert Gerber used dirty syringes on a 2-year-old and a 10-year-old in July 2016. At the time, Dr. Gerber worked at Scripps Coastal Medical Center in Hillcrest. The documents state a medical assistant reported seeing the doctor bring in two boxes of unauthorized needles from home. Upon closer review, she noticed that the syringes had expired in 2008, and the boxes contained dead insects and what looked to be rodent droppings. Three years before this alleged incident, Dr. Gerber was arrested by Mono County Sheriff's deputies for having psychedelic mushrooms, cocaine, and ecstasy. Deputies found the drugs inside his Winnebago during a traffic stop as the doctor was on his way to the Burning Man Festival. He later admitted to using ecstasy at the festival.Instead of court, Dr. Gerber went through a diversion program and the Medical Board put him on probation. However, in March 2018, documents showed Gerber violated his probation after failing to provide a bodily fluids sample for a drug test. Despite his prior offenses, Dr. Gerber’s medical license was never revoked. Dr. Gerber continues to practice pediatric medicine twice a week, most recently at Mid-City Community Clinic in City Heights. 10News contacted the California Medical Board for comment. Officials said Dr. Gerber now faces multiple charges including gross negligence, repeated negligent acts, failure to maintain accurate medical records, and unprofessional conduct. 1688
