SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A California Highway Patrol officer was taken to the hospital Thursday after a crash on SR-163 near Interstate 5 in Balboa Park.The officer was driving south on the highway approaching I-5 when he saw a pedestrian on the right shoulder.He slowed his patrol vehicle to make contact but was involved in a collision with another car.CHECK TRAFFICCHP officials said the veteran officer was disoriented and taken to Sharp Hospital as a precaution. There’s no word on the condition of the other driver.The CHP was not sure why the pedestrian was on the highway.Officers shut down one lane of south 163, backing up traffic in the area. 655

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The University of California Board of Regents announced Wednesday that it will ease admissions requirements for students applying to its nine campuses, including UC San Diego, during the coronavirus pandemic.The board voted Tuesday to suspend using SAT scores and letter grade requirements for A-G courses completed within the 2020 school year for all students who apply."We want to help alleviate the tremendous disruption and anxiety that is already overwhelming prospective students due to COVID-19," said John Perez, chair of the UC Board of Regents. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A European carrier is hoping to transform the way Southern California travels between major cities.FlixBus will start offering service to 10 Southern California cities, including in San Diego, beginning May 31. The service, which has operated within Europe since 2013, is hoping to carve out a presence with discounted ticket prices and some high-tech additions.For a limited time, travelers can snag fares from Los Angeles to Las Vegas for as low as on select dates throughout June, according to the service's website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A group of parents rallied in Mira Mesa Thursday morning to urge the San Diego Unified School District to reopen schools for in-person learning sooner rather than later.Since March, the district has kept school doors shut, but officials recently announced plans to initiate Phase 2 of a return plan come January.At Thursday’s rally, parents said that's not soon enough."Kids are depressed. We're trying to get them outside safe, but they need socialization and to be with friends. That's half of what they get out of school,” a parent said.City Councilmember Chris Cate joined parents Thursday in support, adding, "Every day that passes is critical."Cate said San Diego's climate could have easily played a part in welcome all students back to class by now."Outdoor learning, why are we not taking advantage of the climate we have here in San Diego?
