WELLINGTON, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- A New Zealand study has found that people who work at least 50 hours a week can be up to three times more at risk of alcohol problems than people who work fewer hours.The study, conducted by the University of Otago, used data that followed more than 1,000 people born in Christchurch in 1977 through to age 30.Study leader Dr Sheree Gibb said it aimed to examine whether working hours were related to alcohol problems in early adulthood.Data from more than 1,000 participants at ages 25 and 30 showed a significant association between longer working hours and alcohol- related problems.Longer working hours were associated with higher levels of alcohol problems including frequent alcohol use and alcohol abuse or dependence.People who worked 50 hours or more on average a week were 1.8 to 3.3 times more likely to have alcohol-related problems than those who were not working, and about 1.2 to 1.5 times more likely to have alcohol-related problems than those who worked 30 to 49 hours a week.The higher risk of alcohol abuse for those who worked longer hours was evident in both men and women, according to the study.Gibb said the finding could suggest a need for consideration of policies and programs targeting individuals who worked long hours, with the aim of reducing rates of alcohol-related problems.The article had been accepted for publication by the UK-based journal Addiction.

BERLIN, July 26 (Xinhua) -- German national disease control center said on Tuesday that the country's deadly E. coli outbreak has been over, as no new case reported in the last three weeks.The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) said the last case related to the E.coli outbreak was reported on July 4.As a three-week-period would cover the disease's incubation time, diagnosis time and the time for the transfer of a case, this virtually means an end of the outbreak."The largest EHEC outbreak is over in Germany," said RKI President Reinhard Burger. "I pay tribute to people who have joined in the great work, making investigation and looking after the patients."The RKI said Germany would keep watching the deadly EHEC O104: H4 intensively and asked people to pay attention to personal and food hygiene, as individual infection still cannot be ruled out.This round of outbreak has claimed 52 lives and affected more than 4,000 people since early May.The source of this disease was first believed to be cucumbers and tomatoes from Spain, and then was locked onto bean sprouts grown in a farm near Hamburg in the state Lower Saxony. BEIJING, June 26 (Xinhua) -- China on Sunday issued a regulation on drug rehabilitation that encourages drug users to voluntarily undergo rehabilitation programs.The regulation took effect Sunday as a supplement of the country's anti-drug law that was implemented three years ago.Drug users who voluntarily receive intervention programs "will be exempt from punishment," said the regulation, promulgated on the 24th International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which falls on Sunday.With seven chapters and 46 articles, it also stipulates the rights and obligations of drug addicts, as well as supporting measures for voluntary, community-based, and government-ordered drug rehabilitation.Up to date, more than two million Chinese have been receiving compulsive rehabilitation or treatment, statistics show. However, many of them find it difficult to completely give up the addiction.The regulation, aiming to explore effective ways to curb drug use, calls for boosting "the role of communities and families" in helping reduce drug users' dependency on narcotics.It asks rehabilitation centers to provide addicts with consulting services and education on the prevention of HIV/AIDS and other contagious diseases.Efforts should be made to "boost pharmaceutical management" so as to prevent loss or abuse of psychotropic substances and narcotics, the regulation says.The regulation also stipulates on the protection of drug addicts' personal information, saying "members of the police, judiciary and health departments who cause the leak of personal information must be punished."The regulation has solicited public comments before it was released.Transnational drug trafficking remains rampant in China, particularly in southwestern border regions of Yunnan and Guangxi.A report issued last month by China's National Narcotics Control Commission said authorities investigated 89,000 drug-related crimes and arrested 101,000 suspects last year.Law enforcers confiscated 5.3 metric tonnes of heroin and one metric tonne of opium in 2010, the report said, adding that intervention programs were used to treat and rehabilitate some 175,000 drug addicts last year.

UNITED NATIONS, June 9 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday called for governments, organizations and individuals to take active actions, enhance solidarity and establish joint prevention and treatment mechanism to deal with AIDS.Yin Li, vice Health minister of China made the remarks as he addressed the United Nations High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS held here."As a responsible developing country, the Chinese government has actively fulfilled its commitments in achieving universal access to AIDS prevention and treatment, eliminating social discrimination, and ensuring rights to prevention, treatment and care of people living with HIV/AIDS and their families," he said.Thanks to the efforts over the years, the spread of AIDS epidemic in China has slowed down, the morality rate considerably decreased and life quality of people with HIV/AIDS has significantly improved, Yin added.In order to achieve the goal of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths defined by the joint UN Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), China called for all countries, organizations and persons to be mobilized, further enhance solidarity and clearly define responsibilities and establish a joint prevention and treatment mechanism.Yin said that in the face of the common challenge of HIV/AIDS, the developed and developing countries must assume shared responsibilities."The developed countries should further provide developing countries with generous, unconditional financial and technical support.
