Based on the color, different activities are recommended.Red, or high COVID-19 rates, can celebrate in person with a small number of friends adhering to local safety orders, or keep it to house residents only with a costume-required dinner, scavenger hunt around the house to entertain the kids, some Halloween-themed karaoke, or a night of scary Netflix shows.In counties designed as orange, consider sitting outside in costume as friends, neighbors and family walk or drive by with candy. Or, get together with neighbors to create a neighborhood candy hunt, complete with a treasure map.As COVID-19 rates decrease, the ability to celebrate with others expands. Including curbside or garage trick-or-treating, face mask parties, or outdoor costume parties.Stay safe, even while celebrating, by taking simple precautions.Recommendations from the HIA and CDC include adults placing candy on a clean table and allowing kids to grab it themselves, remain six feet away from other people not in the same household, carry hand sanitizer and use frequently, then remember to wash hands thoroughly before enjoying any candy or treats. 1942

Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, two of the most important states in this year’s presidential election, are still waiting on a large number of ballots, and voters are running out of time to return them to election officials.As of Friday morning, election officials in Wisconsin were still awaiting 200,000 mail-in ballots, which must be received by Tuesday evening in order to be counted in this year’s presidential election.By comparison, the presidential race in election was decided by 23,000 votes in 2016.Earlier this week, the Supreme Court denied Democrats who asked for ballots that are postmarked on time but not received by Election Night to be counted. Election officials in Wisconsin say that mail delivery could take up to one week, so for those who have yet to return a ballot, they should do so at a county clerk’s office.“The absentee by mail deadlines in law don’t correspond with the amount of time it may take to receive and return your ballot by mail,” said Meagan Wolfe, administrator for the Wisconsin Elections Commission. “That is why the Wisconsin Elections Commission since the start of the pandemic earlier this year has been urging voters who wish to vote absentee by mail to request them as soon as possible.”In Pennsylvania, the state has mailed out 3 million ballots to voters, said Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar. Of the 3 million, some 27% were yet to be returned. Boockvar is recommending voters in Pennsylvania utilize drop boxes throughout the state in order to have their vote tabulated.The Pennsylvania Supreme Court extended the deadline for the state to receive ballots to November 6. Republicans appealed to the US Supreme Court, but the high court refused to overturn the state ruling.There are also questions about how long it will take in Pennsylvania to tabulate mail-in votes. Boockvar is urging counties to begin counting on the morning of Election Day, which is the earliest by law officials can begin counting."We are directly reaching out to the counties to explain why it matters to get started with pre-canvassing on Election Day, even if they can only do part of it," Boockvar said. "The overwhelming majority of counties are already planning to start pre-canvassing mail ballots the moment they can. I urge those few counties thinking about waiting until after the election to reconsider." 2349

WILMINGTON, Del. – During a year-end address, President-elect Joe Biden warned that country is far from emerging from the coronavirus crisis.“Our darkest days in this battle against COVID are ahead of us, not behind us. So, we need to prepare ourselves and steel our spines,” said Biden in Wilmington on Tuesday. “As frustrating as it is to hear, it’s going to take patience and persistence and determination to beat this virus. There will be no time to waste in taking the steps we need to turn this crisis around.”Watch Biden's speech below:During his speech, Biden spoke about the 0 billion COVID-19 relief bill that Congress approved Monday and is awaiting President Donald Trump’s signature. He said the bill is a good next step, but more funding will be needed in the coming year.“I have said all along, this bill is just a first step — a down payment — on addressing the crisis we’re in. We have a lot more work to do,” said Biden.Biden also took the chance to express sympathy for the many American families who are struggling financially and emotionally as they celebrate the holidays in isolation amid the global pandemic.“With over 320,000 lives lost to this virus, Jill and I send our prayers to all of you facing this dark winter with an empty seat at the dinner table where your loved one used to sit, talk, and laugh,” said Biden. “Our hearts go out to all of you who have fallen on hard times through no fault of your own, unable to sleep at night, weighed down with the worry of what tomorrow will bring for you and for your family.”Like for Thanksgiving, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is encouraging people to celebrate the end of year holidays at home with the people you live with. Gatherings with family and friends who do not live with you can increase the chances of getting or spreading COVID-19 or the flu.“Like we did over Thanksgiving, we all have to care enough for each other that we have to stay apart just a little longer,” said Biden. “I know it’s hard, but we have a long way to go.”Biden also encouraged Americans to continue taking the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus as the nation ramps up its vaccination efforts.“We need everyone to mask up, stay socially distant, and avoid large gatherings,” said Biden. “And we need to work in a bipartisan way. That’s the only way we’ll get through this.”Biden himself received his initial dose of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine on Monday, shortly after his wife did as well. He joined a growing list of officials who have publicly been vaccinated to show confidence in the vaccination process.During his remarks, Biden said he has “absolute confidence in the vaccine,” but the country is short on supply. He explained that vaccinating millions of people will be a logistical challenge.“Taking the vaccine from a vial and into the arms of millions of Americans will be the biggest operational challenge we’ve ever faced. It will take many more months for that to happen,” said Biden. “In the meantime, the pandemic rages on.”Early next year, Biden said he will put his plans for what’s to come before the Congress. He said we will need more help to fully distribute the vaccine, to reopen our schools, to help our front-line workers, and to make sure those struggling to make ends meet are taken care of.On his day in office, Biden says he will enact masking requirements, a new strategy on testing, and work on accelerated production of protective gear.Biden also discussed the recent cyber security breach against U.S. companies and federal agencies. He blamed the Trump administration for failing to prioritize cyber security“From eliminating and/or downgrading cyber coordinators at both the White House and the State Department, to firing his Director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, to President Trump’s irrational downplaying of the seriousness of this attack,” said Biden. “In an age when so much of our lives are conducted online, cyber attacks must be treated as a serious threat by our leadership at the highest levels.”Biden said he believes we must treat cyber threats with the same seriousness of purpose that we treated the threat of other unconventional weapons.“We must work with our allies to establish clear international rules and mechanisms to enforce them and consequences for those that violate them,” said Biden.After his remarks, Biden took questions.When asked about the potential for more direct payments, Biden said his plan will include a new round of stimulus checks for the American people, but the amount is a “negotiating issue.”Regarding his choice for attorney general, he said he’s still trying to determine who will serve in that role and that “there’s not an obvious choice in mind.”When asked if he would announce his 2024 bid early to show he's not going to be a lame duck president, Biden said, "I'm not going to be a lame duck. When will companies learn the golden rule: Think before you tweet.Keurig and other brands caught flack from all sides for how they responded to social media calls to distance themselves from Fox News host Sean Hannity. Companies walked back statements they made on Twitter or struggled to explain their actual relationships to Hannity -- in each case stoking the social media fires.Critics targeted companies that advertised on Hannity's syndicated radio show as well as his Fox News program after Hannity appeared to defend Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore on Thursday. Moore has been accused of sexual misconduct with teenagers, including a 14-year-old girl. He has denied the allegations.The firestorm began in earnest on Friday. Angelo Carusone, president of liberal watchdog group Media Matters for America, appealed directly to brands like Keurig to cut advertising ties with Hannity."Good afternoon @Keurig. You are currently sponsoring Sean Hannity's show ... please reconsider," Carusone wrote on Twitter.Keurig responded the next morning. The company said on Twitter: "We worked with our media partner and FOX news to stop our ad from airing during the Sean Hannity Show."Keurig's response was praised by Hannity's critics. But it sparked a backlash from Hannity's supporters, who started a #BoycottKeurig hashtag and, in some cases, even smashed their own Keurig machines.By Monday, Keurig CEO Bob Gamgort had apologized for how Keurig responded."The decision to publicly communicate our programming decision via our Twitter account was highly unusual," Gamgort wrote an internal memo to employees. "This gave the appearance of 'taking sides' in an emotionally charged debate that escalated on Twitter and beyond over the weekend, which was not our intent."Keurig wasn't the only company to walk back its initial response to the Hannity controversy.Realtor.com tweeted on Saturday "we are not currently, and will not be running TV ads on Hannity." But it later deleted the tweet, and on Sunday it posted a statement to its corporate blog with a very different message: "We will continue to place ads across a broad range of networks, including Fox News and its top shows."Reddi-wip, which is owned by ConAgra, tweeted on Monday "our objective has always been to reach fans in ways that align with our values. Therefore, we are removing our ads from the show," in response to a user who asked the brand not to support Hannity. Later, the company said "we removed Hannity from our advertising plans," adding on Tuesday, "this program has not been included in our media plan for a long time."A ConAgra representative confirmed on Tuesday that the company has not advertised with the program for months, but added that the controversy hasn't impacted ConAgra's future plans.Irv Schenkler, Director of the Management Communication Program at New York University's Stern School of Business, said that companies need to take a balanced approach when developing their social media strategies. On one hand, firms should be engaging with their customers online. On the other, they should be wary of jumping into a controversy too quickly, he advised.Sometimes when companies tweet "they are acting from the seat of the pants, as opposed to taking a moment to analyze and examine the dimensions of the event or issue," Schenkler explained.By responding too quickly on social media, companies may end up exacerbating controversies that may fizzle out on their own, he said.Brayden King, a professor of Management and Organizations at Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management, said Twitter can be an easy way for brands to get messages to a large audience. "Twitter reaches a lot of people very quickly," he said, while "a press release can be ignored by the very people you want to see it."But companies do face a risk when they use social media platforms to disseminate a position. "If you don't think through the media strategy carefully, you can expose yourself to criticism from other people -- including people you see as potential customers," King said.Schenkler added that brands may sometimes forget how public their Twitter interactions are."What [brands] might consider to be business conversations are just out there, and people forget that," he said. "And they pay the price sometimes."To protect themselves, Schenkler said, companies may want to enact a social media process or protocol that prioritizes the brand's ultimate objectives -- and keep it in mind when responding to a controversy.  4534
